Sequestration Budget Cuts Data: Which MA Counties Have the Most Federal Employees?

MIddlesex County has more than 9,000 federal employees, most of whom work in defense.

The numbers here show the federal employees in Massachusetts by county in 2012, according to the latest figures from Eye on Washington, a DC-based lobbying firm that tracks federal employment. It compiles the data from the Office of Personnel Management, Federal Employment Statistics and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While much has been made written on how the current sequestration battle in Washington could affect the national economy, these numbers are meant to give readers a sense of the sequestration at the local level. No one knows for certain what the sequestration cuts, some $85 billion, will mean exactly. Even if the March 1 federal cuts are enacted, the full effects would not be felt immediately. The government is required to …

Sequester is a 2% reduction in GROWTH not a cut! I am sick of the press parroting the Obama Administrations lies! The Defense budget was to GROW 20% and will now GROW 18%! Non-discretionary spending set to GROW 14% will GROW 12%! This is insane! and the low information voters and media need to educate themselves! This reminds me of the 1920's or 30's when Hurst and Pulitzer tried to increase the …   more ›

Massachusetts Would See More Than $91.6 Million in Cuts Under Sequester

Do you wonder what the 'sequester' will mean for Massachusetts? A White House report gives examples of where federal aid would be cut.

Massachusetts would see more than $91 million in federal funds cut from a myriad of programs if Congress fails to act this week to avoid the sequester, the Obama Administration said Sunday. In a move designed to pressure Republicans into accepting new taxes on the wealthy as part of a deal to prevent the sequester from taking effect on Friday, the White House released reports that outlined how those cuts would impact individual states, Huffington Post reported. Here are some examples of what's on the chopping block for us here in Massachusetts, according to the report: After the reports were released, congressional Republicans criticized the Obama administration for the PR move, The Huffington Post reported. “Rather than issuing last-…

Why must Obama always threaten us with cuts to important things? Why not cut foreign aid and/or excessive entitlements? Wouldn't that make the most sense?! If a family needs to make cuts they don't cut food and gas, they cut the extras like movies and lattes. I'm sick of his scare tactics!!!   more ›

Tewksbury Officials Gearing Up For Local Aid Cut

Gov. Deval Patrick asking Legislature for an immediate one percent cut in local aid.

With State Government facing new budget difficulties, local officials have been told to prepare for a "trickle-down" impact. On Tuesday, Gov. Deval Patrick announced actual state revenues were significantly lower than projections, resulting in a $540 million budget shortfall for Fiscal Year 2013. As a result, the governor announced he will be implementing $225 million in immediate budget cuts, some of which may impact Tewksbury. He has also asked the Legislature to expand his authority, allowing him to make an immediate, across the board, one percent cut in state aid for FY13. In the case of Tewksbury, which has been slated to receive roughly $15.5 million in education and municipal aid this year, it would mean the loss of approximately $…

LETTER: Friend Angered That Nurse Was Let Go After 45 Years

Reader believes that Lowell General/Saints Medical handled situation in a "despicable" manner.

To The Editor: Words from her loving and compassionate daughter, " The end of an era. After 45 years of Oncology nursing at Saints Medical Center my mom, Sandra Creamer, (Ph.D Certified Oncology Specialist) got a telephone call, while recuperating from knee replacement surgery two weeks ago, telling her that Lowell General has eliminated her job and the Saints Cancer Center is closing. The crude and inhuman delivery over the telephone is one of the most despicable corporate moves I have ever seen. The Thousands of patients and caregivers she has treated and LOVED will remain her legacy but I am saddened that Lowell General can just dismiss her impact as easily as throwing out the trash!" Some comments from friends and coworkers: Horrible, …
