The MIAA released its postseason brackets on Thursday, and Tewksbury High School snagged the No. 16 seed.
The Tewksbury High School girls lacrosse season will go on for at least one more game. Following a 5-10 regular season, the Redmen earned a spot in the North Division 2 postseason, snagging the No. 16 seed in the tournament. On Thursday, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association announced its postseason pairings, and Tewksbury learned that it will face off with Winchester in a first round match up. The game, which is set for Tuesday at 4 p.m., provides the locals with a chance to pull a major upset. Winchester enters the playoffs at 16-3-1, good for the top seed in the bracket. Softball team loses a heartbreaker to Concord-Carlisle.
Softball Concord-Carlisle 2, Tewksbury 1 In a battle between top softball teams, one swing of the bat can often make the difference. Such was the case in Concord-Carlisle's 2-1 win over Tewksbury. The Redmen held a 1-0 lead entering the fifth inning, with Shannon McLaughlin locked in a duel with CC's Galen Kerr. But the Patriots turned the tables in the fifth on a two-run triple by Angela DeBruzzi. The Redmen managed five hits against Kerr but couldn't get the tying run. Tiffanie Marsh scored Tewksbury's lone run. Girls Tennis Central Catholic 4, Tewksbury 1 Kylie Sedgwick, playing her first match as No. 1 singles, scored the lone victory for the Redmen. Chotkowski tosses two-hitter to lead baseball team past Dracut.
Tennis The best season in Tewksbury High tennis history just got a little bit better when the Redmen qualified for the State Tournament with a 3-2 win over Methuen on Friday. In addition to the State Tournament berth, the win also guarantees Tewksbury High a winning record, possibly for the first time in school history. Baseball John Chotkowski turned in another brilliant effort, tossing a complete game, two-hitter to lead the Tewksbury High baseball team to a 3-2 win over Dracut High. Chotkowski struck out nine, on his way to improving his personal record to 5-1 on the year. Tewksbury is 6-10 overall. Peters sets single-game scoring record and girls lacrosse rallies to top Haverhill.
Softball _The Tewksbury High _softball team improved to 12-4 on the season with an efficient 3-0 win over Lowell Catholic on Thursday. Tiffanie Marsh continued to improve in the circle, as Shannon McLaughlin continues to recover from a broken hand. Marsh tossed a nifty one-hitter, striking out two and walking two. The Redmen found themselves locked in scoreless tie before scoring a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to put the game away. Baseball team can't dig itself out of early hole against Lawrence.
Softball Tewksbury 7, Chelmsford 3 Tiffanie Marsh went the distance in the circle and battery mate Lauren Teixeira had three hits and two RBI to lead the Tewksbury High softball team to a huge 7-3 win over Chelmsford on Monday. With the win, the Redmen sweep their season series with the Lions. Marsh, continuing to fill in admirably for the injured Shannon McLaughlin, scattered six hits and two walks, while allowing just two earnd runs. Sheri Liggiero (double, triple, RBI, two runs), Katie Doherty (RBI) and Missy Cordwell (double) had two hits each for Tewksbury, which improved to 9-3 on the season. Chelmsford dropped to 10-4. Lacrosse teams swept by powerful Chelmsford squads.
The Tewksbury High baseball team was able to slug with Peabody for a short time but wound up dropping a tough 9-7 decision on Tuesday. The Redmen started strong with two runs in the first and three in the second to take an early 5-2 lead. But Peabody rallied with five runs in the bottom of the second against Tewksbury starter Zach DiRocco to take the lead for good. Catcher Cam Oliveira continued his hot start, with three hits and two RBI to pace the Redmen offense. Mike Casey and Frank McLaughlin added two hits each in the loss. Tewksbury is now 1-1. Boys lacrosse clipped by Groton-Dunstable, 5-4.
The Tewksbury High lacrosse teams continued their strong start to the 2012 season by rolling over Dracut this week. The girls' team crushed the Middies, 20-10, while the boys earned an 8-6 win. For the girls, Melissa Peters was unstoppable. Peters had seven goals and added a pair of assists for the Redmen. Sophomores Chelsea Smith and Taylor Lirakis added four goals each for Tewksbury, which improved to 1-1 on the season. Abby Donohue chipped in with three goals. Riley Ryan earned the win in net with five saves. For the boys, Brandon Hibner netted four goals and added an assist to pace the Redmen attack. Girls lacrosse falls in season-opener.
The Tewksbury High boys' lacrosse team has split its first two games of the 2012 season, topping Bedford, 9-5, while falling to Haverhill, 8-2. Zach Jacobs netted three goals and added a pair of assists in the win over Bedford. Evan Conway also scored three goals, while Sean Foley chipped in with two goals and two assists to pace the Redmen offense. Johnny Aylward, Brendan Hibner and Joe Dirusso also notched points in the win. In the loss to Haverhill, Tewksbury was never able to get their offense untracked. The Redmen fell behind 3-0 after the first half and were never able to make a serious run. U11 Boys Tewksbury - 2 (13) vs. Dracut (12) The Tewksbury BU11-2 played an away game vs Dracut. Tewksbury came away with a 13 – 12 sudden death overtime win. Trailing by 4 goals at half time and by only 3 at the end of the 3rd quarter, the defense stepped up along with great goal tending by Nicholas Brooks to hold Dracut to only 3 second half scores. The offense cranked it up in the second half by scoring 7 goals in regulation and the game winner in OT. The outstanding defense was led by Stephen Duquette, Sean Sears, Riley Auth and Brendan Flynn. Tewksbury Boys U11-2 Patriot Youth Lacrosse League Tournament (Recap) The Tewksbury BU11-2 team played in the mid season Patriot Youth Lacrosse League Tournament, here in Tewksbury on Saturday. The kids played 4 games with much improvement each and every game. In the first game against Littleton-4, the boys came out strong but fell to a very big and talented Littleton team.
