Former State Rep. L’Italien Seeks Return to House

Andover Democrat will take on State Rep. Jim Lyons, R-Andover, in newly constructed 18th Essex District.

(Editor's note: The following information was submitted by state representative candidate Barbara L'Italien. As of Jan. 1, 2013, the 18th Essex District will include Precincts 3 and 3A of Tewksbury.) Stating she will be a “better representative,” Barbara L’Italien announced her campaign to represent the new 18th Essex District.  “When I served in the MA House of Representatives I made it my priority to help my constituents—not grandstand for political points,” said L’Italien. “My neighbors in this district deserve better than what they have today. L’Italien represented several Merrimack Valley communities for 8 years in the legislator, earning a reputation as a responsive legislator who worked with members of both Parties to deliver …

Sen. Brown, Elizabeth Warren Weigh in On Health Care Decision

Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown and his Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren react to the Supreme Court's decision on the Affordable Care Act.

Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) and his challenger in the 2012 election, Democrat Elizabeth Warren, clashed in their reactions to the U.S. Supreme Court's health care reform ruling. On June 28, the court decided 5-4 to uphold the mandate for individuals to purchase health insurance, the most controversial component of the Affordable Care Act. According to the Huffington Post, if the mandate had been ruled unconstitutional, the minority opinion shows that the conservative justices were ready to throw out the entire law. President Obama proposed the law and spent much of the first 15-months of his presidency drumming up support for health care reform. As expected, Brown and Warren differed in their responses to the decision. In a …

Three, Possibly Four, Initiatives Likely to Make Fall Ballot

Ballot to be finalized by AG's office on July 3.

Of the 31 initiatives put forth for the fall ballot, only four have enough signatures and been certified by Attorney General Martha Coakley in order to make the ballot by the July 3 deadline. And of those, one looks likely to be resolved by the Legislature before that date. The initiative that appears likely to reach resolution is called "An Act Promoting Excellence in Public Schools." Backed by Stand for Children Massachusetts, it involves retaining and promoting teachers based on performance reviews and test scores rather than seniority. Proponents say it will raise teaching standards and make it easier for schools to fire ineffective teachers. But opponents, which include the Massachusetts Teachers Association, say that evaluations are …

Tierney Blasts Tisei's Patch Chat

The congressman accuses his opponent of being evasive.

(Editor's Note: Congressman John Tierney represents the 6th Congressional District, which will include Tewksbury as of the November election. He is being challenged by Republican Richard Tisei.) There was a lot of discussion after congressional candidate Richard Tisei's Live Chat on Patch. Most people who commented afterward seemed to think he did well and at least answered questions quickly and candidly. But there is one person definitely not impressed -- his opponent, Congressman John Tierney. In a statement issued this week, Tierney blasted Tisei's Patch performance, accusing him of dodging important questions and issues. It singles out the GOP congressional budget known as the "Ryan Plan" as well as several social issues. "The simple …

Tisei: I'll Be An Independent Voice

Here's a recap of Friday's live chat.

Richard Tisei joined us for a live chat Friday, and one theme was prevailant throughout -- Tisei says if elected to represent the new 6th Congressional District (which will include Tewksbury) he will be an independent voice in Congress. He cited his experience as a Republican in a heavily-Democratic legislature and having to work with the other side to get things done. A couple of readers expressed concern about whether that can translate to a seat in Congress, which seems to be more polarized than it's ever been. Here are some of the highlights from the chat. Comment From Peter J. Solomon 3: As a former constituent of yours, I view you as having been a pretty independent minded state senator. If elected, can we count on you to be as …

District 6 Ad War Continues [Poll]

Congressman Tierney is taking on Tisei over "Young Guns" designation.

(Editor's note: Tewksbury is presently in the 5th Congressional District, represented by Congresswoman Niki Tsongas. But as of the upcoming election, it will shift to the 6th District, presently represented by John Tierney.) Congressman John Tierney has unleashed another attack ad online, going after challenger Richard Tisei for Tisei's status as one of the Republican Party's "Young Guns." The ad shows Republican House members and tea party favorites Paul Ryan, Kevin McCarthy and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, referring to them as a "tea party trio," and then cuts to Richard Tisei (in an unflattering green and black backdrop) and calls them "The New Recruit." "One thing is clear," the ominous voice on the ad says. "If we vote for Tisei, we …

Adams Kicks Off Campaign for State Senate

Calling for fiscal reform in Massachusetts, Adams is determined to increase Republican presence in the State Senate.

Running on a platform of lowering taxes and an end to overspending, state Rep. Paul Adams, R-Andover, held his official campaign kickoff Thursday night at LaRosa’s Café.   Approximately 40 friends, family, and local politicians came to support the 30-year-old candidate’s bid for State Senator of the 2nd Essex and Middlesex district, which includes Andover, Dracut, Lawrence and Tewksbury. If Adams succeeds in winning the Republican nomination this Sept. 6 against Andover Selectman Alex Vispoli, he will face incumbent Sen. Barry Finegold in the general November election. Adams who was elected to the State House of Representatives in 2010, said he wants to “take Massachusetts in a new direction.” Standing for values and principles, he said he…

Tisei Announces Campaign Leadership Team

The team has some pretty familiar faces.

As the 6th congressional district campaign rages forward, Congressional candidate Richard Tisei is bringing big names on board. Team Tisei has announced a Leadership Team made up of former gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker, State Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr and State House Minority Leader Brad Jones. Tisei ran as Baker's runningmate in 2010. The duo lost that election to Gov. Deval Patrick, but Baker did win the majority of votes in the 6th congressional district. “I chose Richard Tisei to be my runningmate in 2010 because he had an outstanding reputation as an independent minded and effective legislator," Baker said. "That’s exactly the type of person  we need in Washington to break the logjam and move this country forward. …
