Best May Be Yet to Come for Tewksbury-Methuen Girls Hockey

After a surprising run to the Division 2 semifinals in their first varsity season, the team graduates zero seniors.

The Tewksbury-Methuen girls hockey team surprised just about everyone on the high school scene with this year’s run to the Division 2 semifinal round – even themselves. In the team’s first every varsity season, the locals came out of the gates with a 2-0-2 mark to beging the regular season. It was at that point that head coach Kim Bruff said her players realized just what could be to come. “At the beginning of the season we didn’t know what we’d have. We wanted to be a competitive team, but being a first year program we had a lot to catch up on,” said Bruff. “I think initially the girls were like ‘Whoa. I thought we were going to get slaughtered.’ So when that happened, they gained a little confidence that they knew they could compete here…

Redmen Roundup: Lirakis, Conway Lead Girls Hockey, Boys Track Wins Tough

The Redmen Roundup is a daily look at Tewksbury High sports results and highlights.

Girls Hockey Tewksbury/Methuen 4, Weston/Wayland 3 The formula to winning in high school hockey isn't especially complicated. If you have an outstanding goalie and a couple of skilled snipers on your first line and you're likely going to win more than you lose. The Tewksbury/Methuen girls have both and, as a result, they are 2-0-0 to start their first-ever season. On Wednesday night, the Red Rangers built up a 4-1 lead over Wayland/Weston after two periods and held on for a 4-3 win. Wayland/Weston carried the play much of the game, peppering T-M goalie Taylor Lirakis with more than 40 shots. But Lirakis was up to the task, keeping the visitors at bay with save after save. The offense was taken care of by Amanda Conway, who notched her …

Redmen Roundup -- Petti Sends Hockey Team Back To The State Tournament

Derek Petti's hat trick gives TMHS hockey team 3-0 win over Dracut; boys basketball team trounces Tyngsboro, 62-42; wrestlers roll over Malden.

There's not much the average high school kid can get accomplished in just nine seconds, unless of course you're _Tewksbury High sharp-shooter Derek Petti_, who pretty much punched the TMHS hockey team's ticket to the state tournament in that incredibly short span of time Wednesday night. Petti, the junior forward who now leads Tewksbury with 16 goals in just 13 games this season, broke open a 0-0 deadlock with two second-period goals just nine seconds apart, then later added a third to spark the Redmen to a 3-0 win over Dracut at the_ Breakaway Ice Center._ _The defending Division 2 state champion TMHS skaters_ had entered the game in need of just one more victory to guarantee themselves a return trip to the MIAA state tournament this …

Redmen Roundup: TMHS Wrestlers Second At Woburn Invitational

London wins 170-pound title as Redmen excel; TMHS hockey team hammers Haverhill, 5-1.

Senior captain Chris London continued his spectacular 2011-2012 wrestling campaign by capturing first place in the 170-pound weight class, sparking the Tewksbury High wrestling team to perhaps its best showing of the season Saturday. The Redmen ran up 141 total points to take second place in the 16-team field at the 2012 Woburn Invitational Tournament at Woburn High School. "It was a real good day," said TMHS coach Brian Aylward. "We had some high hopes coming in, we were shooting for top three. I thought we did a lot of positive things out there for sure. I thought we represented real well." TMHS Hockey Team Stuns Billerica, 3-2 [VIDEOS]

Chris Connors' third period game-winner extends Tewksbury's unbeaten streak to seven games.

One of these days, somebody is going to have to explain to the 2011-2012 Tewksbury High hockey team that this was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Apparently, the Redmen didn't get the memo. That became all too clear Wednesday night when the left-over remnants of last year's Division 2 state championship team waltzed into Billerica's Hallenborg Arena and stunned the highly-regarded Indians, 3-2, to raise their record to an eye-opening 6-1-1 so far this year. After starting the season with a 5-2 loss at Chelmsford, TMHS has run off a seven-game unbeaten streak, and none of the six wins in that streak was any sweeter than Wednesday's thumping of Division 1 power Billerica. "Wow, what a great night," said Tewksbury coach Derek Doherty after …
