Local Hockey Player Helps Raise $4,879 for Cancer Research

The New England Stars Junior A hockey team out of Tyngsboro, Mass. presented a check to Dana Farber last week in the amount of $4,879 for proceeds from the team's annual Paint the Rink Pink charity hockey game to support breast cancer research.

As part of the check presentation, members of the New England Stars organization toured Dana Farber's facilities to see the ground-breaking cancer research and treatment center those proceeds will help support.

Team manager Daniel Fontas said the tour was a great way to culminate this year’s event.

"To be able to see what the Dana-Farber medical institute is all about was an incredible experience,” he said. “We all are affected in one way or another by this horrible disease and it is a great feeling to know that our program can help in cancer research by doing this event.  I am honored to be a part of our event and happy to know that we can help make a difference in cancer research.  All of our players and their families made a difference.”

Levi Marden, 19, of Cornish, Maine, scored the game-winning goal in the second-annual charity hockey game against the Lake George Fighting Spirit on Oct. 20. The final score was 3-2.

"Touring Dana Farber was a great opportunity and experience," Marden said. "It showed me what our breast cancer game does and how our donation helps cancer research."
