Redmen Roundup: Boys, Girls Hoops Teams Play For Tournament Titles

Boys Basketball

Tewksbury 58, Littleton 55

The Tewksbury High boys basketball team will renew their Route 38 border war with Wilmington High tonight in the finals of the Sons of Italy Holiday Tournament.

The Redmen continued their excellent early-season play, holding off previously unbeaten Littleton High, 58-55.

It looked like it would be a rout early on, as Tewksbury roared to a 35-17 lead at halftime. But Littleton clawed their way back into the game and was within striking distance in the fourth quarter. In the final minutes, some clutch free throws by Kevin Dick iced the win for the Redmen (4-2).

Tewksbury freshman Nate Tenaglia led all scorers with 19 points, including 13 in the first half. Dick finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Wilmington, which beat Shawsheen Tech in the other semifinal, will take on Tewksbury for the championship at 7 p.m. in the Wilmington High Gym.

Indoor Track

Holiday Qualifier

Three Redmen placed well at the MSTCA Holiday Qualifier at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

Cory Cataldo led the way with a 7th place finish in the 300 (38.10). The Tewksbury High 4x200 team also took 7th (1:38.88).

Junior Eddie Matovu placed 8th in the 55-meter hurdles (8.44).

Girls Basketball

Tewksbury 39, Melrose 32

The Tewksbury High girls basketball team picked an outstanding time to nail down its first win of the season. The Redmen stopped Melrose, 39-32, in the semifinal of the Melrose Christmas Tournament.

Tewksbury (1-3) will meet Falmouth High in the title game tonight at 7 p.m.

Junior Sara Semenza paced the Redmen with nine points. Nicole Chaet and Shannon Semenza chipped in with seven points each.

JV Boys Hockey

Methuen 3, Tewksbury 2

The Tewksbury High JV hockey team dropped its first game of the season, falling to Methuen, 3-2.

The Redmen dropped to 3-1-0 on the season.

Methuen raced out to a 3-0 lead and seemed to be cruising before Tewksbury mounted a furious comeback. Freshmen Domenic Raneri and Connor Blair scored goals to cut the Methuen lead to a single goal, but the Redmen could never net the equalizer.

The JV Redmen will be at home against Chelmsford and on the road against North Andover and Westford over the next four days.
