Columnist George Will Tackles The Motel Caswell Saga

Battle between Tewksbury motel and the Department of Justice is grabbing national attention.

The ongoing battle between the U.S. Department of Justice and the owners of the Motel Caswell has now grabbed national attention. No less than Pulitzer Prize winning syndicated columnist George Will has tackled the debate in his latest column for the Washington Post, describing the situation faced by Russ and Pat Caswell as a " a Kafkaesque nightmare unfolding in Orwellian language." The conservative Will blasts the Department of Justice for attempting to seize the Caswells' property for the misdeed of motel guests, when the Caswells themselves have not been accused of any crimes. Click here for Will's complete column on the Motel Caswell.

Oh look its that respectable establishment which I use lightly and sarcastically, in the news again. Saturday, August 4 12:09 a.m.: A 911 caller from the office at Caswell Motel stated there was a male beating up a female outside one of the rooms on the property. All cars were sent and one was transported to Saints with an officer on board.   more ›

Tewksbury Police Follow The Money In Search For Burglar

The following information was supplied by the Tewksbury Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

When investigating "white collar" crime, law enforcement agents often say they need to "follow the money." Apparently, the same holds true for some burglaries. Tewksbury Police are investigating a break-in at Main Street Liquors that took place early Wednesday morning (May 3). A call came in from Central Alarm at 2:59 a.m. reporting a general burglar alarm from the store, located at 391 Main St. Three officers were sent to the scene and the first to arrive saw that the front door of the store had been smashed in. A K9 unit was immediately called in. One of the officers investigating then noticed a money trail leading from the store, through the parking lot of the Ninety-Nine Restaurant and over to Main Street in the direction of the Motel …

UPDATED: Caswells Lose Round 1, Forfeiture Case Heading To Trial

Federal judge denies motion by Motel Caswell lawyers to dismiss the case.

Round 1 has gone to the Federal Government in their property forfeiture case against the Motel Caswell. But lawyers representing the motel and its owner, Russ Caswell, say the fight is a long way from over. According to a press release issued last week by The Institute for Justice, U.S. Magistrate Judge Judith G. Dein, denied a motion by Caswell that the government's case be dismissed on procedural and Constitutional grounds. As a result, the case will move forward to trial in U.S. District Court, some time later this year. "Obviously, I'm very disappointed. We would have liked to have this whole thing taken care of," said Russ Caswell. "But it may be a blessing in disguise. It will give us more of a chance to get our side of things out …

Marie, you sound like you may be new in town, or at least naively uninformed about the decades-old goings on at The Caswell. There is an immense history here of things that would make your hair stand on-end and non-compliance. Do a little backfround research and it will make a bit more sense to you.   more ›

Connolly, 29, 298 Pine St., Apt. 22B, Manchester, and Nathanial Davis, 38, 75 West Hancock St., Manchester, were taken into custody after several Tewksbury Police officers responded to Home Depot just before 6 p.m. Thursday (April 12) for a report of two shoplifters who had fled the store. UPDATED Poll Of The Week: Should The DOJ Seize The Motel Caswell?

Does the government have the right to seize the property of a person not accused of a crime?

(Editor's note: The technical error has been fixed and voting is open for this poll.) The Department of Justice is trying to seize the Motel Caswell, owned by Russ Caswell, claiming he was aware of criminal activity on the property and took no action. What do you think?

My personal thought is that Motel 6 and the other area hotels which have by far more crime are too big of a challenge for the police dept and DOJ. I will say what I have been saying all along, besides the authorities who plan on scoring extra cash on this miscarriage of justice. There is back room deals going somewhere, someone in town wants this property. it was better when the Sullivans were …   more ›

5 Things You Need To Know Today: Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011

Bits of knowledge to help make you the smartest person in your carpool.

Here are 5 pieces of information to help start your Tuesday with a smile and make you the smartest person at the school bus stop. 1. Today's Local Weather Forecast: According to the NWS, today will be partly sunny, with a high near 66. West wind between 3 and 9 mph. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 48. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm. 2. Wishful Thinking: It turns out that your friendly, neighborhood editor was jumping the gun and engaging in some wishful thinking when he concluded that Stop & Shop was going to locate in the Rite Aid Plaza because they were appearing before the Planning Board last night for a special sign permit. Truth is, Stop & Shop owns that entire plaza but has no plans of moving in (still odd to me). …

I had no idea the Rite Aid Plaza was owned by S&S. Why on earth don't they open their store there or at least do something about the look of it (more than a sign). They have plenty of money to do so.   more ›

Caswell To Feds: I Won't Let You Take My Motel

Motel Caswell owner feels Department of Justice is over-stepping its authority in trying to seize the property.

For two years, Russ Caswell has been back on his heels, defending himself against allegations by the Department of Justice that, for years, he knowingly allowed drug trafficking to go on at the Motel Caswell. Now he’s fighting back. Backed by new lawyers, who have launched an aggressive public relations campaign, Caswell is denying any wrongdoing and claiming that the government is stepping well beyond its authority in trying to take his motel under Federal Civil Forfeiture Laws. “I may sell (the motel) eventually, but the government doesn’t have the right to take it,” said Caswell. “It’s not right.” In September 2009, the Department of Justice filed a claim in U.S. District Court, seeking to seize the Motel Caswell and the land it sits on…

Hi A-Townie, thanks for the reply. Is any of that illegal? Can't you say the same thing about the local fast food joints? Surely all these unsavory people have to eat. I don't think the local mcdonalds should have to drug customers or investigate where their money comes from....yet that's what Mr Caswell would have to do to satisfy you. You make it sound like they were running a brothel...but if …   more ›
