Killing of Woburn Police Officer Jack Maguire helped gain support for Melissa's Bill, which limits parole eligibility for convicted violent repeat offenders.
With the fate of Melissa's Bill solely in Gov. Deval Patrick's hands Tuesday, the governor made a decision at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon. "I will sign this bill," he said. Melissa's Bill, named for Melissa Gosule who was killed by a violent repeat offender who was out on parole, has been in the works for years. But it was the killing of Woburn Police Officer Jack Maguire on Dec. 26, 2010 that spurred more support for the bill. Officer Maguire responded to an armed robbery at Kohl's in the middle of a blizzard. When he stopped the suspect, a paroled repeat offender with several convictions for robbery and violence against police officers, gunfire was exchanged. Officer Maguire was killed, as was the suspect. Chuck Maguire, Officer Maguire's …

The following information was supplied by the Tewksbury Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.
A Beech Street resident who said his mailbox had been vandalized three times previously, was spurred to action when he witnessed it happen for a fourth time early Wednesday morning. Alen Haley said he was standing on his porch at 251 Beech St., smoking a cigarette when a car drove past his house and the front seat passenger slammed his mailbox with a baseball bat. "It's ridiculous," he said. "This is the fourth time it's happened. And I had a pretty good idea of who it was involved because he had posted something about smashing mailboxes on his Facebook page." Furious, Haley went to his car and followed the suspect's vehicle. While driving, he called Tewksbury Police and gave a description of the car and its plate number. As officers were …

The fine is proposed for items including a failure to effectively communicate with customers and officials and to respond during emergency events. National Grid strongly disagrees with the conclusions drawn by the AG.
Today, the state Attorney General's Office announced it is seeking fines against the utility National Grid. The utility, meanwhile, strongly disagrees with the conclusions drawn by the AG and will file a response with the Department of Public Utilities. After an investigation by her office determined that utility giant National Grid failed to adequately prepare, respond, and communicate during Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm, Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office is seeking a $16 million fine against the company – the largest penalty ever recommended against a utility in Massachusetts. The AG’s Office made the recommendation in a brief filed Wednesday with the Department of Public Utilities (DPU), which has the …

A reader wants to know if what happened in Wilmington and Stoughton could happen in Tewksbury.
Question: There have been stories in recent days about unexploded fireworks being found in fields several days after Fourth of July fireworks displays in Wilmington and Stoughton and other towns. Are we sure there aren't any unexploded fireworks down on Livingston Street? After all, kids play down there. Answer: The short answer to this question is no, there are not. But the longer answer is, the Tewksbury Fire Department has policies in place to make sure there are not -- ever. According to Fire Chief Mike Hazel, the day after every fireworks display, a representative from the fireworks company (in this case, Atlas Fireworks) does a walk through of the shooting site with a command officer from the Fire Department. "It's a condition of the…

(Editor's note: The following information was provided by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.) A special study conducted by CPSC staff found that 65 percent of all fireworks injuries in 2011 were sustained during the 30 days surrounding the Independence Day holiday. More than half of these injuries were the result of unexpected ignition of the device or consumers not using fireworks as intended. Fireworks injuries most often resulted in burns to the hands and head, including the eyes, face, and ears. According to the special study, sparklers, firecrackers, and aerial devices were associated with the most incidents. Whether it is the sparkle of the bright lights, or the thunderous boom of the explosion, there is no denying the thrill …

Quick response by Tewksbury Fire Department limits damage.
A home at 45 Judith E Drive was damaged Thursday afternoon after being struck by lightning. According to a Tewksbury Fire Department official, the lightning clipped the edge of the home and sparked a fire in the eaves on the backside of the building, which spread into the attic. Homeowner Robert McLaughlin was home at the time of the lightning strike, around 4:15 p.m. He went outside and noticed a small amount of smoke coming from the eaves and called the Fire Department, according to firefighters on the scene. Quick response kept the fire from spreading to the living areas of the home, but there was significant damage to the attic and a small hole in the roof. No injuries were reported.
