New TMHS Athletic Field Construction To Continue As Planned

Field, located adjacent to new high school, is expected to be completed by July 1.

Despite the failure to land a Parkland Grant, construction of the new Tewksbury high School athletic field will go on as scheduled. The only difference is, the field will be natural grass. Back in October, Tewksbury voters had approved spending $750,000 to install artificial turf on the new field. However, the vote was contingent upon the town landing a Parkland Grant, worth as much as $400,000, to help pay for it. Town officials recently learned they had been bypassed for the grant. Supporters of the artificial turf proposal say they were encouraged by the feedback they received and will re-apply in 2013. However, Phase 2 of the new Tewksbury High construction project called for the parking lot and the field to completed by next summer, …

PHOTOS: More Than 5,000 Turn Out To See New Tewksbury High School

Feedback on $66 million complex overwhelmingly positive.

Tewksbury School Department officials estimate more than 5,000 residents showed up on Saturday for a chance to tour the new Tewksbury Memorial High School. "We had run off 3,000 maps and I said, 'this isn't going to be enough,'" said Principal Brenda Theriault Regan, who said she wasn't surprised at all by the huge turnout. "People had said, 'oh, you're so optimistic.' But I said, 'I guarantee we're going to have to run off more.'" Visitors included students in the school system, alumni, parents, grandparents and many people who had no children in the schools at all but wanted to see what $66 million can buy. "People in this town couldn't wait to see their investment and I think they're very happy," said Regan. As they entered the school, …

FOTCAC Will Ask Taxpayers For $1.7M For High School Athletic Complex

Group wants town to borrow money for scaled down version of Tewksbury High playing field project.

Time is running out in the fourth quarter and the Friends Of Tewksbury Community Athletic Complex (FOTCAC) are in a two-minute drill in their year-long quest to provide the new Tewksbury High School with a state-of-the-art athletic complex in time for the 2013 fall season. FOTCAC last summer announced plans to raise $2.2 million to help the town upgrade its construction plans for the new high school complex to include a multi-purpose synthetic turf playing field surrounded by an eight lane running track, complete with expanded viewing stands, lights, a scoreboard and a press box. But eight months of fund-raising has netted the group just $14,600 in ready cash, and the committee has decided to go hat-in-hand to the voters and ask Tewksbury’…

Abutters Voice Concerns About Proposed Tewksbury High Athletics Complex

Increased traffic, noise and lighting issues are among area residents' concerns.

Approximately two dozen residents from the neighborhoods surrounding Tewksbury High School turned out at Town Hall Thursday night to voice concerns over the proposed enhancements to the athletic facilities slated to be built as part of the new Tewksbury High School construction project. The current construction plans call for a natural grass athletic field with no lights and seating for 500 spectators to be built. But the recently created Friends of Tewksbury Community Athletics Complex (FTCAC) has sought approval from the board of selectmen and the school committee to raise private funds which would be used to enhance the proposed athletic complex. FTCAC's plan calls for a lighted, artificial turf field to be installed, with stadium …

Privately-Funded Athletic Facility Gets School Committee Approval

Friends of Tewksbury Athletic Complex pitches lighted, synthetic turf stadium.

When Tewksbury resident Paul Hibner took a closer look at the plans for the new Tewksbury High School building project last winter, he was, like many others, disappointed in the bare bones athletic fields that had been included in the project. "People were very surprised when they saw what we were actually getting," Hibner said. "There were visions early on in some of the presentations on the school that led one to believe that it was a much different sports complex than the one we ended up with." So Hibner and and a handful of other Tewksbury residents including school board member Brian Dick, formed the Friends of Tewksbury High Athletic Complex. The organization's initial goal was to study the feasibility of upgrading the athletic …

Group Proposes 1,600-seat, Artificial Turf Stadium for New High School

FTCAC says present field plan insuffient for athletic needs.

A group made up of parents, school district staff and members of the School Committee is proposing construction of a 1,600-seat, multi-use athletic complex as part of the new high school construction project. As part of the new $66 million high school, there are already plans for a new football field with seating for 500 and a natural grass surface surrounded by a six-lane synthetic track. However, members of Friends of the Tewksbury Community Athletic Complex say the plans are simply insufficient for the needs of the Athletic programs of the school and the community as a whole. "Currently, there is no lighting, no scoreboard, no goals, no nets and no press box," said Paul Hibner, who serves on the board of the FTCAC and acted as …
