There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to the cause of cancer, its treatment or prevention. Genetics certainly play a role but lifestyle and diet and can also come into play. It’s hard to get through the month of October without realizing that it is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It seems that for 31 days everyone wants to wear pink in support of breast cancer education, research and awareness. Denise and Alyssa Martucci both of Tewksbury attended the kickoff breakfast for the 20th annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Boston. The five-mile fundraising walk will help the Society do the most for people with breast cancer today to end the disease tomorrow. They were joined by emcees Candy O’Terry of MAGIC 106.7 and Adam Williams of 7News on 7NBC and CW56. Denise and Alyssa will be two of some 40,000 people making strides to end breast cancer Sunday, Oct. 14 at the DCR Hatch Shell in Boston. Third-grader a veteran of Relay for Life.
Jack Bieren, 8 Third grade, North Street School Accomplishment: Jack has raised more than $6,000 for the American Society by participating in Relay for Life for the last four years. Reason for Awesomeness: In nominating her son Jack as a Whiz Kid, Karen Bieren said, "Jack has participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life for four years. He has raised approximately $6000 for cancer. Every year he chooses someone to walk for that beat cancer or is currently fighting cancer. In kindergarten Jack walked for his teacher, Patricia Elwell who is a cancer survivor. Last year he walked for his friend Katie Diamond. Katie was a student at Tewksbury High School fighting thyroid cancer. She continues the fight as she attends …
