Reader Photo of the Day: Why Did the Pig Cross The Road?

Did you see this pig roaming around the area of Whipple Road on Tuesday?

The above picture was submitted by reader Colleen Cadger, who captured this pig roaming around the area of Whipple Road in Tewksbury.  The pig was roaming around loose, according to Cadger, backing up traffic. Deputy Chief John Voto said the Tewksbury Police Department received call reporting an "enormous pig" loose in the area of Whipple Road at around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.  It remains unclear where the pig got loose from.  Do you have an interesting photo from around town? Email it christopher.gambon@patch.com and it could be featured as a Photo of the Day.

POTD: Tewksbury Turkeys Safe For Another Year

Our photo of the day was taken by the office of local dentist Steven Demetriau, DMD.

Things were a little dicey in the days leading up to Thanksgiving for a flock of Tewksbury turkeys. But on Friday morning, safe and sound for another year, the turkeys emerged from their undisclosed location and made their presence known at the Cottage Place plaza. This photo was posted by staff from the office of Dr. Steven C. Demetriou, DMD with the following caption: "Cottage Place resident turkeys greeted Dr. Steve this morning feeling confident they made it through another Thanksgiving! Hope everyone had a wonderful day!" If you have a photo you'd like to be considered for Photo of the Day, you can email it to tewksbury@patch.com or text it to 978-413-8265.

POTD: Girls Make a Difference By Cleaning Up Neighborhood

Four Tewksbury girls stepped up last month and took action to beautify their neighborhood.

When Ashley Figucia told her father last month she needed to do a project that would help the environment, he suggest a neighborhood trash cleanup. Ashley recruited her sisters, Rachel and Julie, and her friend Janina Kennedy, and the quartet patroled three streets in their neighborhood. In all, they collected three bags filled with trash and made their small part of Tewksbury more attractive. This photo of the four young environmentalists was submitted by Paul Figucia.

Male turkeys commonly become aggressive in the spring during mating season. They will chase and attack you. I know multiple people who have been attacked by turkeys. People should be cautious and recall that these are WILD birds, no matter how tame they may seem at times.   more ›

POTD: Sears First To Make State Ballot

(Editor's Note: The attached photo was submitted by Doug Sears.) When it comes to earning a place on the fall ballot, someone always has to be first. In this case, it was Tewksbury Selectman Doug Sears. Sears, a Republican, is mounting a challenge to state Rep. Jim Miceli, D-Wilmington, in the 19th Middlesex District in the fall. Recently, Sears filed his nomination papers with the Secretary of State's Office and was told that he was the first candidate in the state to qualify for the ballot. In addition to his own campaign, Sears has also been campaigning in Tewksbury for U.S. Sen. Scott Brown.

Scott Brown will be marching in the Tewksbury Veterans Day Parade. He graciously has consented to be with us again this year. Scott will be in Haverhill and in Peabody before spending the afternoon with us. When I spoke with him at the opening of his Chelmsford office, he was enthusiastic about coming to Tewksbury again where he has always felt welcome. He had to clear it with his schedulers.
