To The Editor: On Friday, Dec. 28, five cars loaded up and headed down to Sandy Hook Elementary. We had with us 17 people, 300+ backpacks, and LOTS of teacher supplies. Our backpacks were donated from all over Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. The volunteers at the Sandy Hook Healing Project were prepared for our arrival and could not have been more appreciative… They genuinely were so excited about our delivery. After unloading we visited the memorial sight in the tiny downtown area of Sandy Hook – within walking distance to the entrance of the school. This idyllic New England town has been flipped upside down. All along the sidewalk, stacked 2+ feet deep and high were thousands of teddy bears, angels, candles, signs, cards, …

An Tewksbury resident is spearheading an effort to deliver backpacks filled to school supplies to the displaced students of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Suzanne Countie, an office manager with Merrimack Family Practice, said the goal is to gather 650 backpacks, each filled with school supplies. "These kids had to leave all of their school stuff behind," said Countie. The school has remained an active crime scene since 26 people, including 20 children, were killed by a gunman last week. Civilians have not been allowed back inside. Countie said she is asking Tewksbury residents to donate backpacks and, if possible, fill them with elementary supplies. She plans to lead a caravan of vehicles, driven by family and friends, to …

For parents, it's difficult to explain to children what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School. But what helps is focusing on the heroes who emerged that day.
As I sat down to ponder my Life in The Mom Lane article this week there simply didn’t seem to be any real decision as to what subject to choose. Yes, I would have loved to write an article that would spread some holiday cheer but there is no bigger issue on the minds of moms right now than the tragic events that took place last Friday morning in Newtown, Conn. I admit that, when I woke up Friday morning, my mind was pretty much consumed with holiday stress. Frankly, that morning nothing seemed more monstrous than the task of getting everything ready for the Christmas holiday. That feeling, however, didn’t last very long. I was in line at a local store when the first indications of what had happened began pouring in. My phone buzzed and I …

Help Patch build a huge virtual card to the Newtown, CT community and let them know they are in your heart and on your mind.
“There is a saying in Tibetan, 'Tragedy should be utilized as a source of strength.' No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful experience is, if we lose our hope, that's our real disaster.” – The Dalai Lama When unthinkable tragedy strikes, we grapple for a way to come to terms with the how and the why. We search for ways to make sense of what happened, even when it doesn't make sense. The horrific shooting that took place at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, CT on Friday, Dec. 14, stunned a nation as the news broke that not one child, but 20, six- and seven-year-old children and six of their teachers had been shot and killed by a gunman who then took his own life. Most communities can only begin to imagine sorrow …

Suzanne, I have a backpack that I prepared for your drive, but missed the deadline. Do you have any idea about whether they could still use one? I could take it myself, if you think so.   more ›
