Wrestling team performs well at Sons of Italy Tournament.
Girls Ice Hockey Tewksbury/Methuen 8, Boston Latin 0 The cooperative Tewksbury High/Methuen High girls ice hockey team debuted over and the weekend and things could not have gone any better. The Red Rangers blasted Boston Latin, 8-0. Kelly Golini and Amanda Conway provided Tewksbury/Methuen with all the firepower they would need with three goals each. Golini, just a 7th grader, added two assists. Hayley McCarthy and Kathleen LeFebvre chipped in two assists each. Junior goalie Taylor Lirakis recorded the shutout. The Ram girls soccer, boys soccer and volleyball teams all qualified for the MIAA state tournament and the state’s vocational tournaments while the football team once again won its league and advanced to the state semifinals. It was a spring like no other this year for the sports teams at Shawsheen Valley Technical High School. Of the six Ram squads, all six finished with records well above .500, four won Commonwealth Athletic Conference championships and two also played for their respective state vocational championships. “This may be the best spring of all time,” said Shawsheen Athletic Director Al Costabile. “It is certainly the best one since I have been the AD. Tennis team trimmed by Pentucket, while the baseball team is slammed by North Andover.
The best season in the history of the Tewksbury High tennis program came to an end on Monday but not without the Redmen putting up a fight. Pentucket Regional advanced in the Division 2 North tournament with a 3-2 win over Tewksbury, in a match that had to be moved indoors to the Woburn Racquet Club because of the poor weather. Tewksbury swept both doubles contests. At No. 1 doubles, Lindsey McQuesten and Jordyn LeBlanc played very well and won 6-1, 2-6, 10-8 (match tie break). The duo finished an outstanding season at 13-5, and were named to the MVC All Conference Team. UPDATE: After this article was originally published, the MIAA made a change to the Division 2 North Softball pairings. Arlington Catholic became the No. 12 seed and Tewksbury dropped to No. 13. As a result, Tewksbury will take on No. 4 Danvers on Thursday, May 31 at 4 p.m. The Change is now reflected in the story.) Tewksbury High's Class of 2012 has a busy week. Many will be at the Prom tonight (May 29) and Graduation is Friday Night (June 1) at the Tsongas Center. But in between, the MIAA has made sure to keep the senior athletes busy. Boys lacrosse picks up key victory over Methuen.
The Tewksbury High girls lacrosse team played, what amounted to, a home-and-home series with Methuen High this week. The Redmen came away with one of their strongest games of the season, followed by one of their more disappointing. On Monday, Tewksbury put together a complete effort and rolled to a 14-5 road win over the Rangers. Scoring machine Melissa Peters added four more goals to her tally, giving her more than 100 for her career. Taylor Lirakis and Ashley Kelley backed up Peters efforts with two goals each. Riley Ryan picked up the victory in net with eight saves. The teams met again on Tuesday in Tewksbury but the result was far different. The Tewksbury High girls tennis team traveled to Newburyport on Thursday and came away with a 4-1 victory. With the win, the Redmen improved to 8-4 on the season. In singles, April McDermott lost a hard fought battle between two evenly matched players, 7-5, 6-2. Alyssa Mulno won in straight sets in a well played match, 7-5, 6-2. Kylie Sedgwick played one of her strongest matches of the season, winning 6-4, 6-3. In doubles Lindsey McQuesten and Jordyn LeBlanc played a strong match and won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Natasha Kuegler and Nicole McColgan won a very closely contested match 7-6 (0) 7-6 (2).

Quigley wins three events to lead 94-50 rout.
You get the sense that the Tewksbury High girls track team may be peaking at just the right time. Kelly Quigley won three events and Matilda Matovu won two more to lead the Redmen to a 94-50 rout of MVC rival Methuen on Wednesday. Quigley won the triple jump (32-8), 100 hurdles (16.6) and 400 hurdles (68.7). Matovu won the shot put (31-9.75) and the discus (80-2.75). "Matilda Matovu really gave us a lift today. She took both throws and had her best performance of the season. Chetkowski helps baseball team pick up huge win against Dracut, 2-0.
Girls Tennis The Tewksbury High girls tennis team, on track to post the record in team history, hit a bump in the road with back-to-back losses against Notre Dame Academy and Central Catholic. However, the Redmen showed some resiliency, with a big win over Lowell Catholic to improve to 7-4 overall on the season, 3-4 in the MVC.
