He's fiery on the sidelines. And it provides the spark the Tewksbury High School girls basketball team needs. Redmen top Notre Dame Academy, 47-37 to clinch second place and qualify for the state tournament.
Warming the hearts of procrastinators and late bloomers everywhere, the Tewksbury High girls basketball team punched its ticket to the state tournament for the second straight year with a 47-37 victory over Notre Dame Academy of Tyngsboro Tuesday night. Sophomore center Chelsee Porcaro scored 12 points and junior forward Nicole Chaet added 11 as TMHS once again overcame a frustrating start to the season and roared back to qualify for MIAA Division 2 tournament play. Tuesday's game was a microcosm of the entire 2011-2012 schedule as the Redmen started out sluggish and shot the ball poorly in the first half, only to come to life in the latter stages of the game and pull away for the win. "A win is a win. I think we sort of played to their …

Redmen bounce back from Monday's loss with a 38-29 road win.
It wasn't pretty, but it was effective. Playing on a hostile court for the second time in two nights, the Tewksbury High girls basketball team got a game-high 16 points from junior guard Nicole Chaet and 10 points from sophomore guard Sara Semenza, and took a 38-29 victory over Haverhill High Tuesday night, in the process keeping the team's Merrimack Valley Conference Division 2 title hopes alive. "I was worried about this game," said TMHS coach Mark Bradley. "We had a tough, long day against Bedford yesterday and I was worried that our legs might have been a little bit gassed. This has been a very tough place for us to play in, for years. It wasn't the prettiest thing, but for us to get out of here with a win, I feel good about that." …

TMHS girls blow out Dracut, 54-34; Petti nets two as hockey team ties Boston Latin; track teams show well at Freshman-Sophomore meet.
If you want to get an idea of how dramatically the Tewksbury High girls basketball team has improved over the last six weeks, just roll your calendar back to December 16th, when the Redmen, mired in an 0-6 start, lost a turnover-plagued, 48-40 decision to Dracut High on their own home court. On Friday night, that very same group of TMHS girls stormed into Dracut's house and slapped the unsuspecting Middies around in their own gym, taking a 54-34 victory. It was Tewksbury's fifth win in its last seven games. "We're playing way better, overall, as a team," head coach Mark Bradley said after Friday night's game. "The confidence is just getting better and better and better and that's nice to see. It was a total team effort tonight. It was a …

Smith, Liggiero, Semenza play big roles as Redmen put together their biggest win of the season.
If Tewksbury High girls basketball coach Mark Bradley could just find a way to have his team start its season a month late each year, there's no telling how successful his Redmen would be. Just like last year, the TMHS girls have shrugged off a disastrous 0-6 start and come on strong as January turns into February, winning four of their last six games. Tuesday night brought the biggest victory of the year for the Redmen, as freshman Shannon Smith hit a clutch free throw with 13 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime, and Tewksbury pulled out a 52-45 upset win over heavily-favored Chelmsford. "This is our best win of the season by far, hands down," Bradley said. "We faced adversity by missing a key player. We faced a deficit and…

TMHS girls get first win of the season; TMHS boys win back-to-back games for the first time in years.
This winning thing is starting to get a little contagious. Just four days after the Tewksbury High boys basketball team ended a three-year home losing streak with a convincing win over Chelmsford, the Tewksbury High girls basketball team responded by picking up their first win of the 2011-2012 season, topping Notre Dame Academy, 47-19 Tuesday night. Not to be outdone, the TMHS boys went up to Haverhill and earned their fourth win of the season, knocking off the Hillies, 63-56, on Tuesday. For the boys, it was the first time in at least three years that Tewksbury High has won back-to-back games. GIRLS GET FIRST WIN Junior forward Nicole Chaet led all scorers with a season-high 19 points as the hard-working Redmen pressed Notre Dame all …

TMHS boys basketball team drops Dracut, 63-59; Girls lose to Dracut 48-40.
It wasn't Phil Conners' first time in the winner's circle, _so forgive the Tewksbury High's new boys basketball coach_ if he wasn't jumping up and down and giving out high fives after his TMHS Redmen traveled to Dracut and came home with a 63-59 win Friday night. "It feels good, but it's only one win," said Conners, who coached Lowell High to a 12-7 record two years ago before coming to Tewksbury. "And winning programs don't celebrate single victories. It's a start, but I'm not excited. It's what I expected us to do if we worked hard in practice." Senior guards Bobby Lombard and Mike Doucette scored 18 points each to lead the Redmen to their first win of the year and Conners' first win as Tewksbury's head coach. The Redmen overcame a four-…

TMHS girls basketball team drops a 48-29 decision to Central Catholic on Opening Night.
It could have been worse. Much worse. Last year, when Tewksbury and Central Catholic met in early December, the Red Raiders rolled to a 42-point victory. That 71-29 loss sent Tewksbury into an early-season tailspin. On Monday night, Tewksbury High could again muster only 29 points against the Red Raiders, but this time the Redmen held Central to a more respectable 48 points, and walked away with their heads held high. "We worked hard," said TMHS coach Mark Bradley. "Based on what I saw I think we've got a lot of things to look forward to, and I think we have to clean up a lot of things offensively. But our zone defense we worked on slowed them down. I'm happy with the way the girls worked." Tewksbury seemed to have a case of the opening …

Still young, but no longer inexperienced, the Redmen return three starters in 2011.
With very little height but lots and lots of speed, the Tewksbury High girls basketball team figures to rely on an up-tempo style of play this winter. Junior forward Nicole Chaet, the team's leading scorer in 2010, leads a trio of returning starters who will be called upon to run and gun and keep things moving this winter if the team is going to be competitive in the rough and tumble Merrimack Valley Conference in 2011-2012. Chaet is the team's captain. Also returning are two sophomores who started as freshman last year, point guard Sara Semenza and center Chelsee Porcaro. Senior guard Sheri Liggiero and senior forward Katie Doherty also return with plenty of experience under their belts. In terms of height, however, the Redmen will be one…
