Dewing School Celebrates Read Across America

The Dewing School recently celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday by hosting guest readers in each of our classrooms. The National Education Association annually sponsors Read Across America for Dr. Seuss’s birthday.  The program focuses on motivating children to read, in addition to helping them master basic skills. Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.

This year, our readers represent Tewksbury’s First Responders: military, police, fire, and EMTs. We are pleased to welcome our own local heroes to the Dewing School as our guest readers. Our primary reading activity this year is for children to complete a reading marathon by reading every day for 2 weeks. Most of our classrooms have a classroom penpal who will be running the Boston Marathon this April. The children understand the importance of practice and training and that a marathon is a significant event. They are rising to our challenge to read 2620 books in just two weeks. If they meet that challenge, they will have a special school event in which we run our own 26.2 lap marathon!

The Dewing School focuses on literacy activities every day to ensure that all of our students become successful and competent readers. Our planning committee included the following teachers and administrators: Jan Fuller, Assistant Principal; Robyn Hakala, Special Education; Liz Robinson, Reading Specialist; Christa Covino, Second Grade; Kathy McDermott, Second Grade; Sarah Yore, Second Grade; Shelley Wrobel, Second Grade.
