TBBL In-town Games Tipped Off on November 9th

TBBL basketball is back! Nearly 500 Tewksbury boys headed back to the courts this past Saturday for the beginning if the 2013-2014 TBBL In-town Season.

CADET DIVISION

Rockets 20  -  Suns 18

In the opening game of the TBBL Cadet Season the Rockets pulled off an exciting two point victory. The Rockets were led offensively by Adam Ellegood who scored a team high 8 points. Shane Exilhomme and Brandon Waddell rounded out the scoring with 6 points each. Timmy Panilaitis and Daniel Sullivan handled the ball very well helping to guide the offense as did Shane Exilhomme. Playing outstanding defense were Jayden Trudeau, Jimmy Holmes, and Liam Kelley. Shane Exilhomme and Brandon Waddell all did a terrific job rebounding at both ends of the floor. Seamus Naughton and Colin Buchanan did a real nice job passing and working on defense!   

The Suns battled well throughout the game.  Ryan Mackeen received the Suns Game Ball for his clutch shot and strong defense. Noah Rizzo led the Suns scoring with 5 baskets, followed by several key baskets from Ben Piccolo and Anthony Burgess. Robbie Beggan & Nicholas Gonzalez had many crisp steals and defensive plays, along with Jonah Bennett who brought an impressive intensity to the Center position. Alex Dellorusso pulled down 2 game changing rebounds.  Lastly, Jake Ryan, still recovering from an injury, sparked great energy from the bench.

Sixers 14, Raptors 11

The Sixers opened the season with a 14-11 victory over the Raptors.  Ryan Fleming and Sam White came out strong in the season opening game scoring 6 and 4 points respectively.  Also contributing on the boards were Kyle Adams and David Timmons, both playing strong offense and defense.  Braydon Aylward, Owen Kinnon, Nathan Jolly and Nick Foster all had a great first Cadet showing with attempts on the board and playing hard defense. John O’Donnell got in down low for a few rebounds off the hoop.  Pouriya Mehrabani always moved towards the hoop on offense, setting up passes for his teammates when they needed it.

The Raptors fell behind early in the game 8-2 but after that they played tight defense and made a great push in the second half by outscoring the Sixers 9-6 but fell short in the end. The Raptors leading scorer was Anthony Naghibi with 6 points.  Zach Hayes and Justin Magee each had 2 points each while Jason Svendsen added 1 point. Eric Bellavia, Daniel Richardson and Luke Montejo each made their presence know under the boards grabbing rebounds on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court.  Raptors guards Michael Gaglione and Conner Broderick pushed the ball up the court and made some great passes which led to several scoring chances. 

 

Pacers 10 - Pistons 8

The Pacers defeated the Pistons 10-8 in the opening game of the season. It was a very close match the entire game, with Cam Kearney, Billy Burris, Jack Rennell, Drew Rennell & Timmy Lepore leading the way in scoring with help from Ryan Thompson and Ian Starr. The team demonstrated excellent teamwork throughout the game helping the Pacers keep the lead.  Alex Grove demonstrated excellent passing skills and the whole team handled the ball well throughout the game.  Key defensive players were Drew Nestor and Jacob Martel, who kept the pressure on the Pistons’ guards.

The Pistons came up short in this fierce defensive battle.   The scoring heated up in the 2nd quarter and the Pistons were soon down by 4. They weren’t down for long and came back strong with baskets by Cooper Lemieux (2pts), Tim Bradley (2pts), and Morgan Dunham (4pts). The Pistons also had some key defensive steals by Nick DiCioccio and Simon Dunham while Shea Moynihan, Aaron Ramsey and Jared Krueger held the boards on defense and had many close shots on offense that unfortunately did not drop. Mathew Ramsey displayed great ball handling skills late in the game to help keep the score tied at 8 apiece.  A final shot from downtown by the Pacers in the final minutes broke the tie and the Pistons could not get it back despite a great final effort.

 

Bucks  18  -  Hawks  17     

The Bucks pulled out a hard earned 18-17 victory over the Hawks.  The Bucks got off to an early lead with a basket from William Humphries (2 points) and took a slim lead after the first quarter with baskets from Brendan Owens (2) and Dylan Paulding (8). The Bucks used strong defense and good rebounding to go along with a basket from Brian Carleton (2) to take a lead into the half. However, the Hawks used aggressive defense of their own to keep the game close and eventually take the lead early in the fourth quarter. The Bucks received key baskets from Noah Lehouillier (2) and Ryan Murphy (2) to pull within 1 point of the Hawks. With slightly over 1 minute to play in the game, Dylan Paulding took a beautiful pass from Tristen Leslie and stepped into his shot just inside the free throw line and banked it home giving the Bucks a lead that they would not relinquish. The Bucks came away with a solid 18-17 win with notable contributions coming from the passing of Leslie, aggressive rebounding from Murphy and Lehouillier in the low post as well as the lock down defense of Aiden Cram, Scott Miller and Ian Shpritzer.

In this back and forth contest William Eskenas scored a team leading 6 points. Johnny Baker pumped in 2 points. Aidan MacDonald had 4 points and Michael Hill scored 1 point from the foul line. Nicholas Ingersoll played great defense. Jack Baron made some great passes to open players, which created shots. Kyle Cummings was outstanding at keeping the point guard off balance. Michael Carlson had some key rebounds that turned into baskets. Albie Bosworth kept moving to the basket to create scoring opportunities. Ryan Feudo was super at passing the ball inbounds to the open player.

 

Knicks  12  -  Celtics  11

 In an exciting season opener for both teams, the Knicks were able to score a late hoop against a tough Celtics team to pull out a 12-11 win in a seesaw battle.

The Knicks were solid on both ends of the floor. Tyler Trodden, Joey Bourgea and Santino D’Ippolito provided strong defensive efforts from the guard position and each contributed a number of steals. In addition, they forced one jump ball after another. Scott Lightburn also had a strong showing on the defensive end by helping to control the defensive boards with a strong rebounding effort. Matt Stadtman and Seamus MacDonald made their Knicks debut successful ones. Seamus MacDonald helped the Knicks setup their offense by calmly bringing the ball up the court and Matt Stadtman grabbed several key rebounds in traffic. The Knicks offense was keyed by Ryan Flynn and Blake Ryder with both players scoring six points each. Ryan came off the bench and scored a few quick baskets and provided several second chance opportunities with some tough offensive rebounding. Trailing 11-10 with just under 3 minutes to go, Blake Ryder sank an incredible running jump shot to put the Knicks ahead for good. Blake also turned in a strong rebounding performance and was instrumental in the victory. Overall, the Knicks played a well all around game in their season debut.

Alexander Arbogast led the Celtics in scoring with six points while adding six rebounds. The team scoring was rounded out by Matthew Flynn (2), Collin Strong (2), and Cade Barron (1).  Romyn Lorick played a strong game on both ends of the floor for the C’s as well. Carter Forbes, Dominic Johnson, and Adam Saad’s efforts contributed to the game remaining close up to the end.

 

Thunder  27  -  Timberwolves  20

The Thunder hung on for a well earned win over a tough T’Wolves team in the season opener for both teams.  The Thunder jumped out to an early 10-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and then the 2 teams basically played even the rest of the way with the Wolves outscoring the Thunder 18-17 over the final 3 quarters.

The Thunder offensive attack was lead by Nicholas Alvarado with 10, Brady McHugh added 8, Connor Griffin had 5, Bobby Branchaud & Cameron Heichman each had 2 points.  Andre Monteiro was a monster on the boards, particularly on the offense glass.  Matthew Duggan was also solid on the boards and anchored a strong team defensive efforts shutting down the lane and igniting fast break opportunities.  Paul Allen, Derek Wogan, Jason Forbes, and Joshua Maher also had quality contributions on the defensive end and were instrumental in helping to move the ball on offense to set up quality scoring opportunities.

After falling behind by more than 10 points, the T-Wolves used their tenacity and up tempo style to get back into the game. The T-Wolves were led in scoring by Ian Maresca (12 points), Kodie Legrand (4points), Colby Flahive (2points) and Chandler Dubay (2points). The scorers were set up by excellent assists by Evan Galanis and Noah Healey. Key rebounds throughout the game were attained by Edward Galante and Colin Hansbury. Overall, the team played great team defense to stay close to the Thunder, demonstrated by great steals, especially by Jason Morris and David Fiorgione.

 

JUNIOR DIVISION

Lakers 22 - Cavs 12

The 2013 Junior Division season tipped off with Cavs vs. Lakers.

Both teams came to play with veterans and new players, neither team wanting to give an inch.  The Cavs scored first but the Lakers came alive with baskets by Robert Cortes (1 pt) and Jack Stadtman (4 pts). The Lakers defense kept the Cavs out of the scoring lane, with great man-to-man coverage by Lee Ghannam, Mike Wilson (2 pts) and Nick Polimeno with great steals and solid rebounding.  The Lakers kept up the scoring with Sean Fahey (12 pts) leading the way, then James Ministeri (2 pts) and great pressure on the Cavs with Mihir Bagul (1 pt). Nick Wilson and Abhi Lingareddy both showed good man-to-man coverage and rebounding by Lingareddy kept the Cavs from scoring.

The Cavs played a strong game in the tough loss.  Joey Arsenault led the team in scoring with 5 points while Joshua Astuti and Shayne Macdonald also chipped in with baskets.  Logan Frost and Dhruv Kaushal did a great job of bringing the ball up and making plays while the team got great defense from Jason Barnes,  John Cucinotta,  and Tyler Leeds.   Cavs also got great rebounding efforts from Justin Charlton and Michael Bottaro

 

Wizards 25 - Spurs 14

The Wizards got off to a strong start taking a 20-6 lead into halftime. The Spurs came back in the second half but the Wizards held on for the win. Ethan Exilhomme and David Miller led the Wizards in scoring with 9 and 7 points. Colin Goggins, Colin Fullerton, Logan Teixiera and Jonny Norwood also scored in the game. The Wizards had strong defensive efforts from Connor McFadyn, Nathan Norwood and Felix Navarette.

A superb effort was put forth by the entire Spurs team.  Dylan Dufresne led the team in scoring with (7) points. Other scorers for the Spurs were Trevor Trodden (2) points, Daedon Bree (2) points, Brady Litton (3) points. Kyle Breen along with Ryan Rosenberg both made free throw attempts for (1) point each. Matt Woods exceled at getting the ball up court to get the offense going on their scoring drives. Joshua Linnehan was one of the defensive stars with multiple rebounds and steals. Another standout was Samuel Hines who had multiple rebounds as well and was willing to sacrifice himself to tie up the ball and force a turnover.

 

Mavs 16 - Celtics 13

The Mavs pulled out a close victory on Saturday against a very tough Celtics team 16 - 13.  Leading the way for the offense was Mark Olu with 10pts.  Rounding out the scoring were Henry Pestana, Paul Tower, and Derek Wilkinson all with 2pts. Cullain Johnson and Alex Johnston both had a number of big rebounds.  Both Jordan Mackenzie and Devin Stoddard played great defense at the guard position while Josh Engelken and Nick Johnston played great defense down low to help preserve the win.

The Celtics played well, leading the game all the way into the 3rd quarter.  With great offense from Liam Macdonald with 5 points, Logan Auth 2 points , Brady Johnson 2 points, Jake Pelletier 2 points and Cameron Lamourux 2 points.  Great defensive plays from Cameron Loder, Justin Lucarotti and Seamus Cunningham. It was a nail biter at the end but just could not get the win despite a strong effort.

 

Warriors 28 - Sixers 16

The Warriors opened the season looking like they had been playing for weeks.  Strong defense and crisp passing lead to early fast break opportunities.  Sean Kaiser (4 pts), Luke McFadyen (8 pts) and Julian Costello scored first period baskets.  Ryan Melo (8 pts) and Will McFadyen (4 pts) landed on the score sheet in the second quarter.  The offense stayed strong in the second half as Sreetej Digmurthi stole the ball and drove the length of the court for a layup.  Dylan Crowley and Bryan “Big Country” Doherty captured all the big rebounds throughout the game.  Travis Cohen played great defense coming up with many key steals to keep the Sixers off the scoreboard.

Most of the Sixers scoring came in the second half from Eric Ndungo with 4 points, Cole Kimtis and Nik Smith with two points each, and Logan Reinhard contributing one from the foul line. Helping out the offense with some great passing was Jonathan Spanos and Nicholas Danielson while Damien Hadden had some great shots from the center position.  The Sixers defense was led by Robert Ryan with two steals, and Paul Spanos and Aidan Crawson with solid rebounding. 

 

INTERMEDIATE DIVISION 

Bobcats 29 - Thunder 24 

The Bobcats won their season opener over a tough Thunder team. Led by Jon Mahoney's 10 points, the Bobcats broke away in the fourth quarter thanks to two key buckets each by Billy Chase and Andrew Froio, some excellent rebounding by Matt Fronduto and many assists dished out by Jared Doyle. Sean Mac Kenzie, Evan Crowley, Tyler Strong and the entire Bobcats team played great defense throughout.

Patrick Dunn (eight points) and Derek Leffler (seven, including a three point shot), led the scoring attack for the Thunder. Richie Kramer, who also knocked down a three-point shot, as well as John Newell, Matt Brennan and Josh Kasule made significant contributions. The Thunder defense was strong as well with Robert Chisholm, Andrew Ferreira and Ryan Joyce working with other members of the team making the Bobcats work for every scoring opportunity.

 

Hornets 29- Wizards 7

The first game of the season started out well for the Wizards with defense by Rich Cappiello and John Murphy. Matt Perron, Dominic Cohen and Alec Sokol displayed great dribbling and ball control getting by the opponents’ defense and passing the ball to their teammates giving them opportunities to shoot the ball. Rebounding for the Wizards came from Sean McMahon, Nick Cappiello and Owen Gilligan. Unfortunately, with lots of opportunities the shots just would not fall for the Wizards and they ended up losing by the score of 29-7.  All players played a good game and gave a great effort.

 

Celtics 37- Bucks 36

In the season opening game, the defending Division Champion Celtics, needed a total team effort to capture the victory today against the well-coached Bucks. The final score was 37-36, and was a battle from beginning to end. Team scoring, defense, and an incredible showing by the newcomers to the Celtics, helped the team put together win #1 of the 2014 season. Evan Wood had an outstanding performance with 16 points, 8 steals, and 3 assists. Ryan Anderson poured in 9 points that included a beautiful 3 point shot to put the Celtics back in front of the tough Buck’s team. Other players who figured in the scoring were Kyle Marrocco, with 4 points and 4 steals, Patrick Letourneau with 4 points, Arya Mehrabani with 2 points, and Tyler Paulding, who also pitched in with 2 points. Ryan Smith used his size to block 4 shots on the defensive end. Kyle Burris and Nathan Jones were also important players that helped the team to victory.

What a way to start the season with a back and forth battle that in the end was won by the Celtics. Leading the way in scoring for the Bucks was Cam Grace with 8 points, followed by Jason Richardson with 7 points.  Also hitting the score sheet was Jake Winter with 6 points along with Jake Dillon with 5 points.  The following boys all chipped in with 2 points each Patrick Killion, Josh Winter, Patrick Rosemond, Michael Kelleher and Kyle Braciska.  On the defensive end Riley Auth had a great game with some key stops and big rebounds.

 

Suns 31 – Heat 25

Each player on the Suns contributed to a well-earned victory in their first game of the season.  The team effort was displayed in a well fought game which included a great all-around game. William Andella, Ryan Bennett, Matthew Dugan, Harrison Graczyk, Jack O’Neill, and Christopher Zdinak were effective with steals, rebounds and assists, and kept the ball alive with shots to the basket.  Phadunget Kaeokit led all scorers with 11, while Anthony Miano and Sean Whelton each scored 10.

 

Senior Division 

Hornets 48 – Bucks 31

The Senior Hornets kicked off their season with an impressive win over a talented Bucks team. With the majority of Hornets players having played together on other teams, they instantly gelled when faced with game situations. This led to their solid performance on offense and strong defensive stands,  keeping  the Bucks from closing the scoring gap. The Hornets’ scoring was spread throughout the team with veteran guard Matty McLaughlin dropping in 12 points which included a three point swish.  Both lines’ centers dominated in the paint with Robert Page putting in 10, and Ben Connors sinking 8 points. Several players had 4 points each Nolan Higgins (including a long range 3 pointer), Leo Frisella, and Brendan Murray.  Rounding out the scoring with their aggressive play contributing 2 points each were Daniel Derosa, and Sam Fortier and Nick Borges each assisted by Derek Steinbrecher.  

 

Bobcats over Rockets

The Bobcats came out excited to play their first game of the year against the Rockets and pulled out the victory 64-60 in overtime. Mike Flynn got the scoring started with a few fast break layups, followed up with a big three pointer by Dave Pesantes. The first quarter ended with the two teams neck and neck. In the second quarter the team started some fast break plays with Danny Carter helping advance the ball to Damian Duggan, who led the way with 10 points to help push the Bobcats to a halftime lead. The third quarter was a tough one for the Bobcats, but great defense from Josh Snyder and Jarryd Hickey helped to keep them in the game.  The fourth quarter was a see-saw ride with both teams trading baskets, including a timely jump shot by Ryan Nickerson. As the game went into overtime, Danny Nguyen got the scoring started with a jump shot to give the Bobcats the lead. As the clock ticked under a minute, Nick Heinze buried a jump shot to help secure the first win of the season for the Bobcats.
