A Tewksbury man will spend the next two-and-a-half years behind bars after pleading guilty to multiple drug charges this week in Woburn Superior Court. According to Tewksbury Police, Salvatore Matranga, 45, was sentenced to 30 months in jail for possession with intent to distribute a class B substance. When he is released from prison, Matranga will serve another five years of probation (including mandatory drug testing) on additional charges of possession with intent to distribute a class B substance (2 counts), possession with intent to distribute a class C substance, and possession with intent to distribute a class E substance. Two alleged dealers face charges; Oxycodone, crack, heroin seized.
The Tewksbury Police Department continued to wage a determined war on local drug trafficking with two more arrests on Wednesday. Benjamin Torres-Ramos, 30, of 247 Salem St, 3rd Floor, Lawrence, was arrested and charged with possession with the intent to distribute a class B substance (crack and cocaine) subsequent offense, and possession with the intent to distribute a class A substance (heroin). The arrest came after Tewksbury Police Detectives stopped Torres-Ramos' vehicle around 3 p.m. for a motor vehicle violation on South Street. Obeying the speed limit is a good idea -- especially if you're carrying a substantial amount of drugs and you're already wanted on outstanding charges. Tewksbury Police pulled over Joseph Szulewski, 22, of 700 Merrimack St, Apt 2R, Lowell, at around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning (Dec. 4) or speeding. But Szulewski didn't walk away with just a ticket. When the officer has Szulewski's name run through the computer, it was discovered he had an outstanding warrant from Somerville District Court for Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon. Federal forfeiture case now rests in the hands of the judge.
The fate of the Motel Caswell now rests in the hands of U.S. Magistrate Judge Judith Dein. Testimony and closing arguments concluded Thursday in the motel's drug forfeiture trial in Federal District Court in Boston. Dein has taken the case under advisement but it may be some time before she renders a decision. She has given both sides in the case an additional three weeks to submit written briefs, according to an article published in the Lowell Sun. This means it will likely be mid-December, at the earliest, before a verdict is handed down. Tewksbury Police officers say they didn't trust Russ Caswell and admit they never met with him to discuss ways to improve safety and security at the motel.
Testimony started this week in U.S. District Court in the forfeiture trial targeting Tewksbury's Motel Caswell. Federal prosecutors, citing a series of 15 drug arrests and investigations at the motel between 1994 and 2008, have accused motel owner Russ Caswell of failing to take reasonable to action to stop the drug activity and have asked a judge to order that the $1.3 million property be forfeited. Testifying so far this week have been Tewksbury Police Lt. Dennis Peterson and Lt. Thomas Casey. Two men, including a Tewksbury resident, were convicted late Thursday in federal court of selling drugs at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bedford. Steve Jakaitis, 49, of Lowell, pleaded guilty to distribution of buprenorphine and conspiracy to distribute oxycodone. David Robson, 53, of Tewksbury, pleaded guilty to distribution and conspiracy of oxycodone. Jakaitis and Robson, both of whom are veterans, were charged in January. Had the case proceeded to trial the government’s evidence would have proven that in 2011, Jakaitis sold buprenorphine to an undercover federal agent, and conspired with Robson to sell oxycodone to an undercover …

A Lowell woman is facing drug charges after Tewksbury Police officers allegedly witnessed her selling cocaine in the Woburn Street area. According to information provided by Police Chief Timothy Sheehan, Ana Ramirez, 55, 183 Moody St., Lowell, was arrested Tuesday night, Sept. 20. Tewksbury Police Officers, with help from officers from Lowell and Billerica, set up a drug surveillance operation in the area of Woburn Street and Lowell Street. According to Sheehan, the department had received numerous complaints from residents drug activity in that area.
