Dear Editor, I first met Barry Finegold just after we moved to Tewksbury several years ago when he knocked on our door and introduced himself as a candidate for State Representative. What impressed me about Barry was that he took the time to knock on doors and really listened to what we had to say. Over the years I have seen Barry at countless meetings in Tewksbury listening to and working with the resident of our town. Additionally as our State Senator, Barry has held 'Listening Meetings' at the town library for any Tewksbury resident to share their ideas and concerns. My experience with Barry and his staff is that they are very accessible and responsive. Barry grew up in Tewksbury and has never forgotten where he came from. He has …

To the Editor: As a member of the last graduating class of the “old” Tewksbury Memorial High School, the first graduating class in recent memory to send two students to Harvard, I can speak to just how vital our public education system has been to the success and growth of students in our community. The importance of our schools became even more apparent to me this summer, when I had the privilege of interning in the office of our State Senator for Tewksbury, Barry Finegold. During my few months in his office, I came to appreciate just how much time and attention Senator Finegold spends in our community. One of the most frequent topics that came up during my conversations with Senator Finegold was how we can make public education in …

Dear Editor, I am writing in support of State Senator Barry Finegold's candidacy for State Senate. As a local official and a mother of of three school aged children, I have a vested interest in the upcoming State Senatorial election in terms of education. From my experience, I have found our State Senator Barry Finegold to be a strong advocate for education and exceptionally supportive. He has demonstrated his commitment countless times. Barry was in the forefront of support for our new Tewksbury Memorial High School which has proven to be a source of great pride for our community. Barry's common sense approach coupled with his leadership and accessibility make him a viable candidate. Barry been resourceful in assisting with …

The candidates for the Second Essex and Middlesex state senate seat, incumbent Sen. Barry Finegold and State Rep. Paul Adams, sparred over a variety of issues at Memorial Hall Library Wednesday.
State Rep. Paul Adams (R-Andover) and State Sen. Barry Finegold (D-Andover) debated in front of a crowd of roughly 120 at Memorial Hall Library in Andover, Wednesday evening. Adams talked about changing a trend in state government by bringing more Republicans into the legislature and ending the "tax and spend" attitude of the Democratic majority, according to an article in the Lowell Sun. Finegold criticized Adams for not voting for a bill which lowered the cost of healthcare, a bill that Adams said would only increase taxes. While the two also disagreed over the ways to help small businesses, the two agreed on issues such as providing assistance for returning war veterans and training for the unemployed. Republican Doug Sears says he is anxious to debate state Rep. Jim Miceli, D-Wilmington, as many times as possible in the days leading up to the Nov. 6 Election. Miceli has made clear he will only agree to one debate. That one debate will take place on Oct. 24 in the Tewksbury Memorial High School Auditorium. The event will be sponsored by the Lowell Sun and will feature a media panel including representatives from Patch and the Town Crier. Tewksbury Patch and Wilmington Patch had invited Sears and Miceli to participate in a one-on-one debate at Tewksbury Town Hall on Oct. 11. Similarly, the Town Crier had teamed with the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce and Wilmington Public Access Television for a debate in Wilmington. In both cases Sears …

Reader says Finegold has shown independence in the State Senate.
To the Editor: I am writing as a typical middle class Tewksbury resident tired of the partisan rhetoric going on during this campaign season. Watch the TV and all you see on the ads is back and forth negative chat about this and that. It seems like no one is taking the side of the voters. On a local level and in our Senate race I am looking for a candidate that will not vote in lockstep with his party and who reaches across the aisle to come up with solutions. I want to be represented by a candidate who will not only have an independent voice in the Senate, but one who also votes what is best for the community even if it’s not a politically popular one to do. Barry Finegold stands up for the Tewksbury communities needs. He has been …

State Rep. Paul Adams grabbed just enough votes to beat Andover selectman Alex Vispoli in the race for the Republican nomination for the Second Essex and Middlesex senate district.
State Rep. Paul Adams will be challenging Sen. Barry Finegold for his seat in the state senate in November, according to unofficial election results. Adams won the Republican nomination on Thursday, beating Andover selectman Alex Vispoli by less than 100 votes. Adams beat Vispoli, garnering 50.87 percent of the votes in the Second Essex and Middlesex district, which consists of Andover, Tewksbury, Dracut and Lawrence. In votes, Adams beat Vispoli with 2,648 votes to 2,557 votes. Finegold won the Democratic nomination unopposed. Vispoli did win the hometown he and Adams share, beating Adams 1,267 votes to 754 votes in Andover. Adams won in Tewksbury (678-404), Lawrence (368-352) and Dracut (848-534). Voter and campaign participation is almost nonexistent in the first several hours of the State Primary.
What if you threw an election and nobody came? OK, that's a bit of hyperbole. But not by much. When it comes to today's State Primary, many voters seem to be saying, "Get back to us in November." According to Election Wardens at polling places throughout Tewksbury, voter turnout has been extremely slow as of 12 p.m. As of the Municipal Election in April, there were 20,709 registered voters in Tewksbury. At the present pace, 15 percent participation would seem overly optimistic. But what is more amazing is that there are scarce few campaigners holding signs and waving to voters outside the polling places. There were just two campaigners, both holding signs for incumbent state Rep. Jim Miceli, outside the Senior Center on Chandler Street. …
