Jess Bridle, Chris London and Kevin Saunders among others head off to various colleges to continue their atheltic careers.
As Tewksbury High fall sports tryouts get underway later this week, many of last year’s standout athletes from the 2012 senior class are about to kick off yet another athletic season too. Track superstar Jess Bridle is off to Bucknell University in Pennsylvania this fall after coming off one of the most successful track careers in TMHS history. Finishing with a Division 2 State Championship, multiple Merrimack Valley Championships and TMHS school records, Bridle will run track for the Bison at Bucknell. A three-sport captain in volleyball and both winter and spring track, TMHS athletic director, Brian Hickey is confident Bridle’s success will continue at the collegiate level. “She’s truly a special level of competitor,” Hickey said. “…

Running back Chris Bettano and linebacker Derek Tarpey represent Tewksbury on the North Squad in the annual all-star game Gillette Stadium.
The South All Stars topped the North All Stars, 15-12, in the 34th annual Shriner's Football Classic at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro Friday night. It was a surprisingly crisp and competitive game, considering that the players have only practiced together a handful of times and hadn't donned their football gear since at least last December. Running back Chris Bettano and linebacker Derek Tarpey represented Tewksbury on the North Squad. TMHS Brian Aylward served as an assistant coach for the North. The North took a 6-0 lead when John DiBiaso connected with Burlington's Kyle Shields on a three-yard pass play. The missed extra point, however, bode ominously for the North. The South came right back, sparked by two long pass plays engineered by …

Tewksbury sees its dreams of a Super Bowl championship dashed at Gillette Stadium.
No controversy, no last-second heartbreak. Just a much better opponent. The Tewksbury High football team saw its championship dreams snuffed out, 35-0, by Duxbury High in the Division 2 Super Bowl, Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. Any hope Tewksbury had of pulling off a major upset was dashed by halftime as the Dragons, who lived up to all their hype, built a 28-0 lead. Duxbury coasted in the second half, putting the finishing touches on its second straight 13-0 season and running its overall winning streak to 27 games. Tewksbury finished its season at 7-6. "I'm proud of these kids," said Tewksbury Coach Brian Aylward. "It's always tough to end with a loss but I'm proud of the way our kids fought. We gave our best but our best …

Undefeated Duxbury returns to defend its 2010 Super Bowl title, unbeaten in 26 straight games.
The Tewksbury High football team has relished the role of the underdog all season long, and things will be no different for the Redmen this Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium when TMHS clashes with undefeated Duxbury in the Eastern Mass. Division 2 Super Bowl (3:30 p.m.). Simply put, the Green Dragons are the class of the division in this state, having won 26 straight games, not the least of which was a 35-13, 2010 Division 2A Super Bowl victory over Concord-Carlisle last December. Duxbury has rolled to a 12-0 record so far this season, running the table in the Patriot League Keenan Division, while scoring an average of 32.4 points per game and allowing a measley 6.8 points against. Prior to Tuesday night's 7-0 playoff win over King …

Tewksbury High football team storms into Reading and dominates the Rockets, 21-6.
Three short months ago, it would have been difficult to find anyone who thought the Tewksbury High football team was going anywhere this season. On Saturday, the Redmen are going to Gillette Stadium to play in the MIAA Division 2 Super Bowl against unbeaten Duxbury (12-0). Game time is 3:30 p.m. Led by stellar efforts from their three senior tri-captains -- quarterback Kevin Saunders, running back Chris Bettano and linebacker Derek Tarpey -- coach Brian Aylward's Tewksbury High Redmen once again played the role of giant killers Tuesday night, storming into Reading to steam-roll the heavily favored Rockets, 21-6 in an Eastern Mass Divison 2 playoff game. Bettano carried 21 times for 75 yards and a touchdown, and also caught an 11-yard …

Senior quarterback leads Tewksbury to a 28-21 win over Wilmington
_Tewksbury High_ quarterback Kevin Saunders will be the first guy to tell you that his senior season has been one full of ups and downs. The TMHS signal caller has been knocked out of two games with injuries this year, and has turned the ball over in critical situations in several games. But then again, Saunders has led the Redmen on a remarkable journey, too, piloting the team to historic wins over Andover, Central Catholic, Lowell and Dracut this fall. But if Thanksgiving Day games are the ones you always remember, Saunders will have to look back on this year as a great one, as the Tewksbury captain came up with what was undoubtedly the best offensive performance of his career in leading the Redmen to a thrilling, 28-21 come-from-behind …

Tewksbury High football team squares off against its Turkey Day rival with a play-off date set for next week.
For the first time in 15 years, the Tewksbury High Redmen will head into their annual Thanksgiving Day showdown with Wilmington knowing that this will not be their final game of the season. TMHS, the 2011 Merrimack Valley Division 2 champion, will play Reading High next Tuesday in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 North playoffs, but don't worry about the Redmen looking ahead to Reading and coming out flat against Wilmington at Doucette Field on Thanksgiving morning. That, according to Tewksbury High head coach Brian Aylward, just ain't gonna happen. "We've talked about the fact that we've been invited to play some more football the week after Thanksgiving, but that doesn't change anything," Aylward said. "If anything, it puts more …

Lions clinch MVC Division 1 Championship as senior QB Colby Emanouil steals the show.
It was supposed to be a showdown between the top two running backs in the Merrimack Valley Conference. Tewksbury High's Chris Bettano against Chelmsford's Eddie Sheridan, head-to-head, toe-to-toe. But in turned out to be the Colby Emanouil show Friday night at Chelmsford's Simonian/Alumni Stadium, as the Lions' senior quarterback stole the spotlight by throwing for two touchdowns and running for another, leading Chelmsford to a 35-16 victory. The win, combined with Billerica's 42-14 loss to Central Catholic Friday night, clinches the MVC Division 1 championship for the Lions, who will now represent the league in the MIAA playoffs later this month. "The last few weeks teams have really been focusing on Eddie (Sheridan)," said Emanouil after…

Tewksbury's Division 2 title bid hits a roadblock; Redmen are down but not out.
On a night when the Tewksbury High football team could have locked up its first playoff berth in 15 years if things had gone right, nearly nothing did, and the Redmen suffered a heart-breaking 27-20 loss to Haverhill on a last minute touchdown. Tewksbury could do little to stop the stellar passing effort of Haverhill quarterback Tommy Morgan, who completed 16-of-24 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns, matching a super human effort from Tewksbury senior running back Chris Bettano. Bettano, who had rushed for 249 yards and three touchdowns against Andover back in September, somehow managed to eclipse that amazing total by two yards, carrying 37 times for 251 yards and scoring all three of Tewksbury's touchdowns in the game. The 5-9, 160-…

Tewksbury High football team pulls out critical but nerve-wracking 26-24 overtime victory against Methuen.
With temperatures dropping and Nor'easter type conditions worsening by the minute, the Tewksbury High football team hopped on the back of senior running back Chris Bettano and pulled out an all-too-close but so very important, 26-24 overtime victory over Methuen Saturday aftenoon at Doucette Field. The Redmen, who entered the game in an unfamiliar role as the favored team, got all they could handle from the Rangers, who were (and still are) winless in the Merrimack Valley Conference this year. Bettano carried 32 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for the game-winning conversion points in overtime, as TMHS held on to first place in the MVC Division 2 title race with a gut-wrenching but critically important victory. The …
