Tewksbury Girls 7B Trims Reading, Swamps Wilmington

Girls 7B

Tewksbury     27, Reading 22

The 7B girls travel team travelled to Reading on Saturday and to say that they started out slow was an understatement.  They didn’t get on the score board for over 6 minutes but this didn’t deter them as they tied the game at the end of the first half.  At the buzzer, a Reading player was fouled and sank 1 of her free throws to give the Rockets a slim1 point lead at 12-11.  Scoring for the Redmen were Kiera Nash, Lizzie Markwarth, and Sam Surowiec with 2 points a piece, Maddy Wescott with 4 points, and Erika Whynot with a season high 17 points.  In the second half the Redmen came out with a tenacious full court defense and kept their turnovers to a minimum which made for a good recipe for a win.  This game turned into a hard fought contest with the lead changing hands many times.  Andrea Defina, Sam Alman, and Nicole Cobuccio worked hard on defense and kept the Redmen in the game.  With just 2 minutes left the Redmen found themselves down by 1 and they needed a big play to change the momentum. Leave it to the Redmen defense to force a turnover and take control of the game.  Surowiec stole the inbound pass and made a great pass to Whynot who made a tough layup to give Tewksbury the lead.  Another Surowiec steal landed in the hands of Whynot who once again made a pressure layup.  The combination of Markwarth, Surowiec, Whynot, Wescott, and McGaffigan t was relentless and the Rocket’s didn’t score another basket and the Redmen came out with a great win against a good team.

Tewksbury 32, Wilmington 12

On Sunday the 7B travel team made the short trip south to Wilmington where the Wildcats were hungry for their first win but Tewksbury wasted no time in getting on the board and scored 18 first half points.  McGaffigan, Surowiec (2 pts), and Whynot (7 pts) took good care of the ball and distributed it evenly for a well balanced offense.  Sam Alman dropped in 8 strong points, Nash added 2 points, Markwarth added 4 points, and Wescott rounded out the scoring with 9 points. Sarah Larsen had some open looks but her shots wouldn’t fall.  Shannon Vasas and Andrea Defina owned the boards which made it easy for the guards in transition.  McGaffigan and Cobuccio played great team defense and each came up with a blocked shot while Wescott and Alman played great defense down low.  Wescott continues to be a force in the middle of the Redmen zone.  Markwarth and Surowiec quietly played their best games of the season.  They did this from the floor; diving for loose balls, on the boards; grabbing offensive rebounds, and with aggressive defense and patience on offense.  The Redmen cruised to their most decisive win of the season and had a very successful weekend.
