Clock Strikes Midnight For Red Rangers In Loss to Duxbury

Two-time defending state champs are too much for Tewksbury/Methuen in State Semifinals.

The Tewksbury/Methuen girls’ hockey team travelled a long way, both literally and figuratively, to play in the Division 2 State Semifinals on Saturday in Bourne. Unfortunately for the Red Rangers, their game against two-time defending State Champ Duxbury High may have seemed even longer. Combining a relentless attack with a smothering defense, the Dragons overwhelmed the Red Rangers, 8-0, to advance to the State Final on March 17 at the TD Garden. Duxbury (20-1-1), which held a 48-11 edge in shots on goal, settled matters early with four goals in the first period against Tewksbury/Methuen goalie Taylor Lirakis (40 saves). They added two in each of the final two periods. Jacqui Nolan and Liz Collins had two goals each to pace the Dragons’ …

Red Rangers' Cinderella Ride Continues With 7-3 Win Over Canton

TMHS girls hockey team advances to Division 2 North quarterfinals.

The first year Tewksbury/Methuen Red Rangers girls varsity hockey advanced to the MIAA division 2 quarterfinals, upsetting second-seeded Canton 7-3. The offense was led by three goals and three assists from Amanda Conway. Kelly Golini and Hayley McCarthy, added a goal and an assist each, as the Red Rangers kept the Canton defense and goalies befuddled all game. On the back-end, stud defensemen Hayley Sutherland and Kathleen Lefebre (30+ minutes each) wore down the potent Canton attack, limiting the Bulldogs to feeble outside shots. When needed, shutdown goaltender Taylor Lirakis (30 saves) stifled the Canton attack with timely saves, frustrating the heavily favored home team. Kelly Blackwell and Lefebre with also scored, while Sutherland …

Redmen Roundup: Girls Hockey Stays Unbeaten, Blanks Belmont, 3-0

Conway continues scoring rampage with fourth hat trick.

The best kept secret in girls' high school hockey may well be the Tewksbury/Methuen Red Rangers. The Red Rangers remained unbeaten on the season (3-0-2) with a 3-0 whitewash of Belmont High on Wednesday. Taylor Lirakis continued to be a brick wall between the pipes for Tewksbury/Methuen, finishing with 35 saves to post another shutout. The offense, as it has much of the early season, came off the stick of Amanda Conway, who posted her fourth hat trick. Through five games, Conway has a jaw-dropping 13 goals and one assist. Kelly Golini added two assists and Kathleen LeFebvre had one assist in the win over Belmont. Despite being unbeaten, Tewksbury/Methuen has yet to crack the Boston Globe Top 20. The Red Rangers will face their stiffest …

Tewksbury High and Methuen High To Form Co-Op Girls Hockey Team

Team will be the latest addition to the MVC/DCL Conference.

Tewksbury High has a new building and a new principal -- now comes a new athletic program. TMHS is making preparations for its first season of girls' ice hockey. Actually, the Redmen will be joining forces with longtime MVC rival Methuen High to form a co-op team to compete in the MVC/DCL conference. Methuen is just starting a program too, so they are in the same boat we are," said TMHS Athletic Director Brian Hickey. "We're excited. We've been good partners in the MVC for years." Co-op programs have become commonplace in high school hockey, as a means of maintaining the health of a program while keeping costs down. In Methuen High, Tewksbury has a partner that owns and operates an ice arena on its own campus, which will make the program …

Lirakis Takes On The Boys Yet Again

Tewksbury High sophomore Taylor Lirakis places third at the International Goaltending Competition as one of only four girls.

When Taylor Lirakis made the Tewksbury High varsity hockey squad as a sophomore this past winter, being the team’s only girl didn’t seem to faze her. But last month when she placed third at the International Goaltending Competition against boys from all across the region, Lirakis made it clear that gender differences aren’t something that stop her from succeeding on the ice. “Originally I thought I would be [going up] against just girls and then I found out I’d be competing against guys so I didn’t think I was going to do as well,” Lirakis said. “But I ended up being [one of] only [four] girls competing and I beat out several other guys so it was a really good outcome.” The IGC is a unique competition strictly for goaltenders that aims to …

Redmen Roundup: Boys Basketball Wins A Thriller, Girls Tripped By Melrose

Redmen down Shawsheen Tech, 43-42; Hockey team completes three-game sweep at Maine Invitational. London continues hot start to season.

In high school sports, the senior class is expected to step up and take charge when the game is on the line, and that's exactly what Tewksbury High senior guard Mike Doucette did last night. With his team trailing by four points and just 60 seconds left on the fourth quarter clock, Doucette took over the gym floor at Wilmington High, scoring the final five points of the game and leading TMHS to a thrilling, 43-42 victory over Shawsheen Tech in the consolation game at the Knights of Columbus Larry McGrath Basketball Tournament Wednesday night. After Shawsheen's Devin Summiel (game high 15 points) scored from in close to make it 42-38 with just over a minute to go in the game, Doucette responded by swishing a three-pointer to pull the Redmen…

This Woman's Place Is Between The Pipes

Sophomore Taylor Lirakis earns a spot on Tewksbury High's State Champion boys hockey team.

When you win a state championship, it seems like everyone wants to play for you. Even the girls. Tewksbury High sophomore Taylor Lirakis not only tried out for the TMHS boys varsity squad this winter. She made it. Lirakis, who played on Tewksbury’s junior varsity team last winter, was one of four candidates for two goaltender spots on this year’s varsity squad. The pony tail hanging down the back of the TMHS player wearing shirt number 24 is the first piece of evidence that Lirakis earned one of those spots. "I beat out two other boy goalies and it just made me feel really good about myself and that I accomplished a really big goal by making varsity,” she said. Even though she has yet to appear in a varsity game so far this season, coach …
