TMHS Goalie Taylor Lirakis Selected to All-Star Team

The junior goaltender who plays hockey year round said she's excited to represent her school during the Shriners All-Star Classic in March.

As part of a new weekly feature, Patch will be highlighting athletes on a weekly basis, looking at the efforts of players with Tewksbury ties from various sports. This week we look at Taylor Lirakis, the junior goalie for the Tewksbury girls hockey team. Lirakis was recently selected to play in the Aleppo Shriners All-Star Hockey Classic. The game is scheduled to take place in Worcester on the ice of the DCU Center. The girls game begins at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, followed by the boys game. Tickets can be purchased for $11, and admission includes a ticket to that night's Worcester Sharks game. Follow this link for more details on the game. Just Two Weeks Remain for Redmen Winter Teams

Tewksbury High teams are entering the stretch run as the regular season winds down and playoffs approach.

For Tewksbury winter sports teams, the finish line is in sight. Just two weeks remain in the regular season before teams across the state begin their postseason runs. Several Redmen teams are action this week as they wind down their own regular season slate. On Monday, the only team in action is the girls gymnastics team, which was scheduled to take on Dracut Saturday. That meet will instead take place to start the week because of the snow that hammered the area. Tuesday is a busier day for Tewksbury teams. The basketball teams are both in action with 7 p.m. tilts. The boys team hosts Billerica while the girls team travels to take on Lawrence. Action continues for the Redmen on Wednesday as well. Tewksbury's girls hockey team skates in a …

Greene, Tucker and Arcari Named Outstanding Athletes

Dozens are honored at Tewksbury High School's annual athletic awards banquet.

It's not often that you see either Leanne Tucker, Ally Greene or Anthony Arcari moving slowly. On Thursday night, however, all three of these Tewksbury High star athletes were a step behind their usual pace because their arms were full of hardware. Tucker and Greene shared the 2010-2011 Tewksbury Memorial High School Outstanding Female Athlete Award while Arcari took home the 2010-2011 Charles R. Hazel Outstanding Male Athlete Award at the school's annual athletic awards banquet held at the U.S. Bunting Club in Lowell. Arcari, Greene and Tucker were three of dozens of athletes honored on a night that also marked the final athletic banquet for long-time soccer and track coach Steve Levine, who will retire at the end of this school year. …

Jim: There were many other deserving athletes recognized at the athletic awards banquet last night and I would have loved to have mentioned them all, but there is only so much you can include in one article before you lull your reading audience to sleep. As it is, this article was probably the longest one I've written for Patch so far. Since it was a senior week banquet, I stuck primarily to the …   more ›

Teachers, Athletics Spared In Final Budget Draft

School Committee finds additional savings in transportation and math adoption bids

Call it creative financing or call it good fortune. No matter how you slice it, the bottom line is that the Tewksbury School Committee reached its final reccomendations on budget cuts for Fiscal Year 2012 Wednesday night and neither teachers nor athletic programs will fall victim to the budget cutting axe. Having already agreed upon $595,000 worth of reductions in next year's budget, School Committee members came to Wednesday's meeting prepared to make tough decisions on how to trim another $253,000 worth of programs or positions prior to next month's Town Meeting. But before the expected debate could even begin, school Business Manager Jack Quinn announced that the transportation bids for next year had come in $125,000 lower than expected…

Well said, Christian. Why is it that do or die "threats " re. teacher layoffs /athletic programs warrant more attention (as in you better vote for this or else) than closing a fire station? Doesn't seem equal to me.   more ›
