Tewksbury Native Receives Home Makeover From High School Classmates

Tewksbury High School alumni secretly organized and planned a surprise for a classmate undergoing surgery for Breast Cancer.

When Diana Nelson Caputo came home from having a double mastectomy, the last thing she expected was to see her bedroom redone with a new king-sized bed, bedding, curtains and newly painted walls. "They (15-20 friends and family) also steamed cleaned all the rugs, stocked the refrigerator with food and even took my dogs to the groomer," she said. A Tewksbury High alum (Class of 1984), Caputo who now lives in Salem, NH discovered she had breast cancer in November. A single mom of Joshua, 15 and Joseph, 19, she has lived with her boyfriend Jeremy Goodhue for the past 7 years. Her mother Janet Nelson who now lives in Danville, NH has been a breast cancer survivor for the past twelve and one half years. Their bed frame broke three years ago …

If there is ANYONE I know that can beat this disease, it's Diana. She just oozes a zeal for life. I noticed this 24 years ago when I met and befriended her. And yes, we both suffered through a FEW of the above mentioned hangovers back then. Much love to you, Diana. Keep fighting! Lori Garinger Moody   more ›

Hadden Family Will Give Hair Today For A Cure Tomorrow

Father, son and nephew will have their heads shaved as part of the Kids Cancer Buzz-Off.

Local resident Jack Hadden admits that it’s been a long time since his last haircut. As a matter of fact, Hadden will be saving a lot of money as he passes by the barbershop this spring. On June 3, Hadden, his three-year-old son Finn and eight-year-old nephew, Damien, will all be shaving their heads as part of the Kids Cancer Buzz–off benefiting Children’s Hospital Boston.  As the Kids Cancer Buzz-off website explains, “Funds raised will support vital programs and services at Children's Hospital Boston that are helping kids beat cancer. These include patient and family support programs, arts and crafts therapy, free parking passes and meal vouchers.” Amazingly, Hadden’s involvement in the Buzz-off was simply a matter of being in the right …

Volunteering is a Family Affair for the Frisellas

Leading her family to volunteer

For 11-year-old Tewksbury resident Giovanna Frisella, or "Gigi," as her family and friends call her, her dedication to compassion and generosity has turned into what is sure to be a lifetime of commitment. “She was always asking if we could volunteer somewhere," Gigi’s father, Sal, explained. "When I asked her if she wanted to help a pastor friend who was feeding the homeless in Lynn she was thrilled.” Of course, talking about volunteering and actually doing it are two very different things and Gigi did have some concerns before her first trip to Lynn. “I was a little nervous since I didn’t know what it was going to be like,” Gigi remembered. “I was afraid that it was going to be sad and I was going to have to cry.” It didn’t take Gigi …

Three Eagles Scouts in Salvo Family

A handful of cub scouts will go on to achieve Eagle Scout. The Salvo family can boast that all three boys have reached that goal.

Boy Scout Troop 41 recently honored their 54th Eagle Scout. What makes this extra special for one family is that three of them are brothers. The Salvo family's youngest son Christopher, 18, became the third Eagle Scout following his brothers Charles (Chuckie), 28, and Eric, 23. Christopher, a senior at Shawsheen Tech, said he was proud of his accomplishment. "It has taught me leadership and confidence," he said. According to their only sister Jodi, 27, Chuckie was a role model for both his younger brothers, and the whole family played a part. Their dad, Joseph, became an assistant cub master who drove the boys to meetings, helped them with merit badges and went on hikes and camp-outs with them. She said her dad still remains active in cub …

They Say 'She Can't,' But She Says 'Why Not?'

Gina Utegg has battled traumatic brain injury, PTSD and breast cancer. Next up is the Pan Mass Challenge.

(UPDATE: Gina Utegg has been chosen as The Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day for Tuesday, Feb. 21. You can read about past honorees here.) For Tewksbury’s Gina Utegg, life has been filled with challenges. A mom in her mid-40s, Utegg has already faced traumatic brain injury (T.B.I.), post traumatic stress disorder and breast cancer.  What Utegg has never done, however, is give up.  An inspiration to countless numbers of people fighting both TBI as well as cancer, Utegg has spent the past 11 years of her life reinventing herself and proving that no one can tell her that “she can’t!” In 2001, Utegg was involved in an automobile accident with an alleged drunk driver. The accident left her with traumatic brain injury as well as post-…

Service To Mark 40th Anniversary Of Deadly Explosion

Blast felt 15 miles away, crippled Tewksbury Fire Department.

Richard Hamm was just a boy when, on Feb. 9, 1972, a massive explosion at the Lowell Gas Co. plant on Chapman Road literally sent shockwaves through the town of Tewksbury. The blast, which could be felt 15 miles away, rocked Hamm's family home, which was located just a quarter-mile from the plant, knocking items off shelves and off the walls. "My mother thought it was my brother and me (horsing) around," said Hamm, now a veteran member of the Tewksbury Fire Department. The explosion injured nearly two dozen Tewksbury Firefighters, several seriously. Firefighter William McAllister died from his injuries a week later. Capt. Frederick Millett also sustained injuries that night, injuries that contributed to a fatal heart attack 11 months later…

Teens Use "Sweet 16" Party To Help Others

Tewksbury High sophomore Taylor Lirakis and Shawsheen Tech sophomore Alyssa Post eschew gifts, raise funds and awareness for two important causes.

Traditionally, a "Sweet 16" party is a chance for a young girl to bask in the spotlight and for friends and family to recognize her passage into young adulthood. By choosing to use the occasion to take the spotlight off of themselves and shine it on others, Taylor Lirakis and Alyssa Post showed they have already achieved a high level of maturity. On Nov. 18, the longtime friends held a combined Sweet 16 party at Kitty's in North Reading. The date fell halfway between the girls' actual birthdays. "We've always kind of done stuff together," said Taylor, a Tewksbury High sophomore, who will turn 16 on Dec. 27. "We've been best friends since fourth grade. We're inseparable," added Alyssa, a Shawsheen Tech sophomore, who turned 16 on Oct. 8. …

Workin' It For a Cause

TMHS DECA holds annual fashion show to raise money for the Meghan McCarthy Research Fund.

Did you ever wish you could go to Mercedes Benz fashion week? Thursday night was a chance to have a little bit on NYC right at Tewksbury Memorial High. Instead of underfed model, atendees were treated to the lovely ladies of TMHS guiding them through casual wear, athletic, business and prom. All of these girls (and a few guys) were strutting their stuff down the stage/runway so someone who wouldn’t normally have a future can have a chance. The show was put together with great care by Lauren Donovan and Hayley Malone, (check out the pictures, in addition to putting on a great show they looked great!) and the TMHS DECA Club to benefit the Meghan McCarthy Research Fund. To participate in the show, students had to raise a minimum of $75 and …
