UPDATED: Overnight Fire Damages Jade East Restaurant

Two-alarm blaze caused significant damage.

Updated: 2 p.m. An early morning fire caused between $5,000-$10,000 damage to the Jade East Restaurant on Route 38. The two-alarm fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. and was called in by someone at the Motel Caswell, according to Fire Chief Mike Hazel. Firefighters arriving at the scene discovered flames coming through the roof at the front of the building. A preliminary report filed by Fire Investigator Lt. Scott Keddie indicates the fire appears to have started as the result of an electrical problem in the ornamental facade over the front door entrance, said Hazel. Firefighters had the blaze knocked down in about a half-hour by crews from the Central. North and South Stations. Damage was confined to the facade and the roof of the building, …

Firefighters Save Man's Life, Woman Reports Meat Sold From Pickup

The following information was supplied by the Tewksbury Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Tewksbury Firefighters were on the scene to save a heart attack victim Wednesday night. According to Fire Department reports, dispatch received a call at 6:20 p.m. from a commercial building at 836 North St. regarding a man having a seizure. Firefighters from the North Station were able to respond within one minute and when they arrived on scene, they found that the man was in full cardiac arrest. Firefighters used a defibrillator on the man and by the time he was loaded into the ambulance, his breathing and heartbeat had been restored. The man was transported to Lowell General Saints Campus for further treatment. David Giasullo Graduates from Massachusetts Firefighting Academy

Second generation firefighter awarded certificate by his father.

(Editor's note: The following article is based on information submitted by Tewksbury Fire Chief Michael Hazel.) Tewksbury Firefighter David J. Giasullo graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy as a member of Recruit Class #197 on Dec. 21. The 12-week training program covers all aspects of firefighting as well as having demanding academic and physical fitness components.  The program is designed to train and evaluate students in the basic skills of firefighting. “This rigorous professional training provides our newest firefighters with the basic skills to perform their jobs effectively and safely,” said Fire Marshal Stephen Coan. “Completing the recruit program is an accomplishment worthy of recognition in and of itself.” said …

Two Tewksbury Firefighters Honored for 30 Years of Dedicated Service

Powers and Sitar honored at Board of Selectmen meeting.

Two Tewksbury Firefighters were honored this week for 30 years of service to the department. Firefighter Stephen M. Powers and Captain Michael W. Sitar Jr. were honored in a ceremony at the Dec. 18 Board of Selectmen meeting. Fire Chief Michael Hazel said Powers, hired on Oct. 31, 1982, has served as an outstanding mentor and role-model to younger firefighters. "Firefighter Powers is one of those guys that knows his job and can tell you what's right and maybe not so right on a fire scene," said Hazel. "It’s something we look for our senior members to do in positive way, to transfer their knowledge and experience to the younger members of the Department." Chief Hazel Graduates Management Training Program

Program offered by the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy.

Tewksbury Fire Chief Michael Hazel was one of 32 fire service personnel from 32 communities who graduated from the 20th offering of the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Chief Fire Officer Management Training Program. The graduation ceremony took place on Dec. 13. The thirteen-week program was developed in accordance with National Fire Protection Association Standards for chief fire officers, and is delivered jointly by the University of Massachusetts Collins Institute Center for Public Management and the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. Suspicious Package Forces The Evacuation of Walmart

Hundreds of holiday shoppers got a dose of humbug on Tuesday (Dec. 11) when a mysterious package forced the evacuation of Walmart. Tewksbury Police received a call at 4:34 p.m. from a person reporting a suspicious package on the ground at the retail store on Route 38. The caller said the package was a styrofoam container inside a box and another box. The Fire Department responded to the scene and the State Police Bomb Squad was called in. The store was evacuated at around 5 p.m. The store was re-opened when it was determined the boxes did not contain an explosive device. Arrests: Anne M. Fire Damages Algonquin Drive Home

Smoke detectors and quick response limits damage.

Functioning smoke detectors and quick response from Tewksbury firefighters limited damage from a fire at 28 Algonquin Drive Tuesday night. According to Fire Chief Michael Hazel, the fire began in the utility room in the basement of the home, around 10:20 p.m. A resident was alerted by a smoke alarm and found smoke coming from the utility room and called 911. According to town records, the home is owned by Joseph and Sharon Sodergren. Upon arrival firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the back door of the home.  Firefighters from the South Fire Station, Engine 2, forced entry into the basement through the rear bulkhead, said Hazel. Selectmen's Notebook: New Firefighters Hired, Introduced

October Special Town Meeting won't be broadcast live on public access.

For the first time in quite a while, the Tewksbury Fire Department is fully staffed at all three of its stations. At the Sept. 12 Board of Selectmen's meeting, Chief Michael Hazel introduced the department's two newest firefighters, James Fitzpatrick and David Giasullo. Giasullo, a second generation "jake," recently completed four years as in the Marine Corps, where he trained and worked as a firefighter. He had just four days of department training before working his first shift. "He acclimated very well to how we do things despite just four days of training," said Hazel. "He’s a quick learner." Fitzpatrick has been working with the TFD since November 2011 as a "temporary" firefighter before being named to a permanent position earlier …

One Injured As Crash Ties Up Traffic On 495 For 17 Miles

Car winds up wedged under tractor trailer.

One woman was as injured Wednesday as the result of a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 495 in Tewksbury at the height of rush-hour traffic. The accident took place just before 7 a.m. between exits 35 and 36, according to a report published on Boston.com. The crash too place in the southbound lane but traffic was tied up on both sides of the highway for a total of 17 miles, from Methuen, all the way south to Route 2. The crash left the woman's car pinned under a tractor trailer and Tewksbury firefighters teamed with State Police to get the woman freed, according to the Boston.com report. She was taken by ambulance to the Leahy Clinic in Burlington with what were described as "serious" injuries. The scene was finally cleared and traffic …
