Tewksbury Girls Claim MVC D2 Track Championship

If you're going to win a league championship, do it in style.

girls track team ran through, around and over Lawrence High on their way to a 103.5-27.5 victory. With the win, the Redmen clinched the MVC Division 2 Championship with a perfect 5-0 league mark.

Erin Morrissey and Jess Amadee led the way for Tewksbury with two wins each. Morrissey won the 100 meters (13.3) and the long jump (14-9.5). Amadee won the high hurdles (16.9) and the high jump (4-6).

"Jess Amedee's progressing in the 100 hurdles faster than anyone I can recall," siad Coach John Byrne. "I'd almost go as far to say that if the season was six weeks longer, she'd be one of the favorites to win the MVC title.  Ashley Callahan looked good in the hurdles as well- hitting her first outdoor state qualifier."

Morrisey also anchored the winning 4x100 meter relay team.

"Morrissey's been one of our leading scorers this year, and she had a huge day winning the LJ, 100, and 4x100," added Byrne. "In fact, after her relay leg, the Lawrence boy's coach came up to Coach Navetta and me and asked who the heck that was on anchor.  So people are starting to notice Erin."

Tewksbury also got outstanding contributions from Kelly Quigley (1st in triple jump, 2nd in high hurdles) and Matildo Matovu (1st place shot put, 3rd place discus).

Other winners included Courtney Spinelli in the javelin and Arianna Smith in the 200 meters.

"Arianna Smith wasn't particularly thrilled with her indoor season this year, but she's really been bringing it these last couple of weeks," said Byrne. "She won the 200 in blowout fashion out today."

"We had so many young athletes contribute to today's win as well, and some of them were excited about scoring in a varsity meet that they were begging to run extra events at the end of the meet, which is always good to see," added Byrne. "Carina Berglund (1st- 2 mile), Olivia Boudreau (2nd- 2 mile), Ally Giles (3rd- 2 mile), Meaghan Blaisdell (2nd- 100; 3rd- 200), Kelsie Bradley (2nd- LJ, 3rd- 100; 1st- 4x100), Rachael McCabe (1st- mile), Grace Canavan (2nd- mile), Andrea Lozowski (3rd- mile), Jen Schultz (1st- 400), Marissa Maciel (1st- 400h), Pamela Sarraf (2nd- 400h), Colleen Kelly (3rd- 400h), Caitlyn Leary (2nd- 800), and Karah Chiasson (3rd- 800) are all freshman and sophomore athletes who i think will help to form the nucleus of next year's team.  Good attitudes on those young kids, and that's encouraging."

"Lastly, our staff is really happy for the seniors," said Byrne. "They were able to win the small school division all four years, and more than anything else I think it's a testament to the way train during the season, between the seasons, and during the summers.  They've been great to work with."

Boys Track Team Tops Lawrence, 84.66-51.33

The Tewksbury High boys track team put together one of their strongest all-around performances of the season in an 84.66-51.33 win over Lawrence High on Tuesday.

"It was a team wide effort today! The kids came in wanting to win so badly and it showed," said Coach Bill Meuse. "The times may not have been the best but they did everything they had to do to win."

Cory Cataldo led the way for the Redmen with wins in the long jump (19'-8.5"), triple jump (39'-4.25") and 400 hurdles (61.8).

"Cory Cataldo kind of stole the show today by getting three firsts . He recorded season best in both jumping events," said Meuse. "Cory is really hitting his stride as far as jumping goes and he continues to get better in the hurdles."

Tewksbury also got a sweep in the two-mile from Brendan Blair, Kip Horahan and Cory Thomas. Tim Conklin scored a win in the mile and Brian Amaral took second in the 800.

"The Distance crew also came up big and outscored Lawrence 22-5 in the 2 mile, 1 mile and the 800," said Meuse. "I cant say enough about Horahan, Amaral and Thomas; not only are they very good but they also help out their teammates during races like I have never seen before. They are very unselfish and their teammates definitely feed off that and support one another."

Girls coach John Byrne offered his congratulations to the boys team on their victory.

"They've lost a bunch of incredibly close meets, but they're a very good team that's really been putting in the effort," said Byrne. "I've only been watching from afar, but the togetherness and the work ethic has been superb. So congrats to Coach Meuse and the rest of the boys on a well deserved victory over a very talented Lawrence team."
