EDC Chairman Optimistic Heading Into 2013

Economic Development Committee working with Planning Board and Community Development office to attract new businesses to Tewksbury.

By all measurements, 2012 was a good year for Tewksbury business and industry. In addition to new local businesses opening up, there was also positive movement on the corporate front with companies moving to town, such as Thermo Fisher and Cambridge Isotope Laboratories. Economic Development Committee Chairman David Plunkett says he is optimistic about the direction the town is heading entering 2013. "During this (national) economic downturn, I think that can be an opportunity to position the town where we can expand the tax base and create jobs," said Plunkett. "I think you are seeing some of those results." Community Development Director Steve Sadwick said three additional companies are either opening locations in Tewksbury or are …

I think that is great that we have 3 places expanding in addition to the two others. I also think that is great that they are all on the highway where industry should be. Wish that more than 4 employees were there but with a tax rate 1/3rd higher than Chelmsford I'm happy they didn't head up the road! I agree with BK and will work diligently as your selectman to make South Tewksbury a place where…   more ›

Merrimack Valley Pavilion Expected To Open In November

Family recreation center to feature laser tag, mini-golf, arcade and snack bar.

With each passing day, Gary Brown's vision for the property at 2087 Main St. is becoming closer to reality. Some time in November, Brown is expecting to open Merrimack Valley Pavilion, a family-friendly recreation complex featuring a multi-level laser tag arena, a miniature golf course and an arcade. The complex will also feature a snack bar. "We’re hoping to be completed (construction) in early November," said Brown. " And then with time (to acquire the) occupancy permit. Hopefully we'll be open soon after that." The property, which had once been the home to the New England Grand Prix go-cart track, had been vacant for many years. Brown bought the property from a bank in September 2011 and in February 2012 he submitted his plans for …

Sue Amato's New Restaurant Is About Family And Tradition

Angelina's Ristorante will open next month at the site of the former Black Olive.

Sue Amato's heart doesn't actually pump Marinara sauce through her veins, but it might as well. Amato has spent her whole life around Italian cooking and restaurants. Next month, all that experience will pay off, as she opens Angelina's Ristorante at 1866 Main St., in the space that once was home to The Black Olive. "Right now we're looking at the first week in September. We're very excited," said Amato, who has live in Tewksbury with her husband, Vinnie, and their children for 20 years. "We've got our staff lined up. It's a great staff, they have a lot of experience." Amato has plenty of practical experience in the art of running a restaurant. She has worked on the management and culinary sides of the business at restaurants owned by her …

Tewksbury Woman, Partners Open New Fitness Business

Wilmington, Tewksbury and Woburn residents combine to open Body Infusion by HER.

For a trio of local residents with a combined 30 years of work in the fitness industry, the next step was a logical one. It was time to open their own studio. “The three of us joined up because of the trust we have in each other,” said co-owner Emily King, who teamed up with Rose Ryan of Tewksbury and Woburn native Heather Lowe to open up Body Infusion by HER over the weekend. “We are hard working, dedicated, and we have a lot of heart and passion for what we do.” Wilmington’s newest gym is located at 296 Shawsheen Ave. in the plaza that includes Greg’s Roast Beef. King, who was raised in Wilmington and still lives in town, said the location was perfect because it is close for all three of the organizers, and also provides an opportunity …

Where Is Tewksbury's Newest Dunkin' Donuts?

The 9th Tewksbury franchise opened this week.

The item on the agenda at the Dec. 20 Board of Selectmen's meeting caught a few folks off guard. A new Dunkin' Donuts? Really? Yes. A common victualler license was granted to a franchisee opening a Dunkin' Dunkin' Donuts, complete with drive-thru window, at the Petroil gas station/mini-mart at 1992 Main St. It's the 9th Dunkin' Donuts location in Tewksbury, a town of less than 30,000 people. If the address sounds sort of familiar, it should. There is an _existing Dunkin' Donuts about 200 yards away at 1973 Main St._ Of course, these two are not the Dunkin' Donuts locations closest to each other in Tewksbury. That honor would go to the _locations at 1699 Shawsheen St_. and _1700 Shawsheen St._ -- right across the street from each other. The…

New Owners Breathe New Life Into The Trading Post

Consignment shop offers this, that ... and the other thing.

It might be easy to dismiss a consignment store as a potential location for holiday gift shopping. That would be a mistake. Many consignment shops have new, or barely used merchandise, including some items in the original packaging. They also tend to have unusual, collectible items that you won't see elsewhere. Tewksbury has such a _shop in The Trading Post_. Located at 725 Main St., right _next to Wicked Cheesy,_ The Trading Post has a little of this and a little of that ... and a few other things too. The store is also under new ownership, with Amanda LeFebre and Randy Blanchette having taken over on Nov. 1. The New Hampshire natives say The Trading Post was a perfect fit for them. "I've always been a big shopaholic," said LeFebre. "I'm …

New Restaurant Granted Liquor License, Opening Date Unclear

John Ryan's Pub will open in the former Piccadilly Pub building on Main Street.

Off the top, Bob Ryan wanted to clear up one misconception about his new business venture. "I've heard some people say that an Irish pub was opening at the old Piccadilly Pub. No," said Ryan. "A pub will be opened at the old Piccadilly Pub that will be opened by an Irishman." Ryan appeared before the Tewksbury Board of Selectmen Tuesday night at Town Hall, asking for a liquor license for a restaurant to be known as John Ryan's Pub. The restaurant, said Ryan, will be named after his 24-year-old son. Ryan, a Lowell resident, has more than three decades in the restaurant business and is currently the senior manager of the Ninety-Nine Restaurant in Lowell. He said he has also worked for Nine-Nine's in Andover and Tewksbury and was first with …

New Children's Resale Shop Opens in Town

There is a new children's resale shop in Tewksbury, and according to its owner, the store is the "talk of the town."

Christy Endicott is an admitted shopaholic. As a Tewksbury mom of two girls, she knows firsthand how expensive it is to buy clothes. She would love nothing more than to pass on great deals to others. So she opened Sweet Pea Children's Resale, 1445 Main St., in June. A server and bartender for 18 years, she has always shopped in consignment stores for her 3 and 7 year old daughters, Olivia and Alexandra.  On entering the 450 square foot store, customers will find it "organized and clean, similar to a boutique in Marblehead, but with the lowest prices around," said Endicott. She said wanted to create an upscale look, without the expensive price tag. Her stock includes many noted brand names. New items include handmade Royal Princess Doll …

Is Cafe Sicilia Coming or Going?

Sign at 1300 Main St. draws interest.

Question: Did you see the sign for a Cafe Sicilia on Main Street..almost across from Preferred Distributors? Is it opening? Closed? Let me know thanks. Maryann Fezzuoglio-Frisella This was a great question and a great spot by Maryann. We took a swing by 1300 Main St. today and dropped in. Cafe Sicilia is, in fact, a new little Sicilian restaurant geting ready to open in the coming weeks. It's owned by the same folks that own Logan Masonry & Restoration. No opening date has been set, but as soon as it is, you'll read about it here in TewksburyPatch. Thanks for the question Maryann. For having her question used, Maryann will receive a Dunkin Donuts gift card and her name will be entered in our monthly drawing for a restaurant gift card.
