2013 Tewksbury Municipal Election Board of Selectmen Results
A six-person race that looked to have developed into a four-man battle through the last few weeks of the campaign, turned into a two-man runaway on Election Night 2013. Incumbent Todd Johnson and challenger Jim Wentworth easily topped the field on Saturday to claim the two available seats on the Tewksbury Board of Selectmen. Johnson easily won a third tern on the board with 1,624 votes. Wentworth was second with 1,449. Rick Menard, who had campaigned heavily on public safety issues, especially keeping the South Fire Station open, was a distant third with 597. He was followed by Ken Miano (449), Mary Ellen Fernald (384) and Bob Marcin (236). Johnson said he was grateful for the chance to continue serving on the board. "I'm honored that the …

Part 1 in a three-part Q and A with the candidates for the Board of Selectmen.
(Editor's Note: This is the first in a three-part Q and A with the six candidates running for two seats on the Board of Selectmen.) Question 1: If the Town Manager is the CEO of the Town, then the Board of Selectmen is the de facto Board of Directors. What skills/knowledge do you have to sit on the board of a $100 million company? My drive, intensity and energy, with the ability to infuse that energy into a group in order to motivate and propel it forward would be one of my greatest assets. Being a take charge person and executing against plan, is a strong part of my character. I have always had the ability to bring new ideas to the table and suggest different ways of doing things. My education and background in business as well as my …

Candidate Forum Sponsored by Tewksbury Republican Town Committee
With just four weeks remaining before Election Day, the 2013 Tewksbury campaign season shifted into high gear on Saturday with a candidate forum at Town Hall. The event was sponsored by Tewksbury Republican Town Committee. Of the 19 candidates on the April 6 ballot, nine participated in Saturday's forum, including five of the six candidates running for the Board of Selectmen and two of the three running for Tewksbury School Committee. The event, which attracted around 75 voters, also featured two of the three candidates running for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate. For some of the local candidates, the forum served as a chance to introduce themselves to voters and highlight some of the issues that matter most to them. The incumbents who …

Race could feature six or more candidates vying for two seats on the Board of Selectmen.
The campaign for Board of Selectmen in 2013 could get very interesting, very quickly. Already, six candidates have taken out nomination papers for two available seats and there is still plenty of time for other candidates to throw their hats in the ring. Of course, there is no guarantee that every potential candidate will follow through by returning enough valid signatures to appear on the ballot. But with just one incumbent in the mix, it's shaping up to be a wide open race. Taking out papers this week were former Economic Development Committee member Jim Wentworth and Richard Menard. they join fellow potential challengers Robert Rosa, Mary Ellen Fernald and Ken Miano and incumbent Todd Johnson, according to Town Clerk Denise Graffeo. …

The first week of the 2013 Tewksbury Municipal Election season has started off with a bang. Four candidates have already taken out nomination papers in the race for the Board of Selectman and a fifth candidate has expressed his intentions to do so. Fernald is a former member of the Board of Health, having lost her seat on that board last year. Gay and Wilson sweep to easy victory.
In the fickle world of local politics, it's unusual for the make up of any elected board to remain unchanged for very long. Four years together is almost unheard of. But such is the case for the Tewksbury Board of Selectmen. For the third straight year, incumbents have rolled to easy victories in the municipal election, ensuring that the five-member board will remain intact. Unofficial tallies (not including absentee ballots) show that Selectman David Gay was far and away the top vote-getter with 2,600 votes. Selectman Scott Wilson was second with 2,195, followed by Ken Miano (1,572) and Bob Marcin (1,155). Remarkably, there were also 1,324 "blanks", meaning that people either voted for just one candidate or didnt't vote for anyone. Gay …

Ken Miano takes out nomination papers, joining incumbents David Gay and Scott Wilson and challenger Ed Sullivan.
It's looking like a four-man (at least) battle is brewing in the race for two seats on the Tewksbury Board of Selectmen. Ken Miano became the latest candidate to take out nomination papers, joining challenger Ed Sullivan and incumbents David Gay and Scott Wilson. Also taking out papers this week was incumbent Shawsheen Tech School Committee member Peter Downing. He is seeking re-election to a three-year term. Chris Castiglione has pulled papers for a three-year seat on the Library Board of Trustees. Incumbents Patricia Pino and Paul Fortunato are up for re-election but neither has pulled papers as yet. The School Committee race remains uncontested, as incumbent Dennis Francis and challenger Jamey Cutelis, chairman of the High School …

Committee says additional revenues will be earmarked for facility maintenance.
Despite an impassioned plea from the president of the Tewksbury Boys Basketball League, the School Committee voted unanimously Wednesday night to adopt a new Facilities Use Policy. The new policy includes a $15 per participant fee, which the committee said would go toward regular repairs and needed improvements to many of the school district's gymnasiums. "The No. 1 question we are getting is 'where is the money going?'" said committee member Dennis Francis, who served on the Facility Use Policy Sub Committee. "The business manager will be making a separate line item (in the budget) for gym maintenance and repairs." Earlier in the evening, Ken Miano president of the TBBL, gave an impassioned plea on behalf of several youth basketball …
