We've got video coverage from Wilmington, where the Tewksbury football team earned a Thanksgiving Day victory over their rivals.
It wasn't perfect, but it was still a win. Tewksbury rolled over rival Wilmington on Thursday in their final tuneup before the postseason begins against Reading. See what both coaches had to say, and see some of the sights and sounds from another Thanksgiving Day rivalry game.
Tewksbury dominated rival Wilmington and went on to an 18-6 Turkey Bowl win.
Before they headed to their Thanksgiving Day dinners, the Tewksbury footbal team chowed down on a heaping plate of Wildcat. The Redmen dominated their annual Turkey Bowl tilt against Wilmington, earning an 18-6 victory on Thursday. Eddie Matovu got the ball rolling when he cracked the scoreboard on a five-yard dash with 6:19 to play in the first quarter. With four seconds left in the first half, quarterback Johnny Aylward opened the game up a bit more with a 40-yard dash on a drive that began with a fumble recovery by captain Christian Taylor. Then with 3:51 to go in the third quarter, James Sullivan put the game out of reach when he bruised ahead for a one-yard score, giving his team an 18-0 lead.

Tewksbury High scored all of its points in the second half as the Redmen trounced Lawrence 38-20, to celebrate Homecoming at Doucette Field on Saturday afternoon. Down 6-0 at the break, Eddie Matovu returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to spark a Tewksbury squad that couldn’t get anything going in the first half. After Tom Casey’s two-point conversion, Lawrence fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Redmen took over at the Lawrence 16. Matovu finished off the drive with a five yard scamper, and Johnny Aylward ran in the two point conversion making it 16-6. “We got some huge plays right out of the gate in the second half,” said Tewksbury head coach Brian Aylward. Matovu finished the afternoon with 89 yards off only eight …

Tewksbury High had a chance to knock off an unbeaten team for the second week in a row, but fell short in a slugfest at Doucette Field, 51-42 to Andover. “I think that this is one that will go down as one of the all-time games,” said Redmen head coach Brian Aylward. From the opening kickoff to the final gun, both teams “spilled their guts,” as Aylward said. They combined for 93 points and enough highlight reel plays to keep the healthy crowd in suspense until the finish. After beating a 3-0 Lowell squad last week, 21-0, Aylward had his squad ready to go against another powerhouse offense. “Last week was a tremendous win, one for the ages,” Aylward said. “It doesn’t matter what happens today, or 20 years from now, that’s something that no …

A look at what Wilmington is saying in advance of Thursday's big game.
For a game that means nothing to the Wilmington High School football team, Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game means everything. Continuing a tradition that dates back about 80 years, the Wildcats will battle bitter rival Tewksbury in the team’s final contest of the season. Wilmington enters the game at 6-3 overall, 4-1 in Middlesex League small school play. “It’s the playoffs, it’s the Super Bowl, it’s wining that Turkey Day trophy and getting to show it off in the case. That’s basically our Super Bowl trophy,” said senior quarterback Matt Ferreira. “It’s definitely a lot better day if we win the game.” Tewksbury is heading in the opposite direction as its border rival. The Redmen are postseason bound and looking to extend their season with …

Redmen enter a critical stretch looking for a little payback against 2-3 Middies.
On paper, Saturday afternoon's Merrimack Valley Conference match-up between Dracut and Tewksbury has the potential to become another monumental win for the Redmen. This game features two teams heading in opposite directions, as the once and mighty Middies have lost three straight games by convincing margins, while TMHS has played three of the most successful teams in the MVC over the past three weeks, and come out on top in two of those games. Tewksbury is coming off an impressive showing in a 20-14 loss to powerful Billerica High School last Friday night, and to be fair, if not for a handful of costly turnovers and ill-timed penalties, the 2011 edition of the TMHS Redmen could be carrying a 4-1 record into this game. But even at 2-3 …

Penalties and turnovers are costly as Tewksbury High football team throws a scare into Billerica.
The toughest pill for the Tewksbury High Redmen to swallow when they look back on Friday night's 20-14 loss to Billerica will be the fact that this was a game they very much could have won. A slew of penalties, a couple of dropped passes and three turnovers derailed what should have been a good enough effort to give Tewksbury its third straight Merrimack Valley Conference upset victory. "It's pretty frustrating," said TMHS head coach Brian Aylward afterward. "We're not good enough to come in here and not execute and we're certainly not good enough to come in here and hand over anything in terms of penalties and turnovers and that kind of stuff like we did tonight." Two interceptions, a fumbled punt and 67 yards in untimely penalties gave …

Former Tewksbury High football standout Tom Bradley still holds 11 school records.
A lot of water has flowed under the University Avenue bridge since the days when Tewksbury's Tom Bradley ran wild on the University of Lowell football fields. For openers, the school is now known as the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, and it doesn't even have a football program any more. And if it did, the football team would be known as the River Hawks, not the Chieftains, as they were in Bradley's day. In spite of all the changes, Bradley's record-setting career at ULowell, and the highly successful era he played in, will not be forgotten. Bradley will be among five people inducted into the UMass-Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame when it honors its Class of 2011 on September 30th at the UML Inn and Conference Center in downtown Lowell…
