The Austin Preparatory School boys hockey team, featuring one Tewksbury resident, took an early lead on Sunday before falling to three-time champ Malden Catholic.
A young Austin Prep boys hockey team, featuring one Tewksbury resident, wasn't enough to handle now three-time champion Malden Catholic in the Super 8 final. But don't be surprised to see the Cougars on the ice of TD Garden again in the very near future. Austin Prep scored 14 seconds into Sunday's Division 1A title game, but the Lancers scored the next three goals of the game. As a result, Tewksbury's Scott Duarte and his teammates were forced to settle for second place after eventually suffering a 3-2 setback. But the Cougars graduate just six seniors from their team, though one of them will be leading scorer Nolan Vesey. Tewksbury High dominated play but were doomed by a red-hot goalie.
Division 2 North First round Watertown 3, Tewksbury 2 Those who know hockey well will tell you that goaltending can be the great equalizer, especially in a single-elimination tournament. The Tewksbury High boys hockey team dominated play in their Division 2 North Tournament game against Watertown, Tuesday night in Stoneham. But despite a whopping 47-16 edge in shots on goal, the Redmen were eliminated, 3-2. The difference in the game was the play of Watertown goaltender Anthony Busconi, who made one spectacular stop after another and finished with 45 saves. Girls Basketball falls in final of Spartan Classic.
Boys Hockey Tewksbury 3, Lincoln-Sudbury 2 If teams make the mistake of thinking they can shut down the Redmen by shutting down the Petti Brothers, Tyler Slavin is more than happy to set them straight. On Monday, Slavin scored a pair of goals to lead Tewksbury to a 3-2 win over Lincolcn-Sudbury. The win clinched the MVC/DCL D-2 Championship for the Redmen. Slavin's second goal game with just 16 seconds left in regulation to snap a 2-2 tie. Dario Riparo scored Tewksbury's first goal of the game. Pat Doherty, Derek Petti, Matt Donovan, Ryan Petti and Michael Casey had assists the Redmen. Kyle Paquette earned the win in net with 15 saves. Boys basketball moves to within one victory of the State Tournament.
Boys Hockey Tewksbury 6, Concord-Carlisle 2 Tewksbury 5, Boston Latin 2 With every game, the Redmen look stronger and stronger. Led by the first line of Tyler Salvin and the Petti brothers, Tewksbury rolled over Concord-Carlisle, 6-2. Slavin led the way with two goals and three assists. Derek Petti and Ryan Petti added two goals and two assists each. Sophomore goalie Kyle Paquette earned the win in net with 18 saves. Derek Petti and Ryan Petti each finished with 2 goals and 2 assists for Tewksbury. Dario Riparo, Jeff Giasullo and Shannon Alukonis had 1 assist each for Tewksbury. Wrestling Dracut 48, Tewksbury 21 The Redmen put up the best fight they could but they were unable to stop the Midshipmen from clinching the MVC D2 championship with a 48-21 win. There were some highlights for Tewksbury. Tim Martel earned a hard-fought 5-3 overtime win over Dracut's outstanding 182-pounder, Stig McElhinney. Joe Martell earned a pin at 120 in just 1:00. Nick Falcone scored a pinfall win at 138 in 5:05. At 195, Dan Donovan notched a pinfall win in 1:25. Boys knock off Andover, girls pick up important tie with Wayland/Weston
Boys Hockey Tewksbury 3, Andover 1 Excellent defense, stout goaltending and just enough offense carried the Redmen past Andover, 3-1. Captain Derek Petti once again led the offense with a pair of goals and an assist. Mike Casey added the third goal. Ryan Petti had two assists and Pat Doherty had one. With the victory, tournament-bound Tewksbury upped its record to 10-2-1. Sophomore goalie Kyle Paquette turned in another excellent game between the pipes, turning aside 23 shots in the win. Thomas Breaks School Record In The Mile at MSTCA Meet Cory Thomas put forth his best run of the season in one of the biggest track meets of the year. Thomas placed third in the Mile at the Mass. State Track Coaches Association Meet over the weekend at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Thomas' time of 4:22.68 shattered a 38-year-old Tewskbury Memorial High record that had been held by James Stronach. "Cory is getting stronger and stronger. Coach (Peter) Fortunato has done a tremendous job with him," said Coach Bill Meuse. "Cory has been terrific all season, but is starting to reach another level. Boys Track Division 2 State Relays The Tewksbury High boys track team turned in an outstanding effort over the weekend, placing third at the Division 2 State Relays. The Redmen finished with 32 points behind Woburn (37) and Reading (33). Tewksbury got second place finishers from the Distance Medley team of Brian Amaral, Roy Felix, Nick Souza and Cory Thomas and the Long Jump team of Cory Cataldo, Roy Felix and Kevin Jones. Both team's set new school records in the process. Also placing second was the Shuttle Hurdles team of Cory Cataldo, Kevin Jones, Eddie Matovu and Dom Rosado. Boys and girls hockey teams tumble vs. Lincoln-Sudbury.
Wrestling Tewksbury 32, Haverhill 30 The Redmen won a thriller over the Hillies, with the meet coming down to the final match of the day at 285 with Tewksbury's David Morris taking on Haverhill's Matt Haskell. The two big men kept the crowd on the edge of their seats through three periods, with Morris pulling out a heart-stopping 10-9 victory to give the Redmen the meet victory. Other winners for Tewksbury included: Mike McAteer at 106 by forefeit, Joe Burger at 145 by pinfall, Broc Dokos at 170 by pinfall (1st period), Tim Martel at 182 by pinfall in overtime and Dan Donovan at 195 by forfeit. Girls hockey gets back on the winning track.
Boys Hockey Tewksbury 5, Boston Latin 1 It took Derek Petti less than a minute to take care of the milestone and his teammates only slightly longer to disaptch Boston Latin, 5-1, on Saturday. Petti scored the first of his two goals just 30 seconds into the game, giving him 100 points for his high school career. The victory improved the Redmen's record to 7-1-1 on the season and ran their unbeaten streat to eight games. Kyle Paquette turned in another tremendous game in net for Tewksbury, turning aside 30 shots. Ryan Petti, Mike Casey and Dario Riparo added single goals in the win.
