Redmen Hockey Earns Title Appearance With Win Over Marblehead

Tewksbury jumped to a 3-1 lead and withstood a late surge to hang on for a 3-2 win in the North Division 2 semifinal.

Different sport. Same result.

Tewksbury and Marblehead squared off on Monday night in the North Division 2 semifinal round of the boys hockey postseason, just as they went head-to-head last fall in the Division 3 Northeast championship football game.

And in both cases, it was the Redmen who walked away with the win.

Tewksbury scored once in each period and withstood a late Marblehead rally on Monday night at Chelmsford Forum. The Redmen snagged a 3-2 victory and as a result will play next Monday night at 6 p.m. in the North Division 2 title game against top-seeded Beverly.

Jack Cash opened the scoring for Tewksbury when he found the back of the net with 1:50 remaining in the opening frame. But Marblehead bounced right back when Tim Kalinowski scored with 1.6 remaining in the frame to knot the score at 1-1.

Ryan Petti scored the only goal of the game for the Redemn at the 7:13 mark of the middle frame, and Colin Quinn tapped one home five minutes into the final period to push the edge to 3-1.

Marblehead scored with 1:14 to play in the game to pull within a goal, but Tewksbury would allow their opponents to clear the defensive zone and pull the goalie until just 10 seconds remained in the contest, and by then it was too late.

The Redmen will take the ice of Lowell's Tsongas Center on Monday, looking for a berth in the state championship game.
