Not only do the Ryan School 6th Graders do battle in turkey-toting relay races, they also gather hundreds of pounds of food for the Tewksbury Community Food Pantry.
Most people like their Thanksgiving turkeys roasted. But the students at the Ryan School prefer theirs frozen. On Wednesday, Ryan School students participated in the annual Turkey Trot Relays. But the relays, in which teams of students make their way through an obstacle course while toting a fozen turkey, is just part of the tradition. The students also gather hundreds of pounds of food each year for the Tewksbury Community Food Pantry. Editor Bill Gilman was on hand Wednesday and captured these images.

Dear Tewksbury Lions’ Club, On behalf of the Tewksbury Community Food Pantry Board of Directors, I would like to express our appreciation to the Tewksbury Lions Club for their most recent $5000.00 donation. This generous donation came at a critical time. It helped support many individuals & families that currently rely on our food pantry. Thanks to you, we were able to assist almost 250 households with non perishable goods through the summer months when canned donations are typically low. Over the past eleven years, the Lions have now quietly donated over $45,000 to our volunteer community effort, without fanfare. Without the reliable & consistent support from the Tewksbury Lions, the pantry would not be able to meet the monthly food …

At time when the need is even greater than usual, the Tewksbury Lions Club has come through with a $5,000 donation for the Tewksbury Community Food Pantry. According to Food Pantry Board member Todd Johnson, 2012 has been a challenging year, in part because the annual Postal Service Food Drive gathered only about one-third the donations of previous years. "We have a more extreme need now because of diminished resources in other areas," said Johnson, adding that the food pantry serves around 250 families in Tewksbury. Lions Club Board members Joan Toscano and Fred Baldwin were on hand Thursday to present the $5,000 check to Patty Haverstat, vice chairwoman of the CFP Board of Directors. The Lions have been strong supporters of the Food …

Three months after opening, Walsh is dedicated to being a different kind of salon.
When Terri Walsh opened Salon 1475 on Dec. 20, 2011 she immediately knew that she wanted it to be a different kind of hair salon. With 33 years of experience as both a hairdresser and a cosmetology teacher, Walsh was more than familiar with all aspects of hair styling. She knew that having the right staff made all the difference and that, above and beyond everything, treating your customers well would lead to success. For Walsh, however, success can be measured in a number of different ways. Not content to simply sit behind the front desk and manage her salon Walsh is, as she explained, “happiest when I’m behind the chair.” For Walsh, getting to know her customers and their families along with working in a fun and relaxed environment …

(The following information was submitted by the administration of the Ryan School.) On Wednesday, Nov. 23, 6th grade students at the Ryan School experienced a rite of passage as they competed in the annual Turkey Trot. Teams competed by earning points through a poster making contest, collection of donations for the Tewksbury Community Pantry, and a series of relay races (involving a frozen turkey, of course). Although the competition is for 6th grade only, 5th grade families were also invited to donate items to the Pantry. Parent volunteers transported the three mini-vans full of donations to the pantry after the competition. This is the 10th year for the Turkey Trot. Team 6B won their first Turkey Trot this year. Mr. Ron Drouin/gym …

OK, so we've had a little Thanksgiving history and we've had a little turkey trivia (special thanks to the historian who corrected my mistake last week). Now it's time for a lesson in humility. I can see how in these difficult times lots of people can become overwhelmed. Not only is this the beginning of the Holiday Season, it is also the beginning of the depression season for many people. The housing market stinks, the stock market stinks, the job market stinks, the price of gas is nearly $4 a gallon. Throw in heating your home this long winter, and how about Holiday shopping and presents and and and ... Personally, 2011 has not been such a kind year for me. The bad economy is troublesome but pales in comparison to a sick child or the…
