Wizards 22 – Warriors 16

Find out what's happening in Tewksburywith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The Warriors came out strong scoring a quick basket off the tipoff and jumping out to an early lead but the Wizards defense led by Nathan Norwood, Will Forbes and Colin Goggins came together and slowed down the Warriors high scoring offense. This was a team win for the Wizards with all 11 players contributing on Defense leading to fast break opportunities. Logan Teixiera had his best offensive game of the season scoring 14 points. Colin Fullerton was a force under the basket with multiple blocked shots and rebounds. Ethan Exilhomme and David Miller rounded out the scoring with 4 points each. Jonny Norwood, Connor McFadyn, Felix Navarette and Jason Donaher also contributed defensively for the Wizards.

The Warriors started off fast with Bryan Doherty winning the opening tip right to Luke McFadyen who drove for a layup putting the Warriors ahead 3 seconds into the game.  Things were still looking good as Julian Costello hit a short jumper on a great pass from Will McFadyen to tie the game at the end of the first quarter.  Sean Kaiser scored on a layup early in the second quarter.  Travis Cohen battled hard on the boards capturing 5 rebounds but the Wizards were too much underneath and the Warriors fell behind at the half.  Luke McFadyen scored 5 of his 7 points in the third quarter including a layup on a great inbounds pass from Dylan Crowley to keep the game close.  Ryan Melo and Sreetej Digmurthi each contributed a steal and tough defense as the Warriors mounted a late comeback attempt.  Will McFadyen and Bryan Doherty scored baskets in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.

Cavs 29 – Celtics 27

The Cavs played a complete team game for a 29-27 victory.  John Cucinotta saved the game by grabbing a loose ball at the end of the game to seal the victory.  Cucinotta also had help on defense from Tyler Leeds, Justin Charlton, Jason Barnes, and Dhruv Kaushal.  They made key rebounds and steals that led to the Cavs scoring contributions from Joey Arsenault (7pts), Logan Frost (6pts), Shayne Macdonald (8pts), Mike Bottaro (7pts), and Dhruv Kaushal  (1pt).

Lakers 21 – Mavs 15

The Lakers started fast and kept it going all game with Nick Polimeno (4 pts) getting the scoring started, with the help of some good passing and rebounding from Nick Wilson and Abhi Lingareddy. Lee Ghannam’s tremendous effort all year paid off today with his first four points of the season. The Lakers would then turn up the defense with great steals from Mike Wilson and open court hustle from Mihir Bagul to keep the Mavs outside from scoring. Sean Fahey (9 pts) would continue to force the Lakers lead on the Mavs.  The Mavs would step up to the challenge and fight their way back in the second half but it was not enough to overcome a strong Laker effort.

Scoring for the Mavs was led by Mark Olu with 8pts, Nick Johnston 4pts, and Henry Pestana with 3 pts. Both Alex Johnston and Cullain Johnson ripped down many rebounds while Josh Engelken and Paul Tower played tough defense down low.  Derek Wilkinson and Devon Stoddard played great at guard and just couldn't get the shots to fall while Jordan Mackenzie put in a solid all-around effort.

Intermediate Division

Suns 29 – Thunder 25

The Suns Defense dominated the outcome of the game led by Ryan Bennett, Chris Zdniak, Jack O'Neill, and Harrison Graczyk with steals, pressure and rebounds. With a balanced attack on offense, the Suns scored 33 points led by Phadungdet Kaeokit with 14 points; William Mance with 7, which included a 3 point basket; Matthew Dugan with 6; Sean Whelton with 5, which included a 3 point basket; and Anthony Miano, who scored a basket from the foul line.

The Thunder took on the Suns in an exciting game this week. A six-player Thunder squad hustled their way to a small lead in the third quarter, but the Suns size, skill and effort overcame the resilient Thunder in the end. All six Thunder players- John Nowell, Ryan Joyce, Rich Kramer, Patrick Dunn, Derek Leffler and Robert Chisholm contributed to the scoring and played a great overall team game with their ball-handling, passing, and rebounding and defense. The Thunder's scoring featured three-pointers by John Nowell, Ryan Joyce and Derek Leffler, showing how far the players have come since the beginning of the season!

Jazz 50 – Bucks 44

The Jazz held on to beat a hard working Bucks team Saturday morning. Scoring for the Jazz was Ryan Meuse with 11 points, Nate Wilkinson & Derek Wallace each with 7 points, Josh Donaher with 6 points, and Nick Stephens had 2 points to go along with his 16 rebounds. Shawn Manson and Matt Ferreira each had one basket and rounding out the scoring for the Jazz, hitting a big shot late was Mike Bankowski with 2 points. Once again, another strong defensive game from Matt Pelletier and Jack Kenneally.

The Bucks ran into a tough Jazz team and just couldn’t match them offensively.  On the offensive end of the floor the Bucks were led by Jake Dillon with 7 and Jason Richardson with 6. Also hitting the score sheet was Cam Grace with 4 and Kyle Braciska, Riley Auth, Michael Kelleher, Josh Winter all with 2 points each. On the defensive end of the floor Jake Winter, Pat Killion and Pat Rosemond all played tough to try and keep it close but in the end we just had no answers for the co-league leading Jazz.

Wizards 47 – Heat 46

The Wizards started out slow on offense in the first quarter only scoring 3 points, all by Xavier McShane and were trailing by the score of 10-3. In the second quarter both teams played evenly and with a last second 3 pointer by the Heat they increased their lead to 11 points with the score at half time Heat 24-Wizards 11. After half time the Wizards held strong on defense with the efforts from Rich Cappiello, Owen Gilligan, Xavier McShane and John Murphy holding the Heat to 6 points. On the offensive side of the ball the Wizards cut into the 11 point lead of the Heat with scoring contributions from Dominic Cohen, Matt Perron and Nick Cappiello to 5 points with the score at the end of the third quarter Heat 30, Wizards 25. In the fourth quarter the teams again played equally strong on offense but the Wizards were able to eventually tie the game at 44 apiece with scoring from Alec Sokol and Sean McMahon and held strong on defense for the Heats last possession in regulation forcing the game into overtime. In overtime the Wizards were able to score 3 points and hold the Heat to 2 points winning the game in overtime by the final score of Wizards 47- Heat 46. The Wizards never gave up and played strong the entire game.

Bobcats 39 – Celtics 35

Senior Division

T-wolves 64 – Magic 59

T-wolves beat the Magic 64-59 in overtime. T-wolves fought for every point they scored. The players tried to keep the game close but we were down by 15 points before the half.  Mikey Lambert got 3 great 3-point shots. Andrew Pacheco showed great ball handling skills and defensive maneuvers while scoring 5 points. Mikey Sarno scored 2 points and Trevor Breen scored 3 points while assisting offensively and defensively in many others. Bradley Richardson was quick to grab rebounds and steals.  Joshua Tirrell demonstrated his firm skills scoring an all-time team high score of 37 points in a game this season! Adam Deveau swiftly ran up and the down court sinking 5 baskets for 10 points.  Chris Chiccarelli 1 pt., Tim Patterson and Brad Denis assisted in defense and several baskets. Good teamwork and a great game played by these boys.  I am very proud of your hard work and consistent effort.

Sixers 32 – Blazers 50

In a game that was a lot closer than the score indicates, a short-handed Sixers squad played well for three quarters but couldn't keep up with the Blazers' fast-paced offense and domination underneath.  Elijah McTiernan played his best game all year, leading the Sixers with 13 points and numerous steals.  Bryan Lelos and Nick Zullo played their usual solid game, scoring 8 and 7, respectively, and fighting for rebounds against a much taller Blazers team.  Jonathan Zurawski played a great game too, scoring 4, setting nice picks, and picking Blazers' pockets from behind several times.  Nick Catizone played well underneath, fighting through a turned ankle to play out the game.  Pat Carleton played solid D against much taller players, as did Raymond Humphrey.  Jonathan Raschella handled the ball well, and made a few nice drives and shots, but couldn't get one to fall.

Hornets 65 – Bobcats 43

The Hornets’ entire team was on fire, with 4 three point shots dropping from outside the arc, and four players reaching double digits in scoring. The team’s defense was exceptional stopping the Bobcats as they tried to make a run. Leading the way on defense was Daniel DeRosa who created multiple turnovers setting up his line mates for additional baskets with hard pinpoint passing. Guard Matty McLaughlin’s dribbling skills allowed him to get around the Bobcat’s players and put up 15 points, which included one of the team’s 3 point shots. Center Ben Connors used his power and size inside and dominated on the boards to drop in 13 points. Crisp outside shooting by both Robert Page (10 points), and Nolan Higgins (10 points) put distance between the Hornets and Bobcats. Higgins buried two long range three points in the first half, and couldn’t miss. Following in the scoring were Leo Frisella who powered in 8 points around the Bobcat’s defense, and Brendan Murray who had the team’s fourth 3 pointer, and 5 points in total. Rounding out the team’s total was Sam Fortier (2 points) who sank two clutch free throws at the end of the first half, and Nick Borges (2 points) who buried a nice long range outside shot.

The Bobcats ran into an offense buzz saw on Saturday when they took the floor with the Hornets. Josh Snyder and Jarryd Hicky helped to control the paint by blocking shots and grabbing countless rebounds to get some fast breaks started. John Kenney and Ryan Nickerson did their best to keep the Bobcats close by throwing in a couple of nice long range three pointers, hitting nothing but net. Defensively Nick Heinze was all over the court going after every loose ball he could see. Danny Carter really stepped up as well on the defensive end by causing some late turnovers. The fourth quarter saw tremendous ball pressure from the Bobcats as they tried to fight back into the game. Dave Pesantes and Mike Flynn wreaked havoc on opposing guards causing a few turnovers, which led to a few easy baskets for Damian Dugan who paced the Bobcats with 29 points. In the end the Hornets hit a lot of timely and big shots, and the Bobcats comeback attempt fell short.

Rockets 45 – Bucks 44

Travel Program

Tewksbury 6th grade Red split its two road games this past week, falling to Lowell's A team 61-39 and then beating Westford 53-21. In a rare Tuesday night affair, 6 Red travelled to Lowell to take on a very strong Lowell team in a non-division battle. Lowell is dominating the MVL A division but 6 Red accepted the challenge and played inspired basketball for the first 16 minutes going to the half trailing 25-22. Unfortunately, 6 Red could not maintain the intensity and Lowell's athleticism proved to be the difference in the second half. Richie Markwarth did some nice work inside finishing with 12 points followed by Chris Antonelli (7 pts), Colby Brown (6 pts.), Tyler Keough (5 pts.), Shane Aylward (4 pts.), Garrett Kingston (3 pts.) and Thomas Bradley (2 pts.).

On Saturday, 6 Red went out to Westford for an early morning game. But apparently not too early for 6 Red as they were wide awake and ready to go and jumped all over the opposition. Brown (11 pts.) and Markwarth (8 pts.) led the offensive charge. After that, 6's were wild as Nicky Iannacci, Paul Manzi, Nolan Timmons, Keough and Antonelli accounted for 6 points each. Kingston (3 pts.) and Aylward (1 pt.) rounded out the scoring. Although Greg Sencabaugh did not score any points, he was arguably the offensive star with several eye-popping assists leading to easy scores for his teammates.

6 Red currently stands at an impressive 10-3 record in the division which is good enough for second place with 4 weeks left in the season.

The Tewksbury 6th Grade White basketball team moved to 11-3 on the season with wins over Reading and Stoneham in Merrimack Valley action. The Redmen defeated Reading 44-37 early in the week and faced Stoneham on the weekend. In the Stoneham Game, Tewksbury jumped out in front 17-5 as Thomas Barinelli (6 pts) and Sean Phaneuf (6 pts) made several steals and converted the turnovers into lay-ups. The Redmen continued their strong defense, intercepting multiple passes with Rob Evangelista (6 pts), Max Cummings (9 pts) and Santino Garofalo (9 pts) controlling the boards, Tewksbury leading 36-10 at the half. Jason Martineau (2 pts) and Joey Branchaud (7 pts) continued the torrid scoring pace with lay-ups to start the second half as the Redmen extended the lead 48-14. The Redmen created scoring opportunities until the end of the game with great passing led by Colby Ward (6 pts), jump shots by Anthony Disanto (8 pts) and quick drives to the basket by Aiden Doherty (8 pts), final score 67-32. 6th Grade White returns to action Saturday, 7:30 pm, 2/8 vs. first place Windham at Tewksbury Memorial High.

Tewksbury 7th Grade White Team wins 5th in a row

Tewksbury 7th grade white team beat Billerica who was at near the top of our division with a great victory. Billerica jumped out to a 21-3 lead early. They pressed us early and caught us off guard. We started chipping away at the lead and cut the lead to 9 before the half. We made some adjustments on the press in the second half and took the lead with 3 minutes left in the game. We held on to the lead and pulled off the victory winning 56-52. We made 6 three pointers in the second half that opened up the inside game to get the job done. Riley Frost had the hot hand with 3 three pointers and 11 points. Kyle Rossetti added 9 points with a three and some clutch free throws at the end. Joe Schifano added 7 inside points. Zach Tyler hit 2 three pointers added 6. Dalton Bere and Jared Rizzo added 6 points each. Brennan Rogers added a three pointer and had 7 points. Travis MacMurdo added 4 points.  Kevin Carroll , Chad Boshetti and Nick Larsen hit the boards and good defense got them back in the game. This was a huge victory for us because it puts us right near the top.

On Sunday we played Chelmsford and broke out to an early lead. Chelmsford didn’t give up but we had a huge lead in the first half and held them off to a 50-32 win. Everyone played well and no one was in double digits scored because of good team basketball. This puts us at 10-3 for the season and gives us a good chance for the west title.
