Miceli, Sears Each Feels 'Un-Endorsement' By Sun Was Unwarranted

Sun declined to endorse a candidate for the 19th Middlesex District due to the negative tone of the race.

The Lowell Sun newspaper may have finally found something that state Rep. Jim Micelli and Tewksbury Selectman Doug Sears agree on. The rivals in the race for the seat from the 19th Middlesex District both feel that the Sun's decision not to endorse a candidate in the race was unwarranted. In announcing their endorsements in the State Legislative races earlier this week, the Sun took the unusual step of refusing to endorse either Miceli, the 18-term incumbent from Wilmington, or his Republican challenger Sears. The paper's editorial board explained their decision like this: "It's rare that we take this stance but The Sun chooses not to endorse either candidate. This race has been replete with gutter personal politics and bereft of any ideas…

I want to thank both men for their campaigning! This is the only race I voted for neither and wrote in "None of the Above". Sad!   more ›

LETTER: Former Police Chief Endorses Miceli

Former chief calls incumbent "diligent" and "noncompromising."

Letter to the Editor, I have known Representative James Miceli for approximately thirty-five years.  He is one of the most dedicated, tenacious, honest and compassionate advocates for his constituents that I have ever witnessed in any form of government.  All these years, he has demonstrated the highest level of integrity.  The fire that has burned within him in fighting for Tewksbury and Wilmington has never diminished. In my tenure as Chief of Police in Tewksbury, it was my honor and pleasure to work with Representative Miceli on numerous issues.  No individual worked harder providing assistance with policy positions of the Department of Mental Health when they moved from Danvers to Tewksbury.  His efforts on this sensitive matter helped…

Miceli, Sears Exchange Accusations During Debate At Tewksbury High

From a Tewksbury Hospital land deal to credit for local projects, rivals revealed longstanding animosity.

If anyone believed Tewksbury Selectman Doug Sears and state Rep. Jim Miceli might be exchanging Christmas cards this holiday season, those thoughts were dispelled after Wednesday night's debate at Tewksbury High School. The two candidates for the 19th Middlesex District (Tewksbury and Wilmington) seat, traded barbs and accusations throughout the debate, which was sponsored by the Lowell Sun, along with media partners, the Town Crier, Wilmington Patch and Tewksbury Patch. Miceli, D-Wilmington, displayed the familiar campaign ferocity that has helped him win 18 terms in the State Legislature. But Sears, the GOP challenger making his first run for state office, gave as good as he got and the exchanges prompted several warnings from moderator …

What do you call someone who pokes his nose into a special interest group's doing collective bargaining negotiations on Town Meeting floor, who urges citizens of a town in which he is not a voter but a tolerated guest to trash the budget their public servants have negotiated over a year, and by his actions sets a precedent for other special interest groups to hijack future time meetings? Sears Interviewed On Wilmington Public Access Television

If Doug Sears, a Tewksbury selectmen is to unseat incumbent state Rep. Jim Miceli in the 19th Middlesex District, he'll have to make headway in Miceli's hometown of Wilmington. LETTER: Sears Is The Clear Choice For State Representative

Writer says Sears has shown bold leadership, while Miceli has been unresponsive.

To The Editor: Definition of Representative ~ *A person who represents a constituency or community in a legislative body *Serving to Represent *Standing or acting for another or others. With the definitions noted here, who should our State Representative be?  In my own personal experiences with both men, Jim Miceli and Doug Sears, the answer is quite clear. I contacted Mr. Miceli several times over the years for issues that were very important to me.  The one time he returned one of my calls, he was evasive, untruthful and belligerent.  I even gave him quoted examples of his “miscommunication” in public forums, to which he replied he was “misquoted”.  When I explained I have taped copies of his statements he discontinued our conversation. …

Mary: How come when a bridge gets funded through the work of many, Mr. Miceli takes the credit -- but when an intersection at Middlesex Ave.and Wildwood goes unremedied for the 35 years he is in office, it is not his problem that he's not got funds to fix it? Is this another example of his favoring your Tewksbury where the majority of the votes are over Wilmington residents? I recall Town Manager…   more ›

Sears, Miceli Trade Barbs Over Detox Center At Tewksbury Hospital

State representative candidates in the 19th Middlesex District look to draw distinct differences as campaign enters final two months.

The candidates for state representative in the 19th Middlesex District agree that the re-opening of the Massachusetts Health Department Detox Center on the campus of Tewksbury Hospital is a good thing. But that's as far as it goes. State Rep. Jim Miceli, D-Wilmington, and his GOP challenger, Tewksbury Selectman Doug Sears, differ significantly on who has done what to boost Tewksbury Hospital and the agencies that share its campus, both now and in the past. "(Sears) had absolutely nothing to do with it," said Miceli of the efforts of legislators to get the Detox Center re-opened. "It was myself, Tommy Grogan, Kevin Murphy. (Sears) was never involved with that." For his part, Sears acknowledges that he wasn't part of the process to restore …

Rick: The Wilmington project is the biggest financial undertaking the town has ever taken. Reps. get involved in such matters. What's happened? After Town Meeting voted to build the school, an abuttor raised a concern that the proposed turf field will poison his well. He -- and a handful of others claiming an old school fuel tank spill will adversely effect health -- appealed to the DEP to kill …   more ›
