Tewksbury Cheerleading To Host Invitational Competition

The competition will be held at Tewksbury Memorial High School on Oct. 13.

Tewksbury Cheerleading will host an invitational competition at Tewksbury Memorial High School on Sunday, Oct. 13 in which more than 20 teams from the area will participate.

The Tewksbury middle school, junior varsity and varsity cheerleading teams will participate in the event, according to organizer Kelly Wentworth.

The competition will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and the cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the Tewksbury Cheering program, specifically toward the purchase of new cheering mats.

According to Wentworth, the program only has one set of mats currently, and has to transport them between schools depending on where the team is practicing on a given day.

"They are pretty old and are usually driven from school to school depending on where they are practicing," Wentworth said.

The current mats are just rolled up pieces of gymnastics flooring that are more than eight years old, according to Wentworth.

There will also be concessions, a raffle and vendors at the competition.

Redmen football players and cheering alumni will also be volunteering at the competition, which will be incorporated as part of homecoming weekend.

"I like the idea of it being on homecoming weekend so everyone can pitch into another great community event," Wentworth said.
