Area police chiefs say that the arrest of a local drug kingpin and the seizure of more than 100 pounds of cocaine will put a serious dent in local drug trafficking, at least for the time being. Jose Martinez, 51, of Andover, is being held on $5 million cash bail after allegedly being arrested with cocaine in his car that carried a street value of more than $2 million. State and federal law enforcement officials had been investigating Martinez for three months and say he was distributing the drug to dealers throughout the Merrimack Valley. A drug task force collaborated with multiple levels of law enforcement in the successful seizure of roughly 48 kilos of cocaine in Andover on Friday.
A regional drug task force snatched 48 kilos (over 100 pounds) of cocaine, with a street value of more than $2 million, Friday afternoon and took it off the streets for good. The Essex County Drug Task Force seized the cocaine from a motor vehicle and arrested the driver, an Andover resident, in connection with the large drug supply. The arrested and seizure was the result of a three-month long investigation into the alleged drug trafficker charged in the incident. On Friday, April 5, at approximately 1 p.m., police stopped Andover resident Jose Martinez, 51, of 123 Chestnut St., on Interstate 495 northbound. Police have made two more arrests in their continuing efforts to curb drug trafficking in Tewksbury. According to information provided by Police Chief Timothy Sheehan, officers arrested Eric McDermott, 28, of 19 Jefferson Road, Tewksbury and Brandon Grue, of 78 Liberty St., Danvers, after observing an alleged drug transaction on March 1 in the parking lot of the Mobil On The Run, 1785 Andover St. Grue is charged with trafficking cocaine over 18 grams, distribution of cocaine and conspiracy. McDermott is being charged with possession of cocaine and conspiracy. The men were arraigned in Lowell District Court. Possession of cocaine and oxycontin among the charges.
Ongoing surveillance operations conducted by Tewksbury Police detectives netted another drug arrest last week. Two women and a man were arrested on Friday (Dec. 28) after they were observed allegedly conducting a drug deal in the parking lot of the Home Depot, 85 Main St. According to Police Chief Timothy Sheehan, detectives observed a Honda Civic, occupied by two women later identified as Bianca Figueredo and Angelica Aviles, and a Mercury Sable operated by a man, later identified as Dana Fecteau. According to the detectives' report, they observed Figuerodo leave the Civic and get into the Sable and then saw her conduct a hand-to-hand transaction with Fecteau. Two alleged dealers face charges; Oxycodone, crack, heroin seized.
The Tewksbury Police Department continued to wage a determined war on local drug trafficking with two more arrests on Wednesday. Benjamin Torres-Ramos, 30, of 247 Salem St, 3rd Floor, Lawrence, was arrested and charged with possession with the intent to distribute a class B substance (crack and cocaine) subsequent offense, and possession with the intent to distribute a class A substance (heroin). The arrest came after Tewksbury Police Detectives stopped Torres-Ramos' vehicle around 3 p.m. for a motor vehicle violation on South Street. Tewksbury Police Officers investigation a break-in involving a tractor -trailer wound up arresting two individuals on drug charges at the Motel 6. Samuel Velez, 42, of 815 Dright St., Holyoke and Nicole Gonzalez, 25, 12 Twombley Ave., Billerica, were arrested late Monday night in Room 121 at the motel. The suspects were arraigned Tuesday in Lowell District Court. Both are charged with possession of a Class A substance with intent to distribute, possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute and being present where heroin was being kept. A Lowell woman is facing drug charges after Tewksbury Police officers allegedly witnessed her selling cocaine in the Woburn Street area. According to information provided by Police Chief Timothy Sheehan, Ana Ramirez, 55, 183 Moody St., Lowell, was arrested Tuesday night, Sept. 20. Tewksbury Police Officers, with help from officers from Lowell and Billerica, set up a drug surveillance operation in the area of Woburn Street and Lowell Street. According to Sheehan, the department had received numerous complaints from residents drug activity in that area.
