When You Need to Paint the House (Sponsored)

Everything you need to know about painting your house: stripping, powerwashing, fixing damaged wood and choosing paint colors. Sponsored by Home Depot.

It’s that time of year again and you’re outside, enjoying your yard. Then you start nosing around—maybe you’re inspecting your plants, or reviewing the condition of your lawn or setting up your sprinklers—and before you know it, reality hits. You need to paint the house.   A daunting task. An expensive task. A necessary task—because it's not just about how your house looks, it's about your home's value. Neglect is not an option. Take heart, however. Information and resources have never been more easily available to help you through this project. Know Your Options Your options are to either hire a contractor or paint it yourself. Hiring a contractor is an expensive option, but if it's in your budget and you do the necessary research to …

Patch readers offer their favorite slow cooker recipes.

Winter is the time for warm, hearty meals—and what better way to prepare them than by using your slow cooker? Simmer these fall-ingredient (think pumpkins, apples and squash) slow cooker recipes in your pot, and you’ll stay warm through the winter. Submitted by Melinda Bartlett-Blante I just made coca cola pot roast. it was yummy and simple. all you need to do is put in the meat.3 pounds or so. add 1/2 a packet Lipton onion soup mix. add a can of Coca Cola Classic then add the rest of the onion soup mix. cook on High for 4 hours turning about 1/2 way through. we actually cooked on low for the day instead and it came out great   Submitted by Douglas O'Roak In the morning, add a pound of stew beef (already cut in cubes at the supermarket), a…

Stuffed Celery - A Holiday Appetizer to Please Your Family

This tasty finger food is quick for you to prepare and is a big hit at parties. Make it for your next party.

"I'm afraid of losing my obscurity. Genuineness only thrives in the dark. Like celery." -- Aldous Huxley I was asked to make an appetizer (of my choice) for a Christmas party last weekend. I decided to do something different (for me) and make a cold app, rather than my usual hot one. I planned on making a cheese and cracker platter, but after an overwhelming couple of hours in the grocery store, I ended up with way more than I had planned. I left with a mixture of tasty items-olives, marinated mushrooms, tomatoes, celery and pepperocinis, along with different cheeses and cracker selections. When it came down to it I couldn't fit everything on the platter and left the cheese and crackers aside (for my husband to consume during the week, I …

Chicken Cacciatore Comfort Food, Italian Style

Chicken and vegetables simmer together to create this wonderfully satisfying dish .

"You don't want to make a steady diet of just lettuce. You don't want to make a steady diet of fried chicken." -- Paula Deen Chicken Cacciatore is one of those dishes that is just perfect for a slow cooker. Chicken and vegetables stewing together all day-the smell is heavenly and the taste is spectacular. So when I saw that the supermarket had chicken thighs on sale I just knew I had to make it. I dug out my old recipe, purchased my ingredients and pulled the slow cooker from the pantry. Then I ran late every morning, all week long. Rats! I did end up making the Chicken Cacciatore for dinner one night by modifying the recipe, but hopefully next time I'm going to make it I will get out of bed when the alarm goes off. The first time. Here …

Lazy Sunday Morning Quiche

Here is a recipe for a veggie quiche, great to make ahead of time and bake on a relaxing Sunday morning.

"Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." -- Lewis Carroll There is nothing like a lazy Sunday. Unfortunately because of our hectic lives we don't get to enjoy them as often as we'd like. Between sports, events, errands, etc. it seems as though there is never a day of rest during the week anymore. At this point I'll take what I can get...so how about a lazy Sunday morning? Just a few hours to sleep in, read the paper, take the dog for a leisurely stroll...then eat a nice breakfast with my cup of Joe. This quiche is perfect for that morning, because you can premake it a day or two ahead of time and just throw it in the oven when you're ready. The recipe makes two so you can even freeze one for later. …

French Onion Soup - Slow Cooker Style

French Onion Soup is delicious and easy when you make it in the slow cooker.

“You will find this to be a more oniony soup than the usual kind but, as the cross old lady said when a stranger told her that her slip was showing, "I like it that way.” - Margaret Yardley Potter I think of French Onion Soup as the Rocky Balboa of soups. It is an enduring favorite, it has bite and it may be basic, but it definitely has depth. You can envision it going a few rounds with Apollo Creed's Beef Stew. But seriously, French Onion Soup is that perennial favorite that we love to order in restaurants as an appetizer but seldom actually try to make at home. In all the years that I have been cooking the first time I tried to make it was last weekend, when I decided to try my hand at a slow cooker version. I have just one thing to say…
