How Many Gifts Is Appropriate For Kids on Christmas?

Many parents find themselves trying to "keep up with the Joneses"

Yesterday, when speaking to a friend, an interesting subject came up. She had been reading updates on Facebook and one of her friends had posed a question that she found a little odd. It seems that this mom was looking to find out how many gifts other families were leaving under the Christmas Tree for their children. Upon reading further she found that a number of people had chimed in and basically given counts on what their kids would be getting for the holiday. I have to admit that, like her, I found the whole post just a bit disconcerting. Yes, we all like to spoil our children on Christmas. We want to see their faces light up when the open gifts and, often, are just as excited as they are. What I don’t understand, however, is taking …

VIDEO: Christmas On Rockvale Road

By decking their homes in lights and decorations, the residents of Rockvale Road provide a Christmas gift each year to the residents of Tewksbury.

(Editor's note: This video was first published on Dec. 23, 2011.) Sure, there is THAT house. But Christmas on Rockvale Road is an event that goes well beyond just one residence. Nearly all of the homeowners on Rockvale (located off Shawsheen Street) participate by trimmed their homes and yards in tens of thousands of lihts and dozens of decorations and props, turning Rockvale Road into a Christmas Village. Editor Bill Gilman stopped by this week and offers this video tour.

Tewksbury Police Officers To Visit Boy With Cancer

More than 40 police departments left the Burlington Mall this morning to deliver cards to 6-year-old Nathan Norman in Rustburg, Virginia.

The only thing on Dawn Norman's wish list this holiday season is that her 6-year old son Nathan lives to see another Christmas—and that his wish of receiving cards, letters and patches from as many police officers, fire fighters and EMTs is fulfilled. Why? Because police officers, fire fighters and EMTs happen to be Nathan's heroes. As reported on New Milford Patch three years ago, Nathan, who lives with his family in Rustburg, Virginia, was diagnosed with brain cancer. "I remember the doctor saying that there was an abnormality," Dawn Norman remembers. "The doctor kept telling me over and over that there was an abnormality and then it hit me. He was telling me that my son had cancer." Like most little boys, Nathan loves to watch cops, …
