Selectmen's Notebook: Tax Deliquents To Be Called In For Hearings

Rail Trail proponents look for support taking next step.

The owners of three Tewksbury businesses, delinquent in their property taxes, will be called to appear before the Board of Selectmen next month. At their meeting on Tuesday, selectmen voted to schedule public hearings on license renewals for Mavericks Restaurant and Lounge, 2212 Main St., Lowell Transportation, 911 East St. and Oscar's Pinata, 346 Main St. for the board's meeting on Feb. 12. Over the last few years, selectmen have grown impatient with businesses that have been delinquent in their property taxes or water and sewer bills. This year, the board made the decision to hold off on renewing required licenses for such businesses if taxes were not up to date or payment arrangements made by Jan. 1. Cambridge continues to levy the lowest residential taxes, with a 2013 rate of $8.66 (Cambridge also adopts a residential exemption). The average residential tax rate for those communities surveyed was $13.09 in 2012 and has risen to $13.58 for this coming year. Boston's commercial …

Karen and Bob, you claim that I am misinformed in my post. Though neither of you countered with what I am misinformed about. Bob went over that the warehouse should have never been there in the first place and Karyn posted a violation of Article 47. The thread of the posting is the 2013 tax increase. People asked why we have increased taxes and I am merely making the point that some on the …   more ›

How Does Tewksbury's New Senior Citizen Tax Abatement Work?

Senior Citizens will be eligible for a big savings on their property tax bill.

Question: How does the new Senior Volunteer Tax Abatement work and how much money can we save? Answer: At the recent Annual Town Meeting, Tewksbury voters approved $25,000 for the establishment a fund that will allow senior citizens to save several hundred dollars a year on their property tax bill. To participate in the program, a Tewksbury Senior Citizen would need volunteer time working for the town. According to Town Manager Richard Montuori, volunteer opportunities will be available in every town department, including the schools. Seniors will have the chance to choose the job they want on as first come, first served basis. "We’ll send something out the departments and get a list of their needs, job descriptions," said Montuori. "…
