Redmen Roundup: Boys and Girls Hoops Teams Can't Handle Knights

Boys let halftime lead slip away, girls put forth great defensive effort.

Girls Basketball Andover 38, Tewksbury 26 The Tewksbury High girls gave the three-time defending Division 1 State Champs all they could handle for three quarters before falling, 38-26. The Redmen (3-7) put together their strongest defensive game of the year and did an excellent job on the boards to keep the game close. Chelsee Porcaro dropped in seven points and Nicole Hamel added six to lead the Tewskbury offense. Redmen Roundup: A Tough Day For TMHS Basketball, Gymnastics Teams

Chelmsford sweeps past Redmen hoops teams.

Boys Basketball Chelmsford 72, Tewksbury 51 A mid-season slump continued for the Tewksbury High boys basketball team, as they fell at home to Chelmsford High, 72-51. Alex DiRocco led the Redmen (4-6) with 13 points. Freshman Justin Derrah added 12 points and junior Kevin Dick added 11. But Tewksbury couldn't overcome the Chelmsford gunner Voshon Holmes, who drained six 3-pointers on his way to a 34-point night. He was unstoppable in the first half, scoring 22 for the Lions (5-6). Redmen Roundup: Boys' and Girls' Ice Hockey Teams Continue Their Hot Play

Boys basketball team can't overcome slow start against Haverhill.

Boys' Basketball Haverhill 76, Tewksbury 52 The Tewksbury High boys' basketball team played a strong second half Friday night at home against Haverhill. Unfortunately, it came after one of their worst halves of basketball this season. The Redmen fell behind 46-16 after two quarters and fell to the Hillies, 78-52. It was the first loss at home this season for the Redmen (4-4). Kevin Dick had 11 points to pace the TMHS offense. Haverhill got a game-high 28 points from Matt Jameson. Junior guard Kevin Dick's 11 points led Tewksbury, which fell to 4-4 and will next host Central Catholic on Tuesday. Redmen Roundup: Chaet, Smith Lead Girls Hoops to Tournament Title

Boys basketball falls short in tournament final against Wilmington.

Girls Basketball Tewksbury 48, Falmouth 37 Through the first three games of the season, the _Tewksbury High_ girls basketball team struggled to find its identity and a winning touch. A little holiday magic has turned things around. The Redmen used a stifling defense and a balanced offense to capture the Melrose Holiday Tournament with a 48-37 win over Falmouth High. Five different TMHS players scored at least seven points. Forward Shannon Smith paced the Tewksbury attack with nine points and eight rebounds. Senior Nicole Chaet had eight, while Shannon and Sara Semenza and Kelli Sugrue chipped in with seven points each. With the win, Tewskbury improved to 2-3 on the young season. Redmen Roundup: Boys, Girls Hoops Teams Play For Tournament Titles

Tewksbury High teams have been buys over school vacation week.

Boys Basketball Tewksbury 58, Littleton 55 The Tewksbury High boys basketball team will renew their Route 38 border war with Wilmington High tonight in the finals of the Sons of Italy Holiday Tournament. The Redmen continued their excellent early-season play, holding off previously unbeaten Littleton High, 58-55. It looked like it would be a rout early on, as Tewksbury roared to a 35-17 lead at halftime. But Littleton clawed their way back into the game and was within striking distance in the fourth quarter. In the final minutes, some clutch free throws by Kevin Dick iced the win for the Redmen (4-2). Tewksbury freshman Nate Tenaglia led all scorers with 19 points, including 13 in the first half. Redmen Roundup: Tenaglia Leads Boys Hoops Past Tyngsboro, 65-58

Young Redmen continue to impress early in the season.

The Tewksbury boys basketball team jumped back over the .500 mark Friday night with an impressive 65-58 win over Tyngsboro. The Redmen are 3-2 on the season and 3-0 at the new Tewksbury High gym. Underclassmen continue to get the job done for Tewksbury. Freshman guard Nate Tenaglia led the way with 16 points. Junior guard Kevin Dick added 13 and freshman forward Justin Derrah continued his strong play with 12 points. The Redmen are back in action Thursday in the first round of the Knights of Columbus Holiday Tournament at Wilmington High. Girls Basketball Tyngsboro 62, Tewksbury 31 The Redmen are still looking for their first win of the season (0-4) after a 62-31 loss on the road to Tyngsboro. Nicole Chaet led Tewksbury with 12 points.

Redmen Roundup: Boys, Girls Basketball Teams Tumble

Boys fall to Lawrence, girls struggle against Billerica.

Boys Basketball Lawrence 68, Tewksbury 58 The _Tewksbury High_ Boys Basketball team saw its two-game win streak come to an end at the hands of a strong Lawrence High team, 69-58. The young Redmen hung tough with the Lancers, trailing 41-33 at the half. But Tewksbury was never able to make a serious run in the second half. Joe Csomay paced the Tewksbury offense with 13 points. Freshman Nate Tenaglia added 12 and Alex DiRocco dropped in 11. With the loss, Tewksbury drops to 2-2 overall, 1-2 in the MVC. Redmen Roundup: Boys Basketball Wins Thriller Over Bedford

DiRocco nails three-pointer from the corner to win it for Tewksbury.

In a game that saw several lead changes in the fourth quarter, the Tewksbury High boys basketball team dug deep and pulled out a 69-66 non-league win over Bedford, Monday night. Sophomore Alex DiRocco paced the Redmen with a game-high 19 points, including 17 in the second half. DiRocco was white-hot from the field after intermission and drained a three-pointer from the corner that gave Tewksbury the lead for good in the final minute. Redmen Roundup: North Andover Too Much for Redmen Hoops Teams

Tewksbury High teams fall in season-openers.

Merrimack Valley Conference newcomer North Andover made its presence felt in a big way Tuesday night, sweeping Tewksbury High in boys and girls season-opening basketball action. The Redmen boys fell, 66-42. Kevin Dick led the way for Tewksbury with 15 points and six rebounds. Kevin Haley chipped with 12 points for the visiting Redmen (0-1). The story was much the same, at home, for the Redmen girls, who fell behind 23-9 after one quarter and never posed a serious challenge, falling 53-28 to powerhouse North Andover. Senior Nicole Chaet paced the Redmen (0-1) with 11 points. Nicole Hamel added five points. Leah Chittick led all scorers with 16 points for North Andover.

Redmen Edged By Marblehead In State Tournament Overtime Thriller, 46-43

Tewksbury High boys basketball team is eliminated from the state tournament in the first round.

If nothing else, you have to give Phil Conners credit for putting the excitement back into Tewksbury High basketball. First-year coach Conners and his TMHS Redmen had a packed house full of fans sitting on the edge of their seats all night, putting on a spirited defensive effort for four quarters before suffering a heartbreaking, 46-43 overtime loss to Marblehead High in the first round of the MIAA Divsiion 2 North Sectional tournament Tuesday night in Marblehead. "It was our best defensive game of the year," said Conners afterward. "We just didn't do it offensively. We didn't attack their 1-3-1 (zone defense) the right way.
