TBBL, Wamesit Warriors preparing for re-unification.
UPDATED at 10:30 a.m. Politics can make strange bedfellow. In this case, so can youth sports. Potential election rivals have set aside differences for the time being and helped to broker a deal that will re-unify two Tewksbury-based travel basketball programs. The Lowell Sun reported this week that The Tewksbury Boys Basketball League and the Wamesit Warriors are set to re-unify and form one travel league program. According to the report, representatives from the programs, including TBBL President Ken Miano and members of his board of directors and a Wamesit contingent, including Dean Graffeo and Scott Wilson got together last week to nail down the final details of reunification. Tewksbury (Warriors) vs. Revere The 8th grade ‘A’ Wamesit Warriors from Tewksbury lost a high-scoring contest to Revere, by a final of 81-63. Turnovers on offense were the difference. Despite picking up a fourth foul to start the second half, limiting his minutes, Justin Derrah scored 32 points, to go along with double-figure rebounds. Ryan Briggs hot shooting, including three 3-point baskets, and 16 total points, helped keep things close, but it wasn’t enough. Tewksbury (Warriors) vs. Saugus The 8th grade ‘A’ Wamesit Warriors from Tewksbury were not able to overcome a 32-16 foul discrepancy, having three players foul out, and a fourth player almost experiencing the same fate, in a close 55-48 loss to the Sachems from Saugus. Nick Dunlap scored 13 points, Ryan Briggs 15, and Justin Derrah a team-leading 16, with all three players knocking down 3-point bombs. Tewksbury (Warriors) vs. Melrose The 8th grade ‘A’ Wamesit Warriors from Tewksbury beat Melrose, by a score of 66-53. Eight players got in the scoring column. Nick Dunlap scored 6 points, Andrew White 4 points, Devan Bere 4 points, Connor McLean 3 points, Jack Theriault 2 points, and Ryan Bain 3 points. High scorers were the back/frontcourt tandem of Ryan Briggs with 15 and Justin Derrah leading with 29 points. The Warriors led at halftime by ten, and maintained a lead from start to finish. 8th Graders Fall just short against unbeaten Salem.

WW 37, Masconomet 23 The young Warriors came out of the Christmas break and picked up just where they left off. The back half of a home and away series in Masco and coming away with a convincing 37 -23 victory. Superb passing in the half court game as well as on the fast break were the keys to having all 11 players in the scoring column. Jack Kelly & Colby Wilson led the way with 6 pts each. Jay Connolly with 5 pts and David Miller and Colby Brown with 4 pts each. Warriors 8th Grade A 49, Leominster 47 The 8th grade ‘A’ Wamesit Warriors from Tewksbury beat Leominster in an exciting and close contest, by a score of 49-47, ending with Justin Derrah taking the ball the length of the court on an inbounds pass and converting a shot with 3 seconds remaining to break the tie. Eight different Warrior players scored, led by Derrah’s 24 points and 15 rebounds. Andrew White was a force in the first half with two baskets, and made it difficult inside the paint for the Leominster front court. The 6th Grade Wamesit Warriors have started their 2011-12 campaign with an eye on getting back to the Championship. After five games it is clear that there is a lot of work to do. The Warriors are 3-2 and have had some fun games. In their opening victory (43-26) Tyler Wilson paced the team with 12 points, while Kyle Harkins had 8, Patrick Carleton 6 & Blake Hiltz had 5. The 8th grade ‘A’ Wamesit Warriors from Tewksbury won their second consecutive game, with a convincing 52-23 victory over Hamilton-Wenham. Every player scored, and the bench played big minutes, helping to balance the scoring and make solid contributions to the team win. The 8th grade ‘A’ Wamesit Warriors from Tewksbury split a pair of games over the weekend beating Danvers by a score of 55-20, and losing a hard-fought game to Saugus 56-44, after leading at the half. The Warriors went to the bench early and often in both games, and got big contributions. Leading scorers for the games were Justin Derrah with 28 points to go along with 23 rebounds, Ryan Briggs with 17 points and great leadership from the point guard position, Ryan Bain with 17 points, including four 3-pointers helping open up the inside, and Devan Bere with 16 points, including four 3-point baskets.
