The Choice to Have Children

My children are my world. I don’t mean that my life revolves around my children. What I mean is, I cannot imagine my world without them.

Many people get married and have kids right away, because that’s what’s expected.  We chose to wait, instead. In fact, we waited so long that when we told my husband's parents we were having a baby, my mother-in-law said, "oh, we’d given up on you!" It was funny, but it was also a reminder of the common pressure most people feel from family, or friends, or even society as a whole. It was important to us to be sure that raising a family was something we both wanted.  Just deciding to start a family was a nearly four-year process!  Even after we decided that we'd like to have children, we waited until we really felt ready: emotionally, psychologically, and financially.  They say that you're never ready to have children, and there's some …

Maureen, good column. I remember well when you came into voting and you were pregnant. I cannot believe that they are 5 and 3!! I wanted to tell you, in my opinion, having children is an education. But, the big bonus is, when you have grandchildren. It is amazing how much you love those grandchildren who are a part of us. That's what you have ahead of you years from now.   more ›

VIDEO: New League, New Hope

Challenger Division gives all kids a chance to play Little League baseball.

One year ago, Tewksbury Youth Baseball president, Frank Flanagan, announced plans to create a "Challenger Division" in Tewksbury. Challenger Divisions are a part of Little League Baseball, they are for kids of all ages whose disabilities prevent them from joining other baseball leagues. "It's an opportunity to get the kids away from the parents," says Flanagan, "and let someone else show them a little fun with the game of baseball." The league's first game was May 8, 2011, Mother's Day.  They started with about 10 players, but after two weeks, the league has doubled in size.  Parents like Shane Nevins whose six year-old son Christopher is autistic, says the league means a lot. "It's amazing," says Nevins," to see him out there, I just can'…

Keeping the Romance Alive

Remember to take off the mommy & daddy hats every now and then.

People who know me know that my life is an open book. I'm comfortable talking about my personal life with family and friends.  My husband is the opposite, in that he does not discuss details about our marriage with anyone but me.  So when I mentioned the topic of this article to him, it was natural that he raised a skeptical eyebrow.  I assured him that I would not be spilling intimate details of our love life on the web, but that I felt it was a topic that other moms might like to read about. Before we had children, my husband and I took spur of the moment getaway trips.  We would go to Montreal or the Berkshires for the weekend, or maybe do a day trip to the Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Waterbury, Vermont.  Little things that required …

Thanks Kelli! You're right about the kids. Obviously mine are younger, so this is written from that perspective, but the concept is the same. Glad to know that other people do the 'scheduling' thing too.   more ›

Birthday Party Planning Tips

A step-by-step guide to help you plan your child's birthday party.

I absolutely love celebrating birthdays. Whether it’s my own birthday, my husband’s, my children’s, family, friends, I just love them.  I know some people don’t really care about their birthdays and honestly, that’s sad.  Birthdays are a celebration of life!  And we should all enjoy every birthday that we are blessed with. Not only do I love birthdays, but I love planning birthday parties.  From kid’s parties to a surprise 80th, I’m all over it from beginning to end.  For today though, I’m going to share some tips on planning a kid’s birthday party. Like I mentioned in my previous article, I’m a planner.  So when I start to plan my children’s birthday parties, I usually have a date picked out several months in advance.  It’s always good to…

Moms Talk Q & A

How do I Keep my Son Sleeping in His Own Bed?

Moms Council offers advice on children's sleeping habits.

Bedtime is a tricky time for the parents of young children. What time is the right time for bed? When do you take a child out of a crib and put them in a "big kids" bed? This week, the Moms Council tackles another bedtime problem -- the issue of kids wanting to hop into bed with mom and dad every night. Here's the advice the council provided to one mom dealing with this issue. Dear Moms Council, My three-year-old son has gotten into a habit where he will only fall asleep if he goes to be between me and my husband. This has been going on for three weeks and I know its not a good habit but I dont know how to break him of it. This has become a source of tension and some arguments between me and my husband. Any ideas on how to get him to sleep…

Children Report Man Ran After Them

Report prompts Reverse-911 call to Chandler Street neighborhood.

Tewksbury Police, aided by K-9 units, searched a Chandler Street neighborhood on Monday, searching for a man who allegedly charged at two young children playing in a backyard. The incident began around 2:30 p.m., when a Chandler Street resident called police and said her daughter and a friend were playing in their backyard when a man emerged from the woods and ran at them. The children ran into the house and told the mother. The man, meanwhile, went back into the woods, according to reports. The woman described the man as being around 5'7", with a stocky build and brown hair, wearing a dark blue sweatshirt. According to Deputy Police Chief John Voto, every available officer was sent to the scene and officers on the day shift stayed on duty…

Moms Talk Q & A

How Much of an Allowance Should I Give my Child?

The Moms Council weigns in on teaching fiscal responsibility.

The Tewksbury Patch Moms Council is made of of moms throughout the community from all different walks of life. Each week, the moms tackle a different question posed by readers of Tewksbury Patch on issues of life, family and motherhood. This week the moms take on the topic of allowances. Dear Moms Council, "President Obama has declared April "Financial Literacy Month." Any parents out there have success handing out allowances? If so, how much?" Here are what the moms had to say: Sue Panilaitis: Unfortunately, my husband and I would go broke if we gave allowances to each of our six kids.  Instead we have taught them that being part of a family means we all contribute to the work and upkeep of our household without monetary rewards or …
