The American Legion was officially started in 1919, formed as a veterans' organization in the years after Word War I.More Over time, it has evolved into a multifaceted organization that provides a myriad of services to veterans. In addition, the American Legion is a service organization that reaches out to mentor the next generation of American heroes through programs like Boys State, American Legion baseball and its child welfare foundation.

Jackson-Gourley-Roux-Daley Post 259 in Tewksbury is located on Pond Street. The distinctive building features a main hall  and has a private club for members with an entrance in the back. The Legion hall is also home to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, as well as to the Disabled American Veterans chapter.

Tewksbury Cemetery

The Tewksbury Cemetery is also known as the "New Center Cemetery." It contains numerous historically significant graves,More including many dating back to the 18th century. An iron gate with an impressive archway marks the entrance to the cemetery on East Street. Toward the back of the well kept property is an area set aside for deceased veterans. The cemetery is located across the street from the old Center Cemetery, a small parcel that dates back to at least 1749.
