State and local dignitaries on hand for official ribbon cutting ceremony.
Amid much pomp and ceremony, the Brown Street/Whipple Road Bridge officially re-opened on Friday. The bridge had been closed since Spring 2010, when the bridge was heavily damaged by flood waters. The bridge is technically owned by Wilmington and Billerica but it has a major impact on Tewksbury residents in the Whipple road area. After much negotiation and planning by officials from the three towns and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, work on repairs to the bridge began in June. State ready to complete project several weeks ahead of schedule.
The Brown Street/Whipple Road Bridge, closed for more than two years after sustaining severe flood damage, will be open for traffic by the end of next week. Tewksbury DPW Superintendent Brian Gilbert said Friday that final work on the bridge will be completed early next week. "The bridge deck is done and the paving is done," said Gilbert. When work on the project began in April, the state was projecting a completion target date of Oct. 31. At that time, the design work was already completed and the remaining work was estimated to carry a $240,000 price tag. The state …

State Secretary of Transportation Richard Davey visited the bridge on Friday (April 13) and met with local officials from Tewksbury, Wilmington and Billerica. The meeting was arranged by state Rep. Jim Miceli, D-Wilmington, who had hoped to get a commitment from the state to build a temporary bridge to re-open the road as quickly as possible, while plans for a permanent fix were finalized. However, according to Patricia Leavenworth, District 4 director for the state DPW, said the difficult logistics would make construction of a temporary bridge on the site take virtually as long as completing the…

Rick, I used to drive through that road for at least 2 years and I saw that you could speed up really easy. I didn't know the bridge was open until today, but I read your comments and I will start using this road again going to Bedford, but I will stay under the speed limit. Glad you brought this up, If I am the only one, at least you got one with you.   more ›
