Boys' and girls' basketball teams fall against Central Catholic.

They were rewarded this week when they each cracked the Top 25 in the Massachusetts High School Hockey Rankings published by Boston Herald columnist Jim Clark in his "In The Slot" blog. The rankings are calculated using the Ratings Percentage Index. As of Jan. 8, the RPI rating system has the Tewksbury boys (5-1-1) ranked No. 21. Tewksbury 7th Grade Basketball Team Wins Merrimack Valley Championship

The following was submitted by Jay Ward.

March Madness is an NCAA college tradition, but the Tewksbury 7th Grade Boys took the phrase to whole new level this past weekend.  The Merrimack Valley Basketball League held it Championship Tournament and the Redmen team walked away with the Central Division title after a heart pounding wins over Pelham, Dracut and Methuen in the tournament finals.  Entering the tournament, the 7th Grade Boys were the number 2 seed after a posting an impressive 14-2 record during the season.  The only two blemishes on the team’s record came at the hands of the division’s perennial powerhouse, Methuen.  In fact, the Redmen boys were 0-8 against the Methuen team over the past 3 years..  Earning the number 2 seed in the tournament was not an easy task.  …

Redmen Roundup: Andover Outshoots Redmen, 56-43 [VIDEOS]

Tewksbury High boys basketball streak can't snap home winless streak; girls basketball team loses at Andover.

Senior point guard Bobby Lumbard once again had the hot hand for the Tewksbury High boys basketball team Tuesday night, but one weapon was not enough for the Redmen as they came up short against a talented Andover squad, losing 56-43. Lumbard sank five consecutive three-pointers and led all scorers with 20 points, but six different Andover players scored five or more points and the Redmen came up empty at home in spite of a spirited defensive effort. "It's pick your poison against them," said Tewksbury High coach Phil Conners. "That's another good team. They were 5-1 coming in, and the way we played defense in the first half, we should have been winning. But if you can't score, you're not gonna win." Lumbard was the only Tewksbury player …

Redmen Can't Match Up With Unbeaten Melrose

Despite strong effort, Tewksbury High boys basketball team suffers 66-42 road loss.

If the Tewksbury High Redmen thought they were in for a good chewing out after losing by 24 points to a very talented Melrose team on Friday night, they might have been surprised by coach Phil Conners' upbeat talk with the team after Melrose High topped TMHS, 66-42. "That's the happiest I've ever been after a 24-point loss," Conners said after emerging from the locker room. "We had a good game plan today; we did a good job with it in the first half. We're showing signs. I'm encouraged. That's a very good team and we did a good job against them." Indeed, the Redmen stayed right with the undefeated (5-0) and highly-regarded Red Raiders, trailing by just three points at 24-21 with two minutes to play in the first half. But as has been the …

Tewksbury Boys Basketball League Roundup

TBBL Crowns Three New Champions

Blazers, bucks and Hornets earn titles in thrilling championship games.

(Editor's note: The following information was provided by the coaches and administrators of the Tewksbury Boys Basketball League.)  Blazers capture championship, edging Rockets, 43-39 What an end to a great season for the Blazers going 15-1. Not only was it a great game but very entertaining for all. George Hopkins should be commended for the hard work and success he had with a very talented Rockets team. The Blazers had a little redemption from last years’ loss in the championship game. With only four returning players and seven new Blazers it would have been very easy to consider this season a rebuilding year. From day one they showed the ability to play unselfish basketball. The championship game was a back and forth affair with the …

One Good Half Not Enough For Tewksbury Girls

Billerica tops TMHS, 60-34, In Holiday Tournament Finals.

For the first two quarters of Thursday night's championship game at the Billerica Holiday Tournament, it was difficult to tell which team was the experienced, high-scoring favorite and which team was the inexperienced underdog. Unfortunately for the Tewksbury High girls basketball team, the final two quarters made things perfectly clear. Leading by only eight at halftime, Billerica's senior -laden line-up outscored the youthful Redmen girls by a two-to-one margin in the second half and pulled away to a 60-34 victory that earned the host team the tournament's top trophy. "We played a real good first half, but Billerica showed up in the second half and Tewksbury didn't," said TMHS coach Mark Bradley. "We're a young team and they've got a lot…
