For the second consecutive year, the Tewksbury High football team is champion of the Merrimack Valley Small Conference. Thanks to a 34-14 beat-down on Methuen Friday night, the Redmen improved to 5-4 overall and 4-0 in the MVC Small. “No one can take that away from you,” Aylward told his team. “But go and take this next game too." After facing Dracut next week and Wilmington on Thanksgiving, Tewksbury will represent their conference in postseason play. “We get the privilege to go and represent our league, but it’s also a responsibility,” said Tewksbury head coach Brian Aylward. Aylward and his Redmen are focused on next week, and not the playoffs. “It’s not going to be a pretty couple weeks if we can’t execute and continue to get better,” …

Tewksbury High scored all of its points in the second half as the Redmen trounced Lawrence 38-20, to celebrate Homecoming at Doucette Field on Saturday afternoon. Down 6-0 at the break, Eddie Matovu returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to spark a Tewksbury squad that couldn’t get anything going in the first half. After Tom Casey’s two-point conversion, Lawrence fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Redmen took over at the Lawrence 16. Matovu finished off the drive with a five yard scamper, and Johnny Aylward ran in the two point conversion making it 16-6. “We got some huge plays right out of the gate in the second half,” said Tewksbury head coach Brian Aylward. Matovu finished the afternoon with 89 yards off only eight …

Lions clinch MVC Division 1 Championship as senior QB Colby Emanouil steals the show.
It was supposed to be a showdown between the top two running backs in the Merrimack Valley Conference. Tewksbury High's Chris Bettano against Chelmsford's Eddie Sheridan, head-to-head, toe-to-toe. But in turned out to be the Colby Emanouil show Friday night at Chelmsford's Simonian/Alumni Stadium, as the Lions' senior quarterback stole the spotlight by throwing for two touchdowns and running for another, leading Chelmsford to a 35-16 victory. The win, combined with Billerica's 42-14 loss to Central Catholic Friday night, clinches the MVC Division 1 championship for the Lions, who will now represent the league in the MIAA playoffs later this month. "The last few weeks teams have really been focusing on Eddie (Sheridan)," said Emanouil after…

QB Saunders is out; Tewksbury High football team is on a collision course with the top team in the Merrimack Valley Conference.
Tewksbury High football coach Brian Aylward would like to think that the Chelmsford High Lions might be looking forward to their Thanksgiving Day showdown with Billerica when the Redmen visit Simonian/Alumni Stadium on Friday night. The annual Thanksgiving Day clash between Chelmsford and Billerica will likely decide the Merrimack Valley Conference Division 1 championship this year. But if Aylward had any hopes of the Lions looking past his Redmen, all he has to do is remember back to last November's contest between these two teams, when Tewksbury shocked the MVC by upsetting Chelmsford, 28-7. That loss ultimately cost Chelmsford a chance to represent the MVC in the MIAA post-season playoffs in 2010. "I had a chance to talk with (…

Dracut's win over Lawrence on Friday night clinched the MVC Division 2 Championship for Tewksbury High, in spite of the loss to Haverhill.
Hold on a minute, folks. Stop the presses. Don't jump off the bandwagon just yet, because as it turns out, your 2011 Tewksbury High Redmen are the Merrimack Valley Conference Division 2 champions after all. When Dracut High beat Lawrence High, 6-2 (yes, this is football, not hockey) Friday night, the MVC Division 2 standings shook, rattled and rolled for a while. When the dust had settled, just two teams -- Dracut and Haverhill -- still had a chance to match Tewksbury's seven points in the MVC standings, and Tewksbury owns the tiebreaker advantage over both of them. If Tewksbury and Dracut tie for first, Tewksbury would go to the playoffs based on having beaten Dracut, head-to-head. And if Haverhill and Tewksbury tie for first, it doesn't …

Tewksbury High football team can clinch first post-season berth since 1996 with a win over the Hillies.
For the Tewksbury High football team, this is unfamiliar territory. Rarified air, if you will. Coach Brian Aylward's TMHS Redmen will travel to Haverhill Friday night and compete for an opportunity to participate in post-season play for the first time in 15 years. The Redmen, currently 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the Merrimack Valley Conference, sit atop the MVC Division 2 standings with their destiny seated firmly in the their own hands. In the MVC's convoluted scoring system, Tewksbury has seven points and can finish with as many as 10. Second place Lawrence has just four points, and can finish with as many as eight. Translated into English, that means that if TMHS can beat Haverhill on Friday night and earn the two points that go with it, …

Tewksbury High football team pulls out critical but nerve-wracking 26-24 overtime victory against Methuen.
With temperatures dropping and Nor'easter type conditions worsening by the minute, the Tewksbury High football team hopped on the back of senior running back Chris Bettano and pulled out an all-too-close but so very important, 26-24 overtime victory over Methuen Saturday aftenoon at Doucette Field. The Redmen, who entered the game in an unfamiliar role as the favored team, got all they could handle from the Rangers, who were (and still are) winless in the Merrimack Valley Conference this year. Bettano carried 32 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for the game-winning conversion points in overtime, as TMHS held on to first place in the MVC Division 2 title race with a gut-wrenching but critically important victory. The …
