Are students at risk of losing some of their summer vacation?
Question: Another winter storm is expected to dump another foot of snow Sunday. If Tewksbury loses more days of school, when will the school year end? Answer: Interesting question. At the start of the school year, the last day of school was scheduled to be June 19. Having lost a day for snow and another day for an emergency, school is now scheduled to end on ... June 19. According to Tewksbury School Department officials, five snow days are built into the schedule at the start of the school year. So, at this point, there could be three more snow days and school would end on June 19. However, if there are no more snow days, school could end as early as June 16.

With rain in Tewksbury's forecast for Monday, the Blizzard of '13 may not be finished wreaking havoc in Massachusetts. While temperatures dropped overnight on Friday resulting in light, fluffy snow, he Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) warns that fluffy snow piled high on roofs can act as a sponge, absorbing rain and adding additional stress to structures. Relatively flat roofs are particularly vulnerable, MEMA says. In other cases, roof ice dams have formed causing water build-up, leading to interior damage. These conditions can accelerate the snowmelt. To minimize the risk of over-stressing a building roof due to accumulated or drifting snow: Information from a release by the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA…
Huge amounts of snow, mechanical failures add to challenges.
Town Manager Richard Montuori said Tewksbury has weathered the Blizzard of '13 fairly well but he is asking the public to be patient when it comes to the clearing of the town roads. As estimated 27 inches of snow buried the town over a span of around 26 hours. But despite the heavy snowfall and winds that topped 35 MPH, Tewksbury avoided the widespread power outages that impacted more than 160,000 National Grid customers, mostly to the east and southeast. "Overall things have gone well considering the magnitude of the storm," said Montuori. "We have been told by National Grid that there are 150 customers without power in the Merrimack Valley and one in Tewksbury. According to National Grid's liaison, power should be restored by this …

Dr. David Harnois of Harnois Chiropractic offers advise to residents.
(Editor's note: This article was first published on Jan. 14, 2011.) Shoveling snow, particularly after a big storm, can be a dangerous activity. If precautions aren't taken, the simple act of trying to clear out your drive or walkway can result in a back injury, pulled muscle or worse. Dr. David Harnois offers advice on how to do it safely. “The proper procedure would be to [stretch out first],” said Harnois, of Harnois Chiropractic, 2500 Main St. "So that you don’t begin shoveling without loosening up.” This is where many people make their first mistake. Next, in conditions like this, where you need to shovel heavy, wet snow, try not take a whole shovel full, said Harnois. “Only take as much as you are comfortable with.” This may involve…
