IMAGE GALLERY: Trahan Students Create Origami Cranes to Aid Relief Efforts

Students, parents and staff have created more than 500 cranes and raised more than $300 for the Red Cross Japan Relief Fund.

There are many schools across the United States that put together fundraisers to aid in the humanitarian relief efforts for Japan. But the students, staff and parents of the Trahan School took it a step further and combined a fundraising activity with a chance to learn about a cherished piece of the Japanese culture --- Origami. Origami is the Japanese art of folding pieces of paper is various images, particularly animals. In the case of Trahan, the students, teachers and parents created cranes. The project stated on April 27 and, to date, over 500 cranes have been created. Students Hear One Man's Story of Overcoming Adversity

Randy Pierce of VisionQuest 2020 Visits the Ryan School.

On the Fourth of July last year Randy Pierce and his dog Quinn climbed Mount Washington. No small feat, especially considering that Randy has lived with complete loss of vision for over a decade. Randy has plans to hike all 48 of the 4,000-plus foot peaks in New Hampshire by 2020, only accompanied by his guide dog and some help from the VisionQuest 2020 team. Randy Spoke to the students at the Ryan Elementary School in Tewksbury to inspire them to overcome their own challenges that life throws at them. He told them if they only take away two things from his presentation. "One: Everything you do in life, you can influence," he said. For example, if they want better grades, they can study harder. Kumon Center Students Awarded for Hard Work

Students receive trophies for their achievments.

Students enrolled at the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Tewksbury are proving that hard work and daily practice pays off. As a result of attending weekly study sessions, several students have made significant academic improvements and are studying above their school grade level.   An award ceremony on April 30 at Kumon Center of Tewksbury honored the academic successes of Kumon students. Students were recognized in different categories and those working ahead of their school grade level were awarded trophies. Younger students (ages 3 to 5) working at Junior Kumon level and Junior Kumon graduates (who are now working independently) were also awarded trophies. Tewksbury Boys U11-2 Patriot Youth Lacrosse League Tournament (Recap) The Tewksbury BU11-2 team played in the mid season Patriot Youth Lacrosse League Tournament, here in Tewksbury on Saturday. The kids played 4 games with much improvement each and every game. In the first game against Littleton-4, the boys came out strong but fell to a very big and talented Littleton team. The boys next played Arlinton-2. The boys played a good game before falling to the very quick and aggressive Arlington team. TMHS Boys Take Third At Division 2 Relays

Kirby, sprinters lead boys while Caprio, Clark and Spinelli set javelin record.

On a state-wide level, the Tewksbury High boys track team isn't over-loaded with superstars. Aside from senior sprinter Anthony Arcari and senior all-purpose man Richard Kirby, there aren't many TMHS athletes who are a legitimate threat to win an individual Division 2 state championship this spring. But what the Redmen do have is depth, and plenty of it, which came in very handy at Saturday's Dvision 2 State Relays at Whitman-Hanson High School. Led by the first-place 4x200-meter relay team of Kirby, Pat Bernardo,  Arcari and John DiGiorgio, the Tewksbury boys placed in the top six in eight different events and piled up 42 points, good for a somewhat unexpected third place finish in the meet. Many hands made for light work, as the playground got a face-lift.

Students, parents and school staff joined forces last weekend to clean up the Center Pre-School Playground on Pleasant Street. Trash pickup, raking and general organization all were part of the project. Teamwork made the project a success and photographer Maggie Judd was on hand to capture these images of the efforts.
