When it comes to philanthropy, Tewksbury residents give to charity less than the state and country averages, according to a study released this week. They also give less than most of the residents in other Middlesex County communities. "The Chronicle of Philanthropy" published their "How America Gives" study which reported that Tewksbury residents, with a median discretionary income of $55,267, gave a median contribution of $1,216 of their income to charity in 2008—the tax year when the data was gathered. Meanwhile, the state and country's median contribution was 2.8 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively, compared to Tewksbury's 2.2 percent. Tewksburians contributed a total of $9.3 million, according to the study. Here's a complete …

Helping families prepare for the school year ahead.
With August upon us and fall approaching rapidly parents and kids alike are starting to turn their thoughts to back to school. For some families that means casual trips to the mall and shopping for first day clothes and supplies. For others, however, the back to school season means yet another set of expenses that simply are not in the family budget. Thanks to one young Tewksbury resident, Ashley Toland, local families throughout the Merrimack Valley are going to get some much needed help during these difficult times. For the third year in a row Ashley is organizing the Backpack Attack Drive and collecting school supplies and backpacks that will eventually be donated to and distributed by The Wish Project in Lowell. “Now more than …

Golf balls rain from the sky to support T.H.E. Farm.
It was just a normal Saturday afternoon in Tewksbury, until hundreds of golf balls fell from the sky! In an effort to raise money, T.H.E. (Tewksbury Hospital Equestrian) Farm held their first ever golf ball drop. Each golf ball cost 20 dollars, and the three closest golf balls to the hole would win a prize, the top prize set at 1,500 dollars. A crowd of just over 50 watched as a helicopter circled a field on East Street before dumping its payload. The winners were Lorna McElaney, of Tacoma, Washington, Joyce Morency, of Lawrence, and Emily Bersin, of Tewksbury. Susan Lorenti, T.H.E. Farm's president, says the golf ball drop is now their second biggest fundraising event and hopes to hold it again next year.

Karen Daley has a large family. In total, it numbers over 50 members. Her family is nontraditional. They sweat together. They lift weights together. In Daley’s words, the ladies she leads in exercise classes are her family. Daley leads classes at the Dance Infusion Studio at the Village Green, located at 1555 Main St., a street level establishment that Daley describes as “bright and clean.” She has been at that location for 4 and a half years. Prior to instructing at the Dance Infusion Studio, she taught at a Lowell gym that changed hands in 2006 to become Planet Fitness. When they stopped hosting fitness classes, Daley found herself out of work. Daley said that after that point she would often see women around Tewksbury who had taken her …

When it comes to automobile sales, you could say that Terry “Reed” Atamian has been around the block -- and back again. The dealer recently celebrated his 42nd year of President’s Day sales at his location at 150 Main St. The history of the Atamian family in the automobile industry, however, goes further back than that. The Atamians began selling cars as early as 1919, but it wasn’t until 1924 before the family sold their first new car. They have been in the business so long, in fact, that several of the car manufacturers of their early dealerships no longer exist: Hudson, Rambler, Nash, and American Motors. The Atamian family has dealt in so many iconic brands that Reed has trouble remembering them all. “The list goes on. I’m probably …
