Eileen Duff of Gloucester is the apparent winner of the Governor’s Council seat in the Fifth District. Duff, a Democrat, had 57 percent of the vote to 43 percent for Maura Ciardiello of Haverhill - with 97 percent of precincts reporting on Wednesday morning, according to reports by the Boston Globe. Both candidates are seeking the position for the first time after incumbent Mary-Ellen Manning (U-Peabody) decided against reelection to run for the state Senate. She was defeated in a four person Democratic Primary in September. She has since changed her party affiliation from Democratic to unenrolled. To the Editor: It takes a passionate woman to get people excited about something as obscure as the Governor's Council. Maura Ciardiello is such a candidate in this otherwise contentious campaign season where the public's imagination is held strongly by seemingly more important races like the congressional , state senate and the presidential races. But for Massachusetts ; the Governor's Council - a virtual political outpost- is important. Composed of eight individuals elected from districts, and the Lieutenant Governor who serves ex officio. Maura Ciardiello, Republican candidate for Governor's Council had her campaign fundraiser Thursday, October 11th at Archie's Little River Ale House. It was a successful event with over 100 supporters. Many people throughout the 5th district attended the event to show their support.
