Accident seriously injured 83-year-old man.
A Tewksbury woman has been sentenced to prison for a drunk driving accident that seriously injured an 83-year-old man back in 2011. Mary Beth Chandler, of 437 Chandler St., was found guilty earlier this month of OUI-liquor (second offense), OUI-causing serious injury and failure to grant right of way by a jury in Lowell District Court, according to an article that appeared in the Lowell Sun. Last week, a judge sentenced Chandler to 15 months in prison, with 94 days credited for time served. Her license was revoked permanently and once she is released from jail, she will remain on probation through March 9, 2018. Quick response by the Tewksbury Fire Department limited the damage from a fire that broke out in a barn at Krochmal Farms on Tuesday afternoon. The call came in around 3:15 p.m., reporting a working fire inside the barn, located off South Street. Firefighters had to run a hose from South Street but still managed to contain the fire from breaching the walls or roof of the barn, which was not being used to house animals at the time. Damage estimates and a cause of the fire were not immediately known. No injuries were reported. A Tewksbury homeowner spotted a man allegedly breaking into his vehicle and his sharp eyes and detailed description helped police quickly track down the suspect. According to a Tewksbury Police report, the Chandler Street resident called dispatch at 7:43 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, to report that a man had just broken into both of his vehicles while they were parked in his driveway. The man described the suspect as white, around 25, wearing a gray sweatshirt. He said the man escaped in a late 80s or early 90s grey/silver Pontiac Grand Am heading toward Pine Street. Windham, NH Police didn't have to go far to make an arrest early this morning after they found a man passed out in his driver's seat and parked in the restricted employee lot at the police station. Jonathan Sullivan, 31, of 140 Judith E Drive in Tewksbury, was arrested at 1:45 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicating drugs or liquor. Officers responded to the restricted parking lot after a dispatcher located the vehicle on a security camera. The vehicle was running at the time of the arrest. Officers woke up Sullivan and conducted a thorough investigation which included field sobriety tests. Sullivan was released on $500 personal recognizance bail and given a court date of Jan. 28, 2013. Police Dispatch received a 911 call Sunday morning (Dec. 30) reporting that a man had severed his finger in a snowblower accident. The call came in at 10:33 a.m. from a residence on Chester Street. Full emergency medical response was dispatched to the scene. The man was rushed by ambulance to Lahey Medical Center in Burlington. There was no immediate word on his condition or if the finger was able to be reattached. A woman suspected of assault resisted arrest in such an aggressive manner that Tewksbury Police officers were forced to use a TASER to subdue her. The call came in just after 9 p.m. on Dec. 18. A male caller reported that he had just been assaulted in an apartment on Main Street. Officers responded to the scene and after a brief investigation, attempted to arrest Janice M. Lombardi, 52, 1830 Main St., Apt. 18. According to the police report, Lombardi resisted arrest in such a manner that officers had to administer "2 applications dry stun, 1 taser." A Wilmington man was arrested Tuesday morning (Dec. 18) after driving his car off the road and striking a utility pole. The accident took place around 10:40 a.m. at the intersection of Birch Street and State Street. During the course of responding to the accident, officers determined the driver had been impaired and did not have a valid license. Keegan S. For one woman, the joy of being newly engaged lasted less than a half-hour. The woman called Tewksbury Police from Stadium Plaza on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 9:51 p.m. She told dispatch that about 25 minutes after her future husband had proposed to her, she lost the engagement ring. She described the ring as being white gold and the stone as being a 1 ct. solitaire, emerald cut. Often times, illegal dumping is dark of night ... and for good reason. At around 3:15 p.m. on Monday, Tewksbury Police received a call from the manager of the RTN Federal Credit Union on Route 38, reporting a man who was dumping items into the credit union's dumpster behind the building. According to the caller, the man had also been dumping items into the dumpster used by Harrow's Chicken Pies. Police notified the Harrow's manager of the situation. The caller was able to describe the man's vehicle and provided a license plate number to police. An officer went to the home of the man to discuss the allegations. Very quickly, the man confessed. Troopers from all over New England want to help local drivers stay safe and prevent crashes during the holiday season.
The holidays are upon us, and many residents will be traveling this week to see family and friends all across New England. State Police are doing their part to help ensure these visits don't end in tragedy because of impaired or distracted driving. The Massachusetts State Police joined forces with other New England State Police divisions at headquarters in Framingham to explain their C.A.R.E program. Increased patrols this week will be cracking down on impaired/drunk driving, texting while driving and seatbelt law violations, among other things.
